Tomatojuice, I'm glad to hear from you--been worried!
You're right that you have no choice in needing to continue with an antibiotic. But if this one is causing you a lot of fear, and if as you say in your other post tonight, you really don't feel comfortable with the doctor who prescribed it, do look for another opinion on it. Perhaps there are other antibiotics that would work as well. Or perhaps another voice on the subject would at least be able to put your fears to rest.
If you have a PCP you trust, see if s/he's on call this weekend. Or revisit the ER or a Critical Care facility.
I'm really hoping you'll get some help so you'll be able to rest confidently. Take it easy, stay really well hydrated--and get well quick!
Gentle hugs,
Binney -
I was in the hospital 8/15-8/21 w/ breast cellulitis and abscess. They inserted a picc line and sent me home on iv abx. I am still on the vanc twice a day and cefapime three times a day. Can't help w/ that particular med, but I do know you need to dtill be on something. If you're not comfortable w/ it, call your doc and ask if there's something else you can take or at least tell them your fears.
Hope you get better soon!
-
Another source of information and/or reassurance if you can't reach your prescriber directly might be the pharmacist. They should be able to put the risk of dangerous side effects into perspective. For instance, unless you are also diabetic, lactic acidosis may be unlikely.
Keep in mind that all adverse reactions must be listed even if the drug was not the primary cause. Especially in a younger, mostly healthy person the worst case scenario would be rare. It's good to be aware but don't worry too much. Drink lots of water to help the medication distribute through the body well, take it easy this weekend and I think you'll be fine!
-
Every single side effect that has happened to even one person has to be listed. If you were on Vancomycin, it must be due to the bacteria in your cellulitis. Vancomycin doesn't work orally, so Zyvox is the next choice. Is there a particular side effect that is worrying you the most?
I put the most common side effects in next post. And there are some dietary modifications listed in the post after that.

Linezolid is generally well tolerated. The adverse events reported for patients receiving the drug and comparator antibiotics (e.g., cephalosporins, clarithromycin, oxacillin, vancomycin) in clinical trials were similar. The most common adverse events for patients treated with linezolid were diarrhea (2.8—11% adults, 3.8—10.8% pediatrics), headache (0.5—11.3% adults, 0—6.5% pediatrics), nausea (3.3—9.6% adults, 1.4—3.7% pediatrics), and vomiting (0.9—3.7% adults, 1.2—9.4% pediatrics). These events were usually mild to moderate in intensity and limited in duration. Lactic acidosis has been reported with post-marketing use. In reported cases, patients experienced repeated episodes of nausea and vomiting. Patients who develop recurrent nausea or vomiting, unexplained acidosis, or a low bicarbonate level while receiving linezolid should receive immediate medical evaluation.[28599]
Adverse events reported in patients treated with linezolid in controlled trials included: rash (unspecified) (2.3% adults, 0.4—7% pediatrics), dizziness (0.4—2.6% adults), dysgeusia (0.9—1.8% adults), localized abdominal pain (1.2—1.3% adults, 0—2.4% pediatrics), generalized abdominal pain (0.9—1.2% adults, 0—2.4% pediatrics), pruritus (0—1.4% pediatrics), and tongue discoloration (0.2—1.1% adults). Loose stools (1.2—2.3%) were reported in pediatric trials. Superficial tooth discoloration has been noted in post-marketing reports; however, in cases with a known outcome, the discoloration was removable with professional dental cleaning (manual descaling).[28599] -
Linezolid is an antibiotic that is also a reversible, non-selective inhibitor of MAO. Therefore, linezolid has the potential to interact with foods. Food and dietary interactions with non-selective MAO-inhibitors can be serious. Foods or beverages containing tyramine should be avoided as a significant pressor response has been observed in normal adult subjects receiving linezolid and tyramine doses of more than 100 mg. Patients receiving linezolid should avoid consuming large amounts of foods or beverages with high tyramine content.[28599] In a placebo-controlled trial, 8 of 10 patients receiving linezolid for up to 7 days had an increase in SBP of >30 mmHg.[11067] Some ethanol-based products also contain tyramine including some beers (including reduced-ethanol and ethanol-free beer); wines (red); sherry; hard liquor; or liqueurs. The following foods should be limited during therapy with linezolid because of their tyramine content: aged cheeses; bananas, avocados or any over-ripe fruit; fava bean or broad bean pods; fermented, pickled or smoked fish, meats and sausages; pickled herring; soy sauce; yeast extract; and protein-containing foods containing high amounts of tyramine. Following discontinuation of a non-selective MAO inhibitor, dietary restrictions should continue for at least 2 weeks due to the slow recovery from the enzyme-inhibiting effects of these drugs

Hi glennie 19...thank you....i am experiencing insomnia & loss of appetite
-
Well that stinks. Try to eat whatever appeals to you. (just not on the list in the above post) Do you have any meds to help you sleep?
