It has gotten to be such a cliché, the pink ribbons on everything from garden tools to crackers in the supermarket. Here in my beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains the fall colors will be starting soon, along with clear blue skies and wisps of smoke from fireplaces .I forget sometimes, run out to the store for something, and my sensibilities are assaulted once again by the cute, pink fuzziness of my disease. The same disease that still robs me of my peace of mind now and then, that draws me back here to make sure others are still surviving too. The disease that wakes me up in the middle of the night and finds me running my fingers over my torso, looking for something unusual. Such an odd disconnect for me with all the marketing frenzy.

Is it me, or is it getting really bizarre for us, this dichotomy?

I couldn't agree more.   I'm sure there wouldn't be tutus and sparkles if a man had to have his testicles removed.

Did I ever misread!  My first thought was about WINTER already attacking - we had our first laying snow last night.  Last early Oct , we had a nastier than,'average'  blizzard that lef t U.S.'  without power for 8 days.

I am one who does like seeing  pink in Oct.  (I HATE pink!) I do not every wear any clothes with ANY pink on them (ask anyone who knows me) except in Oct.  IF someone doesn't like itl - "too bad, so sad, get glad".  If even one person who sees 'pink' on someone in Oct thinks about getting education/knowledge for themself or loved one - thats what matters to me.  To me, it doesn't matter what unscropulus (sp?) pebbles do for money, it matters that even ONE woman (or man) may seek care, sooner better than later.

I actually like pink..not the light pink but bright pink lol. BUT, I hate BC awareness month. It irritated me before BC and now it's worse since I was actually dx'd 10/22/13...freaking october.

I actually got an ad in the mail yesterday from a car dealer ship. It was pink and had the pink ribbons....for a sale on cars. uggggggg

I'm especially pissed at the NFL and they're stupid pink stuff in lieu of the Ray Rice crap. I'm a big football fan, but the pink stuff always seemed so forced and fake. Now it's just ridiculous to think the NFL is a champion of women's causes since they are okay with domestic violence.

    bleh...i hate all of this.

Tagandchris: I TOTALLY agree w/you about the NFL.  Hippocrites.

Weesa:  YEP you got it nailed !  Why do companies jump on the pink train when we are still probably decades away from a reliable cure for even "any" stage of BC?  Even more than the ribbons and the color, I find it quite disturbing when I see t-shirts with cute little slogans like "save the ta'ta's"  !!  And there's an excellent article in AARP this month that talks about how little money out of millions is actually allotted for "research" for cancer/ cure.

Totally agree - and I've hated it for years. It fries me for SO many reasons.

October is my birthday month - and believe me, I celebrate it ALL month long. It's crunchy leaves underfoot, Hallowe'en, planting bulbs, looming skies and harvest moons. Pink is incongruous and puts me in a bad mood during my favorite time of the year!

I hate, too, the commercialism as well as the notion that women need more awareness of breast cancer. Is there honestly a woman over the age of 18 in this country who isn't aware of it???

I love October, too, and it's my birthday month as well.

I'm going to buy a jock strap and bedazzle it, and print a small sign reading, "Cure the Cojones!"  I'm going to carry these items with me throughout October, and when I encounter a decorated bra display I'm going to pin my Testicular Cancer Awareness display alongside.

I KNOW people, most of them, anyway, want to support and fund and beat the drum and find a cure.  Most of them aren't aware that the trivializing, infantilizing, sexualizing, and mass-marketing of breast cancer is offensive.

And dammit, I really do like pink.  The soft, pastel shade.  I look great in it.

Had so much fun reading these responses tonight! I know it is a topic we touch on every October, but it is great to see we haven't become complacent about the marketing exploitation of our disease.

I have got to check out sbelizabeth's blog--I love her wit, quirky imagination and writing ability.

And Kicks--I saw the news tonight about your snow. Mind boggling. Hope it is not a harbinger of a wicked winter.

Love all that  Weesa and sbelizabeth wrote....you girls are priceless!! Your wit and humor wrapped up in your ability to put them down in writing is a true gift to us all!! Thank you for the humor and insight!!

I sometimes wonder what would the effect be if all the ugly horror of this disease was on all the products, adds, t-shirts and so on. The pics of children left without moms, husbands standing alone, bald heads with sunken dark eyes, scarred chests and so much more. I know I felt deceived by all the pink once I was diagnosed " just get your mammograms and you're safe".... so very not true!! Just wonder if more of the sorrow/fear/ugly was shown than the happy pink ribbon....what would happen?  More of a cry for a cure and less awareness? Maybe if the pink was gone...the money would go too? Just something I wonder when I walk the aisles of a store and know the pics in my mind that could replace that sweet pink ribbon!

Hopefour, that's why I can't do the breast cancer events during which people carry signs, "in memory of my ____ (mother/daughter/sister/aunt/friend).  The pain is just too much.  I think about leaving my dear ones behind, grieving and sad...my husband, alone...and I want to fall to my knees and cry.  For each of these signs, there was a woman who was shocked, afraid, in pain, and died.  That is the reality of breast cancer.

