I've had extensive pocket work and even muscle repair during the last couple of surgeries and still no drains. I assume I won't have them after the upcoming Sept 19th surgery #5, but will be surprised if I wake up with drains. Who knows though. This whole process has been a series of strange events and weird feelings.

Julie - you look great!  My pre-op is tomorrow so I guess I will learn more then.  I am definitely not looking forward to another surgery, but I guess my feeling this time is nervous and excited both.  I am looking forward as Linda said to get this over with.

Can I ask was there any big difference for exchange surgery than the prior?  Mine is going to be done at a surgery center in my PS building versus a hospital.  I really think at this point in time I'm going to skip the nipple surgery and go with the 3d tattoo.

Julie do you feel you had enough time off of work?  My PS office keeps telling me 4-6 weeks, but I am also having a lift/reduction too.

    Looking great Julie!

Thinking about all my March sisters as we continue to move forward.  I'm excited for those that are preparing for their upcoming exchange surgeries.

Frostecat,  I also had my exchange surgery done at the surgery center. The people there were awesome. .  It was a breeze.  I took 12 bix days off of work with the double exchange.  My sister had a lift and augmentation and was off for 4 weeks so that sounds about right.  I am also considering the 3d tattoos.  I'm still on the fence with that.

Frostecat, it sounds like you would require a longer recovery because of the lift and reduction.  I wish I had taken 2 full weeks off.  Working was fine but with pulling open drawers and doors and lifting things, I felt sore at the end of the day.

Ah, hindsight. Don't beat yourself up. We all make the best decisions we can with the information we have available at the time.

After this epic journey in BC world, there is no way I'm doing more than is absolutely necessary. No titoos for me. I'll stick with Barbie boobs. With my luck, something would go wrong. Loopy

Trying to get myself mentally prepared for the exchange surgery on 9-2 and finding that I'm not doing a very good job at it. I honestly wasn't afraid to go in for the BMX at all but just the thought of being operated on again is leaving me terrified. Maybe I am finally headed for the breakdown that I have never had yet. My MO also suddenly stopped my Femara as of yesterday. Wants me on nothing at all until one week post exchange and will start me on Tamoxifen instead. He was not happy with the SE's I am having with the Femara and thinks I may do better with Tamoxifen. Who knows. Feeling like a yo-yo at this point. Doesn't help that our 16 year anniversary is Friday and I'm not feeling like celebrating. Poor husband is being such a good sport about all of this. Just not feeling like myself at all. OK pity party over :(

KLJ, it's ok to have ups and downs. We've been through a lot of difficult things!  I had my first complete meltdown a week after my exchange.  I rarely cry, maybe once or twice a year, but I basically sobbed for an hour.  My poor boyfriend was there to comfort me.  I couldn't even verbalize why I was so upset but part of it was knowing that I would never be normal again and I will have the threat of recurrence hanging over my head. Eventually it all catches up to you.

I think you'll feel better after you are done with your surgery and you're on your tamoxifen.  Part of the stress of all of this is the unknown.  The exchange surgery for me was really so much easier.  I am still feeling soreness and tightness but it is totally different than the BMX.  Hang in there.  You'll be past this soon :-)

KLJ - I'm scheduled for 9/9 and like you, this seems to be bothering me more than the initial surgery.  I think the first time around I was oblivious as to what I was in for, and this time around not so much.  I'm also going to be having a lift/reduction so both breasts are involved.  I was told I would have a drain, on the TE side not the lift side.

My PS told me that fat grafting is not covered by insurance, even though it should be, so he is encouraging me to have liposuction so he can fat graft at the same time.Has anyone else's surgeons told them fat grafting is not covered?

I think I'm going to go ahead with the lipo - it's scary as all heck to me, but I can use a small stomach to match my smaller breasts.  There is an out of pocket cost to me.  I guess I have buyers remorse for not going with a BMX initially (knowing what I do now), so I just want to get everything over with and let the healing begin.  My PS said, if I come to him a year from now for fat grafting the cost would be more, then while I'm already in surgery.  I asked him if it were you would you do it, he said absolutely without a doubt.

Fat grafting for revision purposes is covered by insurance, however it is only covered for the amount of fat needed to correct the defect.  That usually does not remove enough fat to see a difference in the donor site.  Insurance companies receive the surgical reports that indicate what amount of fat was removed and what amount was re-injected.  If they see much more removed than used they will reject the claim and deny payment as it will be considered cosmetic.  This is most likely what your PS is referring to, and why he is indicating that you should pay for lipo outright.  You do run a risk though - your insurance company can refuse to pay for the other extraneous surgical charges as part of the cosmetic procedure - the anesthesiologist, OR suite, etc.  My PS will not combine covered and non-covered procedures for this reason.  You should make sure your insurance company is on board with this plan.

Well they talked me into it.  I think my PS felt he could get better results with lipoing under my armpit area too.  The nurse said he can get "good fat" from the abdomen.  I hope I'm not getting the runaround, but I've trusted my PS so far, and he is very well respected.  I think he is somewhat of a perfectionist and he wants to obtain optimum results.  I'm having my abdomen done, he wanted to do my flanks too, but I can not afford all of that.  I'm a bit nervous about this, but he said if it were him he would do it without a doubt and all his staff keeps telling me that I will be so happy that I did it.

I guess what is pushing me over the edge is I don't want anymore regrets, or second guessing myself, in hindsight wishing I had done something especially now that I am somewhat regretting choosing a UMX over a BMX.

