Had breast cancer July 2007.  Been off femara now going on two years this December.  In March started having problems with lower back and neck, head shoulder and arm.  Saw a doctor she was a joke.  The head and arm part got some better but not gone.  Pain in lower back and neck area evety day.  I have arthritis which got worse on femara.  New primary care doctor ordered a total body bone scan.  Had it done today and after the scan and the radiologist checked it he must have seen something suspicious because he then ordered regular x-rays on back and neck.  Has anyone had this happen before after a bone scan?

I have not had that BUT think about it.  While all we think about is cancer...the docs are thinking about what is causing the pain.  There are MANY things other than cancer that can be causing the pain.  My guess would be that they saw a compression or some other bone related (ie. NOT cancer related) issue.  In this day and age they are going to order a further scan just to cover their you know whats!  I highly suspect it is a bone pain related or muscular related thing and has nothing at all to do with cancer.  But, I get it...I just saw a red line in my gum yesterday and thought I may have oral cancer.  Our minds are our best and worst assets at times!

Your right ppplocke.  Im sure we all think cancer with every new pain.  That will probably never go away.  Cancer has a way of doing that to a person.  I hope mine again turns out to be arthritis or something like that.  Sure wish these medical people would get on the ball with giving out results....

Hi jude14 - shortly after I was diagnosed I had a bone scan where they identified some spots on my spine which were suspicious.  The doctor then ordered an X-ray which showed that it was degeneration of the spine but not cancer.  These bone scans show up a lot of spots that may or may not be cancer. Your doctor is using the regular X-rays to check the findings of the scan.  Try not to worry too much.  It could very likely be benign, but the docs like to be careful when they are dealing with bc patients.  Fingers crossed for good results for you!

Jude, I also have a stiff neck that grinds and pops when i turn it. i am 41. i have had this neck pain for at least 6 months. i also had it in the past few years off and on especially while at work and in one position looking at a computer monitor all day. i also went in for a bone scan even though i am early stage 1a and mets to the bone would be rare for me. however, my neck lit up on the bone scan. they then sent me in for an xray which came back completely normal. the radiologists report stated "likely degenerative disease" (arthritis.) however, because i have a history of BC they can't completely rule out mets. my oncologist talked to a different radiologist about it (the previous one being on vacation) and he suggested additional MRI images. The fact that my xray came back normal was a concern because if it is arthritis it would have showed up on the xray. however, EARLY arthritis does NOT always show up on xrays but does on bone scans. anyway, i politely told my oncologist that i believe it to be arthritis and declined any further testing. it sure is easier to choose fear over faith but at some point you have to do it. BTW, how did yours turn out?
