Starting Back to Exercise... baby steps

Would love to be at the level of the "Let's Post Our Daily Exercise" ladies, but I'm not there yet. Feeling as if I were to make myself accountable I might be more consistent. Right now, any exercise would be an improvement for me.

Hoping we can support each other as we begin a fitness program - whether that's stretching, walking only 5 minutes, doing some exercises while watching TV, or chores around the house. It all counts! And if for some good reason we can't exercise on a particular day, not to criticize ourselves for it. Tomorrow is another day!

Did some gentle stretching exercise today (still have lots of tightness across my chest (from recon) and around the sides and back (revision, mud-flap removal).

A start for me: walked 4 laps around the park today (about 1-1/2 miles). Was talking on the cell while walking, but it's a start for me.

Maybe some suggestions for easy exercises to build confidence?

1 & 1/2 Mile walk is a really good start.  Some days, I'm only walking 15 mins!    I am nowhere near the fitness level of the ladies on that other thread.  I feel kinda depressed reading it, cuz I used to be in better shape.  Now i'm scheduled for a hysterectomy next month,, and I know I'll be starting over yet again.  :(

Tomorrow's plan is to do my usual morning walk,,, get some bill paying, etc done on the computer and then go to Planet Fitness for some cardio in the AC!!  Recum bike and the elliptical machine. Really have to work up my endurance on the elliptical, but gotta start somewhere!!

Glennie, sounds like you're starting off really well!  Do what you can do, that's all. Don't look at the surgery next month, it will take care of itself.

Started the day off with stretching exercises, particularly for the chest area (still have pain over a year after last revision sx) and using a large exercise ball, tummy problems (thought some of the fruit wasn't fresh when I used the juicer) so taking it easy. Besides, we had a power outage and way too hot and stifling for the stationary bike. Did walk up and down stairs a lot today.

I am 5 weeks post chemo. I have neurapathy in my legs and it sucks. Somedays, if I've been sitting for even a couple minutes, or when I get out of bed, it is all I can do to walk to the bathroom. But I have 5 kids who all have Down syndrome. My life requires me to be an active participant. I HAVE GOT to get up and move, even though I feel like I just aged 25-30 years. The pain is in my joints, but my entire legs feel like they're full of cement. Although I'm on lasix, the fluid I have sitting in my legs isn't going anywhere until I get up and move.

I used to work out every day. Now I need to start as if I never have in my life. I think, because of the neurapathy, I should start doing some water aerobics or something very low impact. I hate this feeling of not really being able to do anything. I was so active before chemo.

Noonrider, so sorry to hear about chemo. Does it mean you are finished, completely? Taking care of kids (any kids) requires a lot of activity. Can you some chair exercises: simple movements or stretching? Sometimes, that was all I could after surgeries. Good for you for trying!

Please please don't feel intimidated by the ladies on the other thread. We all had to start somewhere and any movement is better than none. I started walking to tolerance and doing gentle yoga. I get horrible leg cramps from the Tamoxifen but have found that walking for 15 minutes or so a day help ward them off. Day by day,  you will get stronger and able to walk a bit farther or do a few minutes more on the Elliptical or recumbent bike (another excellent way to start)..

    Wishing everyone a happy Friday!

lespring:  5 kids! Yikes!  That will keep you busy even w/o the chemo.  Water exercises sound like a good choice with the neuropathy. Or maybe a recumbent bike would work for you. Do you have access to a gym ?

odie:  thank you for your words of encouragement. It's hard to not feel disheartened when I'm struggling to walk a mile or two, and someone over there is biking 60! I know they started at the beginning too, but they are at a whole different level now.  I kinda like this baby steps for those of us starting the journey.

Odie, I will get there someday! I really appreciate you taking the time to post here.

    Glennie expressed my exact feelings.

I have met a bunch of the ladies on the other thread, they are so totally awesome! It's difficult for me to explain, but I feel intimidated by what they can do, it's nothing they're doing. Plus, I have a crazy life right now and NOTHING is predictable or consistent so I don't feel I'm of their caliber yet. I'm not putting them down, but on the other hand, I have read there are also other women like me who want to start out a little slower.

For me, right now, I need an esteem builder in this area.

2ta, Thanks so much for starting this thread. I share your feelings of intimidation. Besides, where's the fun in saying I walked 2 miles when someone biked 200. I have been a couch potato most of my life. I just haven't found any activity that is fun. We used to go hiking and I loved being out in nature, but DH really can't do that now. I've been in a cast/brace for months for tendonitis in my ankle. I'm starting to wonder if it's a side effect of Arimidex. I've had 3 episodes in different places and I'm starting to get suspicious.

Thank you for starting this thread. I wish exercise was like reading, cooking, doing some craft activity or playing bingo which I love.  I want it to be like breathing or second nature where the thought of not doing it will make me mental!  I'm not even in the ball park.

I have a sedentary job & I used to have 3-4hr commute.  The commute is gone, but the sedentary job remains (no complaints).

I really have to change the way my brain thinks about exercising.

I'm going to the gym & sign up on Saturday.  They have a pool and I think every type/kind of exercise equipment a person could ask for.  I'm terribly intimidated about the whole thing, but at 55 I've decided to TRY and push myself out of being comfortable, because being comfortable isn't so much anymore.

My daughter signed us up for a 5k in October.  At this point, I can't get out to the street to pick up the mail!  I have a little work between now and then!

Here's to taking baby steps in the right direction!!!   I wish you a the best in whatever activity you choose.

I'm with you on this. I sit at my desk for hours and only get up to use ladies room. I would love to start exercising, but honestly I'm lazy.  We have a stationary bike in the basement that holds my pocketbooks...lol. Maybe I will use it for 5 minutes starting today.

