Weight loss?

Orthopaedic surgeon is planning a hip replacement as pain is life debilitating. Despite this, the X-rays show little actual damage. I've read a lot about it and accept this is quite common but obviously worry that there's actually mets there. My newly qualified Doctor daughter insists I would be loosing weight if it were mets.

So my question to those unfortunate to be stage four is, did you loose weight before diagnosis?

Thanks.

Hi Alloway, in a word, nope!  No weight loss here before dx of stage IV but my mets are bone only.  I do know that weight loss can occur with liver mets and other soft tissue mets  so you DD is partially right but everybody is different and what makes one lose weight will make another gain.

Thanks so much for your reply Chrissy and I hope you're keeping well. Just got an appointment for a bone scan on the 25th after raising questions re hip/back with the Breast surgeon.

Susan, I'm so glad to hear that you are getting it checked out......that is always a good thing to do.  Good luck with the scans!

I'm doing well, living and loving life, thanks for asking.

Me neither.  Total surprise when the back fractured and lo and behold. . .

A bone scan or MRI might shed some light on the problem and alleviate your fears.  Glad you are getting checked out and I hope it all turns out OK.

Sorry I didn't see your question earlier, but I thought I'd comment now, since my experience was totally different from chrissy and pajim.  I did have unexplained weight loss -- from 117 to 104 -- as well as an unexplained illness (sort of a mix of bronchitis and pleurisy and the flu) that I couldn't shake.  The weight loss was probably over 2 to 3 mos, starting in October 2014, and at the time I chalked it off to the tremendous stress we were going through due to a horrible flood that displaced us from our home for several months and did thousands of dollars of damage, much of it not recoupable.

So I think unexplained weight loss is something to be concerned about -- but clearly not a factor that, if not present, means you can't have mets or something else serious going on.    (((Hugs)))  Deanna