If the pink was gone, would the money follow?  Good question.  My "son-the-doctor" urges me to practice good sense and moderation, with the understanding that the pink ribbon-waving does more good than harm.  He's right, I bet.

But I'll also bet that the woman at the pink-ribbon event wearing a tee shirt that says "I (heart) My Boobies!"  has "boobies" that have not been touched by breast cancer.

Nothing I can add except me too!!!  Hate the word awareness so much!!!  Really who isn't aware of breast cancer.  I was getting all cranky at the ice bucket challenges for ALS too.  My friends couldn't understand why I was so upset with it "brings awareness".  What the hell does dumping a bucket of ice over my head tell me about ALS?  Not to mention it's now starting with the commercialism...businesses asking people to come witness the challenge at their store fronts, t-shirts at the beach "I survived the ice bucket challenge".  I wish I knew what the answer was, but all I know for sure is I HATE October!!!

I agree everyone!  It's a big joke about awareness and all the commercialization and all the money being made off this horrible disease in the name of awareness...why the heck did I have mammograms since I was 30 only to be diagnosed with stage 3 bc at 43...because mammos have difficulty reading through dense breast...some awareness.  How about making women and men "aware" that mammograms suck when it comes to breast density...how about getting rid of mammograms all together and replacing with a yearly breast MRI plus an easy ultra sound...ugh my rant is almost done.  I wish I would have been "aware" that mammograms failed me all these years because of my acute breast density.  It makes me tear up to think of all my years of mammograms and self exams.  My self exam is what saved my life because 9 months prior I had my clinical yearly exam...which missed it completely.   I would have caught it earlier but it was buried under a 2.5 cm benign nodule and thick breast tissue near my chest wall.  All the pushing for women to get mammograms when the fail rate is high in dense breasts...so scary...if bc is the number one cancer killer of women, why aren't MRI's and US being used consistently...it would be cheaper for the insurance companies to go this route than paying for all the cancer treatments.  This month should be dedicated to educating people of the different kinds of breast cancer, breast density, and what types of diagnostics should be used in "early" detection...including self exams.  Mammograms did not make me anymore "aware" and neither did the color pink.

    FOCTOBER!

I had an argument with my DD about that stupid ice bucket challenge

It tuns out they did make a lot of money but they only donated a minimum toward research...

They can send a man to the moon and they can't find a cure???????

I too did the survey Mods...it would be interesting what U find out

    Focktober stinks!!!!!

    End of rant

Not much to add other than I'm with you all on this. weesa, your humor makes me smile every time.

Holy cow! I laughed out loud at that sbelizabeth: Cure the Cajones! Priceless!!

I absolutely hate the 'save the tatas' and 'I love boobies' crap.  Seeking to be provocative but just another example of chauvinism and sexualisation of a deadly disease. Disgusting.

I argued with my husband about the ice bucket challenge, too.  The options were to douse yourself with water OR donate to the ALS foundation.  Why was everyone dousing themselves with water? They should have posted videos of themselves putting a check in the mail.

    Foctober, indeed.

    Maxine

My mom died from ALS.  Began at age 44.  It is a horrible disease.   I couldn't agree more.  Money for a cure is much better than a bucket of ice water.

I don't understand the sexualization of breast ca.  I am offended by I heart Tatas. I hearted mine too until they tried to kill me

I will say both are cruel diseases.  I would like to take a pass on both diseases.

Peacestrength, what you said.  Exactly.  I, too, had mammograms faithfully starting at age 30 due to lumpy, dense breasts only to be diagnosed with stage III ILC at age 56. They don't tell anyone that mammograms suck if you have dense breasts. They also don't tell you some types of breast cancer don't even show up on mammograms and don't feel like a lump (ILC). I had a clear mammogram and manual exam by my doc 5 months before I was diagnosed.  The tumor was 5 x 8 cm. She didn't feel it.  I didn't feel it. I only got suspicious when the dense area in my left breast felt definitely different from the dense area my right breast.  We need MRIs. Well, I don't anymore because I no longer have breasts.

I hate pinktober, and I especially hate the "ta-tas" and "boobies" crap. We're talking about saving women, you know, actual PEOPLE  not "ta-tas." I also agree on the ice bucket challenge.  Just donate for crying out loud.

Well, I did it. I started my "Pinktober" soapbox early on Facebook.

Someone had posted a video of a mom dancing with her son at his wedding. She had battled MBC for so long, and hung on to be able to dance with him. She passed just three days later.

I posted the link, explaining it this way:

Dear Facebook Family and Friends: as we get closer to October (or "Breast Cancer Awareness" month - or "Pinktober" as many in the breast cancer community call it) I wanted to share this video to bring awareness not just to the issue of breast cancer or the need for mammograms. I wanted to put a face to Metastatic Breast Cancer, or Stage IV Breast Cancer. Every year, more than 40,000 women die of MBC. Sadly, this number has NOT decreased for at least 15 years, despite all the "Awareness" campaigns. The truth is, we don't need more "Awareness"... we need a CURE!