I think I'm larger than a lot of you gals on the forums, I am built like so many women who reach menopause and look pregnant, I carry most of my weight in my belly. So he's probably thinking a smaller tummy to go with the smaller boobies!

frostecat - I hop this surgery is everything you want it to be, I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you.  You will be in a certain amount of discomfort, certainly more than a regular exchange, and more than for a normal BC related fat grafting because of the fat removal volume.  I felt beat up and had a burning type of pain when I pulled the compression garments over my abdominal skin, but it didn't last long.  The first few days were uncomfortable, but I was fine a week out.  I did not have fat grafting as part of my exchange - I did it a year later.  My PS required 8 weeks of compression and I learned that it was much easier to wear compression with a snap or hook crotch closure - otherwise I had to take off the whole thing to go to the bathroom!  My fat grafting was done to fill in divots above my implants because I am petite and have a bony chest, and it was the best thing - made everything look soft and much more natural.  It is looking like my PS wants to fat graft several times prior to trying the expander to implant again, much like they are now doing with radiated skin, I will start in October.

Frostecat, I hope this surgery is everything you expect it to be. I am sure it will be! Listen to SpecialK. She has been my "go to" wealth of information. I carry my extra weight in my belly too. Don't most of us? The dreaded menopause middle! I will be thinking about you on your surgery day. Mine is one week before you so I will be recuperating and waiting to hear that you are doing great!

KLJ - good luck to you Tuesday - hoping everything goes as well as possible!  I'll eagerly await your posts.

SpecialK - They have warned me that I will feel uncomfortable, like playing football without the pads.  My recovery will already be a little tougher anyways than just an exchange being that I will be having a lift/reduction too (hence this is why I am now wishing I had BMX).  So SpecialK am I reading your post correctly that you too had lipo? Or was it just what they needed for fat grafting?  My PS is a huge proponent of fat grafting.  I have a major indent under my armpit, and my dog ears are very prominent and he said the fat grafting will help that.  Petite and bony would only be wishful thinking for me!

They told me I would be out of commission for 4 weeks, but they told me that before I decided on the lipo.  They said the lipo will not extend my recovery time.

frostecat - I only had enough lipo for the necessary fat grafting to be done, so mine was covered by insurance as a revision.  My abdomen was the donor site and I needed fat added to the chest, as opposed to any taken away on, or near (dog ears or underarm) for any correction to my recon.

Juliecc Yes I did! Still very groggy. Had an allergic reaction to something in the anesthesia today. Never had that happen before. Still.feeling the itching. I can already tell that the expander are out and I am.so much more comfortable without them. I see my PS tomorrow morning so I will get all the details!

Congrats, KLJ!!!  I hope your itchiness goes away.  I never heard of that from anesthesia but I have n allergy to IV iodine.  Take it easy.

Congrats KLJ - sorry I haven't been able to check in (been out of town celebrating one last mini vacation and my birthday before my exchange).  Allergy stuff scares me, but it sounds like they caught it and treated it early.  Can't believe you posted so quickly afterwards - amazing!  Keep us posted on your progress.

thanks  Julie and Frostecat. Saw the PS yesterday and he thinks the itchiness is from the soap he scrubbed me with prior to surgery. He explained to me that he PERSONALLY really scrubbed me down which explains the goo at the back of my neck and in my hair. That's a visual I could have done without! He told.me.to shower this afternoon and just the the water run down the front and back. Kind of afraid though because I still have drains in. I am going to call and talk to his nurse before I do anything!

Happy with what I saw yesterday though. He took everything off except for the steri strips. So I just have the surgical bra and the horrid strap that I hate so much!

Frostecat, isn't it great that we can still laugh after all of this? It's one of the great things that we still have left! I wonder if I will EVER get that visual out of my head though LOL!

Hey KLJ! Glad to hear that things went well besides the itching. I hear ya on the visual. I had a little scratch on my inner upper arm after the exchange and all I could imagine was that it was a fingernail scratch from someone trying to hold me up while the PS tried to decide on the size implant to use. It is not a flattering image. I too can still laugh, and cry, and laugh...and cry. I like the laughing or even better making others laugh. Enjoy the squishy side!

Thanks Stfne! Do you have a date yet for your exchange or did you already have it? It's funny now how many different aches and pains are appearing. Like a sore neck. Makes me wonder if someone was holding me up so he could decide if he had placed the right implants or not. Or, did they strap me down??? It's definitely nothing I would want to see on video! But you're right...we laugh, we cry, we laugh, we cry. And in the end I hope we all end up laughing :) all the time!

Klj, sorry you have drains!  Did you get anatomicals?  What is the strap for?  Is it one you wear across the top?

    Frostecat, it's almost your turn!

Julie, I wish I knew which one's he went with. I forgot to ask. I asked before they put me under and he said he ordered 9 different sets so hopefully he picked the best! I will find out next week. I whined about the drains and was promptly told it was for my own good but they are hardly putting out anything now so I am calling tomorrow to see if they can come out. Fingers crossed! Yes, the strap is the one that goes across the top. He is adamant about that darn thing. So uncomfortable but it stays for 2 weeks. I can't wait to burn this thing :) I can see the light at the end of this tunnel! How are you doing?

I'm doing well, thanks.  The soreness, tightness, and iron bra feeling is much better than it was, thank goodness.  My sternum is a lttle tender if I push on it but I'm basically back to normal.
