My oncologist gave me a prescription for ativan.  I had to take for several days or so.  It really worked.

Blondiex46- I used to take my steroids by 7 pm with my dinner to help with not being able to sleep.  I told my onco about my not being able to sleep at night.  She suggested I take Benedryl at night.  Fortunately, that did the trick for me.  Make sure you ask your onco before you take any OTC meds ( ie Benedryl).  Hope you are able to get some sleep soon.

blondiex46 - Sorry the benedryl didn't work for you.  I know the inability to fall asleep is very frustrating and to stay asleep just adds to that frustration.  When I didn't fall asleep, I would get up and lounge on the couch with some mindless tv on.  I know that the light from the tv can stimulate the brain which may further interfere with sleeping.    The anxiety of not sleeping seemed to escalate my not sleeping a little more.  In my mind, I viewed the mere act of laying down and resting as a very good thing and eventually I would fall asleep. I would take a nap whenever I could.

As for the steroids, if I remember correctly, I think I had to take them twice a day..... one in the morning and one in the evening.  I would take the morning one with breakfast as early as I could so I would take the evening steroid as early in the evening as I could ( 12 hours between the doses).

If you are still struggling to get some sleep, you may want to chat with your onco.  Hope the sleep fairy finds you soon!!!

I get my steroids with my chemo. Cannot sleep that night. I take Zyrtec every night, but that doesn't help. Started taking over the counter sleeping pills. Works for a few hours.