Hang in there.
-
I just ate an orange. tried to eat some lentil casserole but couldn't. i take clonazepam 1.5mg. I am a mess. keep getting nervous and hyperventilating a bit.
-
Got any crackers? Maybe something bland like that. Just nibble on them. Try to slow your breathing and take some deep breaths. Imagine breathing out the stress,, blowing it out like a big purple bubble. (or the color of your choice)
-
so sweet you are, love imagining the purple bubble. I am not going to make it through this one. Have had one cellulitis infection every year since the surgery. This year 3, and a scalp infection that wouldn't heal. I was in the hospital, they gave me vancomyacin IV, for only 3 days, then sent me home with a script for zy. Every place they stuck me on my good arm is inflamed, the scalp rash is moving over my face. When I look at my skin, I can see their's a battle going on, but I don't know. It moved like lightning. its just about everywear I am sorry, Really wanted to be here for my grandchild. But I believe there's a reason why we stay and why we go(for suffering) and it scares me to think that maybe this doesn't end at the end.
-
Tomatojuice, sometimes they have to try another drug. PLEASE go back to the hospital RIGHT AWAY! You're going to be okay, but you need the absolutely right IV antibiotics and rest and time. Please don't just wait this out--you need help RIGHT AWAY.
Hugs, prayers and more hugs and prayers. You sure are on my mind, Tomatojuice!
Binney -
Hi Binney, you are great. You are the reason I went when I did. It was only a suiggle on my arm. By the time I reached the ER it spread up my arm and into my hand. They told me what it was . It's more than just staph, and I did go back yesterday, they just stuck me again and gave me a script clindamyacin. But they really wanted me to stick with the Zyvox.
-
Just woke up,, tomatojuice,,, how are you today??? How is the Zyvox treating you? How does your rash look? Please report in.
-
Hi Tomato. I've been reading along and am worried about you. Please consider asking for a good probiotic recommendation. Florastor was recommended to me. (I'm in Canada so I'm not sure if it's available where you are.) I hope things are simmering down today for you.
-
I'm worried too Tomato!! HUGS and prayers for you! Hope you went back to the ER. Please update when you can.
-
Good call, marple!
tomatojuice: You can get the probiotic Culturelle here in the US over the counter. Take one cap twice a day. Helps to keep the GI flora in good shape. Keep taking it until the antibiotics are finished and one or two days afterwards. If you don't see it near the vitamins,,, ask the pharmacist for it. Sometimes they keep it behind the counter.
Hope that picture shows up!!
-
Tomatojuice, it's still morning here so I'll say "good morning" even though you're well into the afternoon. Sure hoping you're already feeling worlds better. Yep, I feel like a mama bear, and I wish I were close enough to come over, bundle you off to the ER and help out in some more concrete ways! It's hard to stick up for yourself--is there anyone who can stay with you?
No soaring off just yet, y'hear? We still need ya'!
Hugs, prayers,
Binney -
hi binney & glennie....been on 7 days zy??..started in hosp. wiyh vanco...the rash is all but gone on my lymphedema arm, but still have soreness and swelling in area of hosp. iv on my left arm. I have bi-polar and been. on lithium and no problems for more than 15 years.Had episode of mild mania in ER, mild halluciation. So at this time I am still recovering from both illnesses. I have 2 more doses of zyvox, already saw doctor for post hospital visit. Said that i am fine, I do not have Mrsa-test came back negative. Don't really know why i thought I had that. In anycase it was scary. When do you wear your sleeve after antibiotic therapy? I plan to callmy PT today. Thank you
-
TJ, I'm relieved to hear from you! Thanks for checking in--missed you! Since the redness is retreating you can use your sleeve now. But if your arm is too swollen from the IV, the sleeve may be too tight. Best to see your LE PT. It would be great if you could wrap your arm--if you don't know how, have your PT do it and teach you. It's not easy to learn, but it's a very useful skill to have.
