Mastectomy vs. Lumpectomy

So no matter what research you read or hear they say that the survival rates are the same for early stage Breast Cancer. Ok fine... However, I was stage 3a and I opted for a double mastectomy. How come I never hear any research about more advanced cancers in the breast. I mean for those of us sitting on the fence, what research shows what the best choice is??? Is stage 1 and 2 early? What is the classification for early stage breast cancer? The bad thing is, I went into this thinking I caught it early and finished at stage 3. Why don't we have more insight from doctors about more advanced Breast Cancers? If you are stage 3 is mastectomy a better choice. I agree catching it early is great and research shows better outcomes. I want more information and advice for my stage. Everything I read and research is based on catching it early. I was 39 and stage 3! What should be the best choices for me?

I was a stage lll at 43 !! I had a lumpectomy on my surgeons and MO suggestion . My primary was very small but I had 2 3cm tumors in my lymph nodes !! I had neoadjuvant chemo and pathology showed a complete response . I think all the "choices" is the hardest......hoping you make the right ones with no regrets. I guess I trusted my docs knew more about cancer then me :/