Will post later to let you know.

wren:  hard to exercise when you have a cast!!  You could do some sitting exercises, but I know I find them boring. It ain't easy. I'm glad we light weights can be here to support each other.

Patty:  I hope the gym works out for you. Try a recumbent bike,, nice easy way to start off. I find it's boring after a while, but it's a good place to start.  The weight machine generally have instructions on them, but be brave and ASK for help. If you've had lymph nodes removed,,, start weights VERY SLOWLY!!!  Pool exercises are great;  i wish my gym had one, ,but I'm at the $10/month gym and they don't.  If I could move up to the $48/month gym,,, I could get a pool.  And classes,, which my gym doesn't have.

shorfi:  I love that you hang purses on the bike!  Go for 5 mins,, heck,, go for 3!!  We are here for you!!

    Went to the gym:

    Arc trainer:  5 mins

    recumbent bike:  5 mins

elliptical:  2 mins 30 secs.     that one is the hardest one for me and also the only one that uses arms.  I have to take care not to annoy my Lymphedema, so I'm increasing that one VERY slowly.

    baby steps.

Sunny Girl, Shorfi and others: you're welcome! The important thing is that even baby steps are better than not starting (and for me, finding excuses).

Ok, I'm embarrassed and stumped: I thought I responded to lesoring, but now Noonrider! Is my mind playing tricks on me?

Sunny Girl, is the 5K a walk or run! Not that is makes a big difference, it's still exercise.

Shorfi, love that the stationary bike is being put to good use! Mine just sits in the front room, calling me and I ignore it. When I do get on it, it isn't bad but so much to do and so little time, it's all about priorities.

Glennie, you are the star of the day!

I got in my stretches, and lots of trips upstairs and down, but never got to the stationary bike (one of my highest priorities is finding a job, I've been unemployed for too long and that took more time than planned) and had errands to run. Am happy I did get some meditation in (something I'm trying to integrate into every day), poor excuse for exercise.

    Tomorrow is a new day.

Have a great weekend everyone! For those who choose, weekends can be a time from exercise if you so decide.

Another couch potato/sloth here!  Exercise has never been my forte.  I am lazy by nature.  In the past, I had signed up to gyms multiple different times, but I never went enough to be worth the money.  For the past year I have been trying to get into a walking routine as much as I can.  I will walk at lunch if I have enough time, and walk after work some days.  I tried to do the running thing, starting slow, but it just kicked my butt!  Couldn't run for more than 30 seconds before completely dying.  So I have been mostly sticking with the fitness walking.  I don't know how some ladies find the time to do all the exercising they do.  I work full time and need to get home to make dinner and take care of household stuff.  Maybe if I spent less time here on BCO I could burn more calories!  Ooh, I could hook up my computer to a treadmill or elliptical and multitask!  Glad to know that there are lots of others out there that aren't athletic goddesses.

Well, only got in about 15 minutes of walking today.  Tomorrow I'll make an effort to go out after work and work up a sweat!

Checking in - walked the last 2 days, just under 1/2 mile each day.  I was wiped, that's how much this sedentary girl could do.

Didn't walk today because my knee's / legs were sore this AM.  Took 1 day off and will be back at it tomorrow. I know I'm going to be stiff & sore as I start out, but don't want to cause injury.

I know I feel better mentally when I walk, nothing I can put my finger on, just better.

    Walk on!!

Yesterday was day 1 of water therapy. They have a chair .lift that oh so smoothly let me in and out of the pool. Then I fell at home, so I can' tell what is sore from what.

YAY!  Everyone is getting out there and doing something. It doesn't matter how much. Just move a little bit each day. I did take yesterday off, but I'll go back to my friend the Arc Trainer at the gym later on this morning.  It does help to exercise in the AC!!  It's dang hot out there.

No Bueno on the falling ADJ!

I hate when I'm upright walking and for whatever reason I seem to hit the floor.  Whether it's the dog that's taken me out, or I trip or I'm just plain old clumsy - I just don't like it!

Here's to all of us staying upright.  Seems easy enough as I write it.

Yeah, got out for a good 35 minute fitness walk today after work.  Feels so good to be outside in the warm sunshine.  Even if my efforts don't lead to any weight loss, it makes me feel better.

One wk past getting TEs out & implants in: no long walks for me due to back issues. Have to do crunches to strengthen my core so my back doesn't bother Too much (sedentary job doesn't help). Doing squats, leg stretches, very gentle stretches of arms & upper body, very light weights just to keep biceps strong without working the pect muscles.  Too shy to go to a gymn & no room in my tiny apt for exercise bike - does anyone have other suggestions for exercises to do at home for strength?

Thanks for this forum! I'm not really lazy, but I'd much rather read during this week off work - it's more fun. But since I want the strength, I will do what it takes - as long as I don't have to sweat much. Ha, ha!

I recently bought the CD, Yoga for Beginners available on Amazon, put out by bodywisdom media. Nice gentle exercises although I've only used it a couple of times due to complications of surgery and RADs that are keeping me pretty sore. But I think I'll get into it. Had to drop weekly Pilates classes due to problems I was having re: recovery, but I wasn't really enjoying them anyway.

Everything I've read says exercise is one of the most important things we can do, so I know I have to get with it, but I've always been thin despite not exercising and lazy and until this dx, had no real motivation to exercise. It's hard for me. The only thing I actually like to do is walk and the weather has been so miserable that I have passed on going outdoors lately unless I absolutely have to.

Anyway, planning to put that CD in sometime today and do at least 45 minutes of yoga!
