Gina, such a nice positive message. Yes we can. There are some dark days, but the progress & change comes quickly. I hope all continues to go well with you.
-
Hope everyone is doing OK. Still have the one drain where I had the infection. The official diagnosis was breast cellulitis and abscess according to the hospital info and the home health nurse. Still on the IV abx, too. They are a PITA!!! I'm hoping that when I see the PS on Wed he will tell me I can stop them.
I had originally planned on trying to going back to work part time 9/2, but since I didn't get to see the PS this week, and I don't see him again until 9/3, I have put it off until at least 9/8. I've decided that I don't want to go back to work doing the abx because it's too much trouble. I'm still pretty sore anyway. I'm hurting more on my left side now, and I have to sleep upright in the recliner (not enough pillows to keep be upright in the bed).
-
Hi Everyone,
I have really enjoyed reading everyone's updates.
Straitlover, I hope the abx are doing their job and you get good news on Wednesday from your PS. I don't work outside the home but am still so sore and swollen and tire easily... I can't imagine going back to work after what you have had to deal with lately. I sleep with many, many pillows holding me in position... I miss sleeping on my side so much! Hope you get to sleep in a more comfortable place and position soon!
I haven't posted in a while.... guess I was feeling sad and still trying to wrap my head around having positive nodes, and all that comes with that. I am so tired of feeling sore and tired. I thought I would be feeling better by now; my surgery was 5 weeks ago!
I received some good news: my NM bone scan and CTs of chest, abdomen and pelvis showed no signs that the cancer had set up home elsewhere.
Next week I meet with my MO and RO. I don't even know what to expect or what to ask them.
You have all been in my thoughts and prayers.
Poppy

Straitlover--I've been reading a lot about cellulitis in posts. What's it like? What were the visible symptoms? How did it feel? It seems to be more common in reconstruction than I was aware of prior to my surgery. I hope you're feeling stronger. The recliner was my only hope of finding sleep for over a month. You appear to be a strong woman. You will recover and work when ready.
-
Becky, I'm not sure where mine came from actually. I pulled a stitch in a drain line and could not move my arm w/o severe pain, so I went to the ER that Fri evening. When I got there, my temp was normal. While I was waiting to be seen, all of a sudden my temp shot up and I was shaking and shivering and got really nauseous. The hospital couldn't find anything as to why I had a fever, so they called the hosp where I had my surgery and they wanted me back. So I was shipped back to Raleigh Sat morning. All of a sudden, the drainage in my right drain turned all cloudy and full of pus. I didn't have the red rash like must people get. My right breast was big and hard, but not more than when I came out of surgery (PS filled that TE more than the left one). So I don't know if pulling the stitch allowed infection inside while I was waiting in the ER w/ all those sick people or if it was just a coincidence and was already in htere and just ahppened to kick in while I was at the hospital.
I guess not everyone's symptoms are the same. Can be a red rash, red squiggly lines like any old infection, fever, pain, bad drainage if you still have a drain in.
-
Poppy- I know the feeling my surgery was five weeks ago too and I thought I would be much further along. I miss sleeping on my side too
.
Strairlover - I hope you are feeling much better! What an ordeal you have been through.

Went back to the PS today. Wants to keep me on the iv abx and the last drain in for one more week - ugh! I am going back to work PT starting Monday (however much I can stand each day w/o overdoing it), so i will just deal with it, I guess. He's being extra careful (said we dodged a bullet), so I guess I shouldn't complain too much about it.
At least I actually saw him this time. Don't recall if I said it, but at my appt last week, the PA sand he had been admitted to the hospital himself for IV abx. He said today that he was there for almost a week, so he must have just gotten out in the last day or two. He was looking a little worse for wear, LOL.
Poppy, have you had your appt this week yet? I see my MO next week 9/11 (also have to see the periodontist that day too for a cleaning, fun fun!). I believe she is the one who decides on chemo or rads? The BS did not say anything the other day when he called about anything in the nodes, but until I see the path report myself I won't feel comfortable about it since there were so many questions.
-
My goodness Straitlover, you have been through so much! It sounds like your PS wants to make sure your infection doesn't come back. I hope this next week is an easy one for you and that you feel stronger every day! Wow, your PS was in the hospital for a week? That's a long time.