You're sounding GOOD! Sometimes surgery anesthetic can unbalance body chemistry (potassium levels, for instance) and that can create havoc with the bi-polar symptoms--so, glad to hear that's back in control as well. You're really making progress with all the foul balls that got thrown at you all at once! Brava! Do something chocolate to celebrate.
Please keep us posted!
Gentle hugs,
Binney -
TJ: glad to see you! Sounds like you are feeling much better. The IV arm "might" be sore from the possible rough placement of the IV,,, I know my IV arm hurt for a while after surgery. Maybe ask MD if warm compresses on the arm would be OK. It's not the LE arm, right?Binney is right. All these meds can mess up your own body chemistry. When they get out of your system, I'm betting you will be feeling much better.
Glad MRSA test was negative too!
(hugs)
glennie

So glad you are on the mend TJ! I've been praying for you. Hang in there.
-
TJ, it's so great to see you seem to be on the mend.
-
thank you for reply...I have been sleeping with arm up on pillow for past two days. Unsure about my PT. I had been treated for cellulitis in late july-10 days on keflex, then 2 weeks later saw him for update on my sleeve and mld. Was wearing sleeve on & off for a few weeks, then another small rash appeared..he started me again on keflex-after day 5 when rash disappeared, he had me discontinue the keflex-two days later had flu like symptoms and nausea, then one more day, and I awoke with bad pain in lymhedema arm(unable to bend elbow or hand) He at this time said: I don't think its an infection. 6 Hours later I was in the ER here in NY where all staph in people with lymphedema (if you have had multiple seemingly resistant episodes)is treated very aggressievly. They test you for Mrsa(but the test takes 48 hrs.)so they don't wait to find out. In any case I'm still progerssing. But i feel like he did not make the right call, when i presented with the arm pain. And there was a window of 6 hours before rash came on my'arm. Maybe going to the ER could have been avoided, had he told me to just take some keflex right away. Well in any case, I was wondering(I always seem to have discomfort in my underarm area. My arm even now has very little swelling except . That area has this puffiness to it, and has always felt sensitive and painful, as it does right now. Will just wearing my sleeve and glove help with this. For me all of this is quite overwhelming, and i haven't ever really understood it. I was shown once how to wrap, but i forgot. As far as I know and i have seached, there is no lymhedema specialist that takes my insurance
-
TJ, I hear you on all this being overwhelming--that's for sure. So glad you're getting better!
Considering your recent infection history, you might want to find an Infectious Disease specialist who has experience with lymphedema to help plan how to avoid that in the future.
It does sound like you could use a second opinion from another lymphedema therapist. Have you checked out all the therapists in your area on the Therapist Locator here?
http://www.mylymphedema.com/therapist.htmLearning to wrap is kind of a huge project--at least it sure was for me. You need someone who can stick with you and teach you over time.
Gentle hugs,
Binney -
it is overwhelming, TJ,, I feel ya on that. It's been one of the hardest parts of this whole BC "adventure" for me.If you do not see an LE therapist on your insurance,,, find one in your area,, and then call your insurance. INSIST that you need an LE certified therapist. Tell them to find you one. If they can't, tell them you want to see so and so,, whoever you find. Insist on a waiver. Get RX from MD for LE therapy. I had to do all of that to get my visits covered. I have to see just the one person that I signed up with. If she is on vacation, I can't see anyone else. Oh well, at least I have her!
Best of luck.. you gotta be pushy with the insurance.
-
hi glennie..thanks,really good info. I will try if . hope i do not get anther infection, before i get my energy back.sorry you do not have yours allthe time.
-
TJ,, I wish you the best,,, will keep my fingers crossed for you,, no more infections and that you find a good therapist. -
hi binney...antibiotics finished...Doctor searching for LE Specialist for me to see..I couldn't wrap if i knew(supplies). Have to admit without LE specialist feel a bit afraid of wearing my sleeve & hand(also afraid of not). Feel alone with this. This morning had bout of diarrhea. have been taking probiotics for 3 or 4 months before antibiotics, started taking again. That seems to have subsided, but still a concern
-
i have a camisole tank that provides good amount of compression. I put it on along with my sleeve & glove. Feels good, hope I am doing the right thing. will keep it on, and wear it out tomorrow.
