i've been taking Hercepton for 4 months now and i want to color my hair. It is extremely white, which it wasn't before chemo. Has anyone had a problem with their hair breaking off after coloring their hair? Or can you suggest a gentle hair dye for me to use?

I used Level 1 hair dyes - the ones that are only supposed to last 8 washes rather than the permanent ones.  Level 1 dyes have less harsh chemicals, although all dyes contain chemicals.

Here is a post I did in my blog on this subject:  http://iameclectica.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/colouring-hair-after-chemotherapy.html

thank you so much......i got conflicting answers from my oncologist and the nurses. I refuse to wear this white hair when i originally had dark hair before i was diagnosed.

    Tobyholic,

You might want to give your hair a bit longer on the color.

My hair came in white the first 3 months and then color started appearing.  I looked like a calico cat with patches of white, gray, blond, brown and red.

Eventually it seemed to be a pretty shade of red (I was a dark brown before chemo) but then slowly turned a medium brown with red highlights.

It took about a year for the color to even out and stabilize.

when you did color your hair, did you use a semi permanent color? I dont want to use a permanent color until I'm done with herceptin.

I use an all natural permanent hair color I buy in the healthfood store .....I like it and it looks natural like my "old" hair ;)

When I got my diagnosis I was dyeing my hair blond-light brown but my roots were white.  When the first fraction of an inch came in in June of 2008 (I was 68 then) I went with a nonpermanent chartreuse, green, purple.  I Included coloring that responded to black light.  It was fun!  I recommend trying it.  I got too busy at work to keep up with the maintenance so that phase lasted only about 3-4 years.  Since I'm stage IV I'm on and will be on Herceptin as long as it is still working.  The folks in the infusion unit keep asking me to bring back the primary colored hair.  Maybe I will but never pink.  I was also told that another woman had her her fuzzy new hair custom colored to resemble a leopard.  I wish I had seen that.  Trying to get a second color as a streak was too much for me.