I saw my MO yesterday and the RO this morning. I will have chemo because of my positive node. I should start within 2 weeks. Radiation would start 3 weeks from my last chemo infusion. My MO went into great detail how the determination for chemo is made. Every step of the decision making process as it relates to my case was explained, as well as the chemo meds chosen. I think she spent an hour and a half talking to me.
You may want to call your BS back and ask specifically about your nodes. Then you can be better prepared with your questions during the visit with your MO. Hope your nodes are negative!

Well, I guess i don't have to worry about the last drain because it fell out a little while ago!!!! At first I noticed that it had come out some and the bulb wouldn't keep suction. I called the PS & left a VM. Before he could call me back, I bent over and the end fell out!!! I washed my hands really well and put a bandaid on it. He called back and said it was OK since the drainage had still been clear, and I just needed to put some gauze on it and keep an eye out for fever until my appt w/ him on Wed morning.
He said I could still shower/bathe, but I'm not taking any chances. It's back to sink baths at least until I see him. Fingers crossed that no bacteria/infection/etc gets in!
-
It feels a bit like déjà vu. I'm back admitted in the hospital, same one that I had surgery in July. I also have cellulitis and am on intravenous antibiotics. Most likely an infected tissue expander. They think when I did my first round of chemo two weeks ago, it suppressed my immune system and allowed the bacteria to grow. My MO would not do second round of chemo yesterday which was a really good call, since the oral antibiotics I started a few days ago apparently weren't strong enough because it got much worse between yesterday morning and this morning. Hoping I won't be in the hospital more than a day or two and can get back on my chemo schedule soon. Hope all my July surgery buddies are doing OK!
-
So sorry Purplegurli! I hope they abx work and they don't have to do surgery. My PS had considered opening me back up and washing everything out and replacing the TE, but my bloodwork kept looking good, so he just sent me home w/ IV abx for 3 weeks. Hoping to get my picc line out this coming Friday.
They need to make really sure the infection is cleared up before starting the chemo back, so don't be surprised if it's put off for a little bit.
Just curious, what were your symptoms? I never got the rash, pain or anything, just pulled the stitch in the drain and spiked a fever while waiting in the ER to see the doc.
-
Hi Straightlover,
Thanks for checking in. My breast swelled up a great deal. I thought I overdid the housecleaning but when it did not improve after several days, I went to the PS and they diagnosed as cellulitis based on swelling, pain, redness and warmth to touch and put me on an oral antibiotic. By yesterday morning, there was also some bubbling/blistering around the nipple scar line which really freaked me out and they sent me to the emergency room. I had been running a fever a couple of degrees above normal, but I had also picked up a cold from my daughter at the same time so hard to know what the fever was from. Once I got to the hospital and they ran labs, my whie blood cell count was 14,000 which apparently was confirmation of infection. Yes, I'm hoping they can salvage the tissue expander and also that I don't get too far off schedule on chemo. They will keep me in the hospital until at least tomorrow afternoon and then I think the plan is to send me home with IV antibiotics. Fingers crossed.
-
Well, crap! I'm headed back into surgery tomorrow AM. My PS called me earlier today, and he said he woke up in the middle of the night worrying about me and the drain falling out and such. So, he wants to go in and do the "power wash" and reinsert the TE. I can't remember if he said if it would be the same TA or a new one. It's supposed to be outpatient, and the hospital will call me in the AM telling me what time to be there. My sister can't get here until around 1PM tomorrow, so it's been interesting trying to arrange some transport.
Purplegurli, hope you're getting better. At home IV abx are sooooo fun - not! Wonder if I'll have to stay on them longer now???? It's not that bad, it just ties you down depending on how may ones you have to take. I have two, so coordinating the schedule is a pain.
-
Straightlover, best of luck tomorrow. Let me know how it goes because I think that will be the next step for me if the antibiotics don't do the job. I'll be thinking of you!
-
purplegurl and straitlover I am so sorry you both are going through this! My thoughts are with you.
-
Purplegurl and Straitlover - I too am sorry that you happen to get this cellulitis, I hope antibiotics will start soon and fix it for good.
Strailover thinking about you during the surgery!
-
Yay, they are releasing me from the hospital this afternoon after my next IV antibiotic treatment. I will continue IV antibiotics two times a day from home. And they said OK to do my make-up chemo session on Thursday because my white blood cell count us back to normal and the infection is improving. Glad to hopefully be back on track.
