We check my Tumor markers.CA-15.3 Every quarterly and it stays in the range of 13 to 18 since last 2 years and in march it was 16.8 and today it rose to 26.8 ( normal is below 31.2 ) though in normal range it has increased by 10 points in a quarter. .how significant is this ? Does it mean that cancer has returned ??plz guide

    I got this off Wikipedia:

Both CA27.29 and CA15-3 may be elevated in patients with benign ovarian cysts, benign breast disease, and benign liver disease. Elevations may also be seen in cirrhosis, sarcoidosis and lupus.

I thought I'd post it just to calm your nerves. What is your onc saying about it?

My markers normally range in the 30's.  However, it seems that every February they spike.  I have been really sick with the flu, chest infections, etc. both February's since ending treatment.  Feb 2013 was 40ish; Feb 2014 was over 50.  A pretty big spike from mid 30's in November.  My MO looks for patterns and repeat increases.  She doesn't consider anything under 50 worth mentioning to patient.  My May 2014 numbers went back down below 40.  I also have done better watching my carbs this spring--I didn't do so well this winter.  I did read that glucose levels can affect marker levels even in people with no history of cancer.

However, markers and their reliability vary from person to person.  Always ask MO if you have concerns.

Markers can go up for many reasons. Mine have gone from 8 up to 28 and back to 18. I'm on some treatments and I think that is why they are bouncing around.

Many, you are doing a good thing to monitor the markers. I can`t advise you but I'm sure the doctor will be proactive if there are any concerns.

Best to you and your wife.

I am sure they are going to do another test in a few weeks.  Although it seems like a bit of a jump compared to what it has been and what you have counted on, it is still not all that much and still in the normal range.  I understand your worry. I would be very worried also if it were me. I don't think they would do any tests or scans until it was in the not normal range. I hope that the next test brings you relief...

It may not be significant at all.  There are all sorts of non-cancer related issues than can cause a temporary spike.  A steady rise over a year's time would be concerning.

My primary freaked out over a temporary increase (still within normal levels) and it returned to my typical levels by the next test.

my onc told me it's not reliable and it often sets false alarms that cause patients unnecessary stress.

Agree with Juneping on this myself.  My onc said CA 27.29 is just "one" of many tools they use to check for recurrence.  But what's puzzling is that no one could tell me what influences those numbers, such as colds, flu, etc.  So my question next is if you don't know what causes the numbers to jump, why are we still using this?  But guess if bloodwork shows other levels to be 'normal' then they don't worry about the markers, unless way out of their normal range.

Being treated at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, one of the best in the nation - they have never mentioned tumor markers even once in over a year of visits.

Meg, no I never heard of them either until AFTER all treatment ended, and then I had to request them. Many oncs don't routinely do them.  I also thought it strange that they were never checked during treatment either, but probably because chemo affects everything so much.

Many oncs do not do tumor markers as they are not reliable for everyone a things Bessie cancer progression can cause them to rise. My mo has never used them.

My onc at MD Anderson also said the same thing. I requested for it and he said they can often be unreliable and cause anxiety.

we'll ,today we checked CA-15.3 again and it came -33 ( normal is below 31.3 ) so now it is a bit elevated over the normal limit .what does this signify ? Is this something to worry ? Our MO doesn't believe in Tumor marker and we have been doing this as told by our nathropath

Many - can you communicate your results with your MO?  Does your MO believe in scans?

Can your naturopath order a CA 27.29 tumor marker test?  I have both every 3 months...CA 13.9 and CA 27.29.

two points up is not really clinically significant, i think you may get more info from circulating tumour cell tests not tumor markers
