Can't sleep

Options

I was diagnosed with BC back in June.  I don't sleep well and end up relying on either Xanax or Ativan.  I always have to get up and go to the bathroom once or twice and I can't get back to sleep (if I am trying not to take Xanax or Ativan).  I'm tired of this.  I did call my MO and she wanted me to try melatonin or Benadryl or both together.  I have tried melatonin 3 different times it does nothing neither does Benadryl.  The nurse also told me I could take the two together and that didn't work either.  MO didn't want to prescribe anything yet since I am already on lexapro which I just started not too long ago.  Help.  I hate this stupid disease.

Thanks for any suggestions

Nancy

I'm having the same issues with sleep as well. I hate taking medication to help me sleep but sometimes I just have to because I feel exhausted from not sleeping.  Melatonin does nothing and I'm taking tamoxifen so I can't take Benadryl. Hope you get some relief soon.

I hate taking it too.  I'm already doing chemo and the Ativan.  Ugh enough drugs already

I took Ambien all through treatment. It was wonderful because I probably would have dropped dead from lack of sleep without it. I could fall asleep, when I woke up to go to the bathroom, I would fall back to sleep, and I woke up rested. My advice would be that if non-prescription remedies aren't working; TELL them you need something stronger!

I think my onco doesn't want to prescribe it though because I am on lexapro.

This is what Livestrong.com says about Ambien and Lexapro....might be worth asking about.

"Lexapro--used to treat depression and anxiety--can cause sleeplessness. Ambien--a sleep aid--can cause depression. While all drugs have side effects, the severity varies with the dose and the individual. Patients using Ambien with Lexapro discuss extreme problems from the combination on Internet sites without thorough validation by medical experts. No Ambien-Lexapro contraindications are reported by the FDA."

I know of a BC lady about the same place in treatment also doing AC+ T and kaiser gave her ambien.  She also takes lexapro.  Maybe I will ask.  So tired of being awake and thinking about BC.  I do enough of that during the day and would really like to turn it off at night

It kept me from going totally insane!! I had tried all the dark room/white noise/melatonin tricks, and it is just lucky that I did not have a gun in the house, or I would have blasted that damn relaxation CD into a million pieces!

Nancy, you need to have a long talk with you onc.  Lexapro is an antidepressant in the selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor class.  It can make people sleepy OR sleepless, and it's usually a transient symptom, until your body gets accustomed to it.  Unless it's making YOU particularly sleepy or fatigued, there's no reason to NOT prescribe a sleep medication such as Ambien.

The first weeks, months, or years after a diagnosis of breast cancer can be an ocean of fear, anxiety, sleeplessness.  There's no hell like spending night after night awake and afraid.  Like Ruthbru, I took Ambien when I needed it all through treatment.

Sleep is not a luxury, it's as vital as oxygen.  If your onc won't help you, change doctors.

The only OTC that work for me are multiple UNISOM Gels. I have ativan (lorazepam) if I need something else.My onc at Dana Farber said I COULD take them with Tamoxifen even though they were on the list of interactions. He only plans to keep me on tamox for 2 years though, then switch to AI. Also my oncotype dx was a low number. He said I would know it is working if I get side effects. If I get none then I guess we will rethink it at my next appt. Lol

If you are talking about the SEs of anti-hormonals......whether or not you 'get SEs' has nothing to do with them working or not! It's like having morning sickness, or not, when you're pregnant....neither has anything to do with how healthy the baby will be. Be happy if you DON'T have bad SEs!!!!

I keep trying to not take my ativan at night.  My onc says, "why?". Sleep is important and if that's what helps then take it.  She said not to worry about getting addicted,  that I will get to a point where I dont need it anymore.  So - go ahead and take it!  This is NOT easy.

I try to "hold it" during the night because I know if I get up I'll be awake for at least an hour. When I was taking 75 mg of Effexor I slept like a baby and had the most interesting dreams. Now that I have dropped down to half that the insomnia is back and the vivid dreams are mostly gone. I try to sit in the hot tub before bed. Something about raising my core temp makes me sleep better.

i was recently prescribed Effexor (venlafaxine hcl) 37.5 mg for hot flashes and after taking felt awful, tired, groggy, and not myself at all.    I was also prescribed  trazodone to help with sleep.  One night it worked and I got a good nights rest but now it does not seem to help at all.

Anyone else with side effects like  this with Effexor?  I hate taking it and understand it may take a while for my body to get used to it.  I need to be more alert to drive or go anywhere and this stuff makes me want to doze off and I have no energy.

Patti, my onc prescribed Effexor a few years ago.  I had the same side effects as you--sleepy, tired, groggy.  I only took one and threw the rest away.  I switched to Paxil (paroxetine) and it worked fine.  Hot flashes under control.

Going off of hormones made sleep difficult. I now use a combination of the following & it works pretty well: benadryl (25 mg), prolonged-release melatonin (3 mg), Kavinace Ultra PM (contains 3 mg melatonin plus some herbal stuff; unfortunately it's quite expensive). I was told that its safe to take up to 9 mg of melatonin. GNC has a lot of sleep remedies with various natural ingredients that you might try. I've also been helped by 4-7-8 breathing.

I don't know if it is safe or not with any cancer drugs but I read an article recently saying that people use magnesium in place of Xanex and I have tried it and it does seem to help.

GLou, what's 4-7-8 breathing?  Yoga relaxation breathing?