-
Yay Purplegurll!!!! What abx do they have you taking? I am on vancomyacin and Maxipene (sp?).
I made it through the surgery and am home. With a new drain, ugh! He did replace the TE, not put the one I ahd back in. He didn't fill it up quite as much as the first time, so I'm not so lopsided, LOL! Got to the hospital around 9:45 and left at 4:15. It was 1:34 when they wheeled me in the OR; this time I was still awake, I guess because they didn't have to put me so far under because it was a shorter sx? Luckily they were able to use my picc line I have for the abx for the IV; otherwise they would have had to put the IV in my foot or put in a central line since I had nodes removed from both sides.
-
Straitlover, glad you are home and the surgery was a success. I will have Teflaro two times a day starting tomorrow. Today I had an infusion of daptomycin because the Teflaro was not yet available. In the hospital I had vancomycin and something else (maybe started with letter z) the first day and then switched to another medication, possibly Teflaro, the other two days. It's been confusing!
-
Saw the oncologist today. No chemo!!!!! Path shows it was a .9cm low grade adenosquamous carcinoma. Path states "while these tumors have a propensity of local recurrence, mastectomy appears curative". They also found a .3cm DCIS in there, but the mx took care of that (no rads or chemo needed, lymph nodes were clear). No meds to take since the tumor was not hormone positive. Don't even have to go back to the onc until December! She did say that if it reoccurs, it would be on the skin, so I have to keep a watch on any skin changes.
Left side showed nipple duct adenoma, intraductal papillomas (which the adenosquamous carc. I had in the right can develop from), radial scars, and florid ductal hyperplasia of usual type, and focal atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH). None may be cancer, but I'm extra glad it's all gone now.
So, all I have to deal with right now is the reconstruction and clearing up the infection.
-
Straitlover,
No chemo and negative nodes is fantastic news! I am so happy for you!
I hope you are infection free soon!
-
Wow, Straitlover, that is INCREDIBLE news! You must be overjoyed. Heal quickly!
-
straitlover that's incredible news!! Congrats! I hope the infection clears up soon.

Hello kellog2006,
Yes, I did have one step immediate implant on July 21st. Although I am happy with the way I look, I am going through a lot of chest contractions. My chest muscle feels so tight, I have to do the excises my PT gave me, very often to release the tight feeling. My PS also gave me prescription for, Montelukast 10mg, that is supposed to help me with the scar tissues on 8/26. At this point, I am a little nervous about CC... This is my first post, but I have found this forum to be very helpful and inspirational.
-
straitlover - great news!
Kellog - how are you doing with your little one now? Mine started to walk 2 weeks ago, means less lifting for me
-
blessed- thanks. I'm sorry you are having some problems. I think I am seven weeks out from my surgery now. I am feeling better. I haven't been to my PS in about 5 weeks. I go back next week. I just thought I would be feeling more normal. Though I do feel much better. I am still swollen and it just feels weird.
Kimag - Your little moments walking. Oh my, watch out! Mine is doing good, I have started to lift him a little. He's also teething so that sucks but at least when we all up with him I don't have to work in the morning!
-
Kellog- I am glad you are getting better! I think it is too early to feel normal at this point. My PS told me it would be about 3 months for most people to feel close to normal. My chest area is swollen as well.
-
thanks Blessed. 3 months?? Wow, I don't know why I thought this would be no big deal!
-
Saw the PS today. No extension of the IV abx, so the PICC line comes out either Friday or Saturday (waiting on a call to find out for sure) - Yay! Gotta keep the drain in at least another week since it's consistently putting out 25-30 cc a day, plus it's a way to keep an eye out for the infection coming back w/o the abx. 8 weeks w/ a drain is no fun!
He says we're going to go slow on everything to make sure we don't have any problems. Sounds like I won't be starting fills anytime soon, so I might not have the exchange done by the end of December after all (I get to spend mo money, mo money!). That extra money will be coming from my car purchase fund, so I hope my car holds out another year, LOL!
He plans on lipo'ing under my arm to use for some fat grafting in the upper pole area. Doesn't that sound like fun??? Wonder if that's at the same time as exchange or if that's a revision sx?
Hope everyone is doing well!
-
Woo hoo, the last drain is finally gone! Original surgery was 7/30, so basically one drain was in for 2 months (except for the two days when the last one from the original surgery fell out 9/6). PICC line came out 9/17.
Hope everyone is doing well!
