Just curious about everyone BRCA status and if you had a mastectomy or lumpectomy.   I just had the BRCA test done and I'm awaiting the results.  I've already had a lumpectomy and I'm almost finished with chemo.   I worry about the results and whether i'll end up needing a mastectomy.    I'm just looking for others experience with this.

Dixie1 - I was diagnosed with cancer.  Because of my younger age, BRCA testing was done.  I waited for my results before making surgery decisions.  I was BRCA +, thus went ahead with BMX at initial surgery.  I also had my oopherectomy during the same surgery.  BRCA + sucks.  Hope your test comes back negative!

Thank you Bayoubabe.  I wish they had run the test when I was diagnosed but for some reason they waited until now to do it.  I've been looking up information online and from one report I saw it might be better to be + rather than -.  Guess I will just have to wait and see what my MO recommends.

Dixie1 - if you are searching for more info on BRCA, please go to the FORCE website, www.facingourrisk.org.  You will find lots of good reliable information there.

New to all this. Just had genetic testing friday waiting for the results they say takes 2 weeks. I have 8 more radiation treatments. I can't wait for all this to be behind me. Worried about the tests praying for negative results.

    Hi Ladies!

I haven't posted in a while and just saw this forum and here I am!! Lol...

I was diagnosed Triple Negative 2012.  I knew I was BRCA1+ for years as I had been on surveillance since having Ovarian Cancer 18 years ago. I had wanted a prophylactic BMX years ago, but at that time they weren't doing them back then. Once they developed gene testing I had it done in 2006 and confirmed what I had suspected all along, that I was BRCA1 positive. They still were not doing preventative surgeries so surveillance was on my agenda. When they were finally doing them, I couldn't get it done as I developed some weird drug allergies, and they said they would only do it if needed..

Well, in 2012 it was needed. I went for my Mammo which was negative, U/S also negative but my MRI showed a nodule. I had an initial open incision biopsy and sure enough, positive for breast cancer, and Triple Negative as is the case for most (not all) BRCA1 positive women. The decision was then made to have the BMX...and so I did. Went through chemo and recon as well. Here it is a little over 2 years out from diagnosis and I'm glad it's now behind me. I personally recommend if anyone is BRCs positive, having a BMX I feel is a life saving procedure. I also had ovarian cancer in 1998 went through chemo and full hysterectomy for that and am glad to be alive from that ordeal.

I wish you well in all your decisions and in your treatments... Hugs to all!! if you have any questions! please free to message me..

    Lisa :)
