Can we have a forum for "older" people with bc?

If you Google a Map of Ketchikan, Alaska ....it shows 4 ships.....the last few years we have docked at the farthest dock to the left on this map.....and used the the walkway along where the small boat marina is located to get into the town and Creekside.....great museum there too!

BTW is anyone an animal lover here---raise u'r hand. We're all alike---our furbabies own us completely. But zi love it.

AA do u know exactly where the girls are talking about. if u can meet them? Is it far for u or nearby.
I hope it can all come together--I remember when this trip was planned it seemed so long ago, now it's about here. How exciting.

Peggy the giant golden and I did sleep well, Cami, until the storm had me hopping out of bed to lower the plastic window things on our screen porch.  The lightening and thunder woke me just before the downpour began.  Or maybe Peggy woke me to alert me.  Fur baby is the perfect description.  Night all.

Cammi, Lilhoney..... WHAT are you eating?  We have to figure this out....  I'll be your Doctor.....  Did you switch times for taking your medication?  Or did you have some combination of foods or "drink" that interferred with the natural absorption of your Amino Acids or something?    ( I just felt so smart there for a minute!)  

Usually getting the big D is from something you in-advertantly did or consumed.....  (I can't help it.)   So figure out what it was that caused this significant shift in your digestive system, and correct "it."   

So take something like ImmodiumAD or eat a box of Saltine Crackers.  Then call me in the morning.

We're having an overcast day so far.  DH and I slept in until 8:30.  Lazy bums!

DH and I were in Ketchican for a few days in 2011 when we did our big Alaska rv trip.  Wish I'd known Alaska Angel was there.  It would have been fun to connect.  The amusing thing about most of the touristy shops is that they don't even open when the cruise ships aren't in!  And so many of the jewelry shops in the towns along the Inland Passage are owned by the cruise ship lines.  The prices are jacked up sky high so that 75 percent sale price is about what the items should cost. 

With all that said, we bought a couple of nice carvings in one of the shops and probably paid far too much.

Hi Carole, I would have enjoyed meeting you too. My husband and I have seen a lot here over the years. The town was originally mostly a fishing town with mining in the area, and then in the 1950's became a timber town as well, and was on its way to becoming a mining town too. Timber mostly shut down over a decade ago. Mining has been mostly nonexistent for decades but there is more interest in it now that the prices are up. Canada is busy developing nearby mines at the border near us, with tailings that may affect the fisheries on our side. But mostly the town has been limping by on tourism. We don't happen to be part of the tourism trade ourselves. One nice aspect is that relatively unknown artists with talent sometimes are selling their stuff here for a bit less, but most of it costs more. (But then, a Costco jar of nuts sells here at our local grocery store for over $20 -- the cost of living is higher here). What is kind of creepy to us is what you mentioned -- so many tourists are encouraged to buy jewelry here that is not Alaskan for the most part -- and a good number of the shops here are closed all winter and are related to the cruise ship industry, where they used to be just local mom-and-pop family stores.

We used to get a half dozen ships stopping here in a week, and they had no more than 1,000 crew and passengers each, but now 3 to 6 ships stop here on most days, and they carry a crew and passengers of 3,000 or more each. It is still a wonderful vacation to take, to be able to relax and see long stretches of wilderness between towns while having all the comforts and recreation on the ships, with no need to "do the driving"!

Cammi, that is awful....!  I don't know what chemo you had? I did CAFx6 and didn't realize back in 2002 that the antibiotic in it wiped out the natural flora/fauna. Nothing worked right for me until a little over a year ago I started eating organic yoghurt on a regular basis with all the organisms in it. We do such a number on our microbiome with some treatments and no one clues us in about how to deal with it afterward. It is like, YEA, you're done, we did a great job together, so long, next patient...

WELCOME Lola -- I am sorry to hear that you had to fight the beast a second time after 8 yrs..  I'm glad you found us though.  This blog ( BC. Org was here 8 yrs. ago, but you didn't mention if you were here then.  It doesn't matter -- just nice to have you now.  We are a small group so not easy to get lost here and we truly enjoy being a part of each others lives.  I hope you will come back a lot.  The door is always open and the coffee pot on. 

Well gals -- it is hot and humid here today.  We took Baby Boss to the beauty shop today.  He will get a GOOD hair-cut and the next few days which will be a reapeat of this one won't bother him neqar as much. 

I'm not liking this, but at least this really hot, muggy stuff held off for Balloon Fest.  The rain wasn't so great then either, but at least we did not have the awful heat.

I'll be roaming around here a little later.  See you then.

Lola, we're so glad you found us but sorry about this turn of events in your life. 37 weeks of chemo!!! That has to be some kind of record. You poor baby. Please know you can share anything here and it doesn't have to be happy and positive. Sometimes we just need support. We try to do that here with humor, empathy, and sharing our stories about our daily lives.

Mimi, love that your Golden is names Peggy. We always name our dogs and cats "people" names. Our first dog was a Golden Retriever named Alex who lived to be 12 which is ancient for big dogs. He is dearly missed.

Di, the pugs all lined up is so funny! Do they always sleep close together? One of my Facebook groups is a senior dog rescue place and they have two elderly pugs who are both blind. They sleep right next to one another and have blended in quickly with the other dogs in the pack.

AlaskaAngel, since you and Di are the experts (this will be my first time in Ketchikan) I'll meet you where you decide. My husband and I are not shoppers. We'll spend the first 3 hours in port on a private tour designed for us. I sent them a list of what we were interested in. Ha-ha, I told them I wanted to find a picture-perfect natural wild salmon run with a bear fishing for his lunch and an eagle in a nearby tree. Not so interested in hatcheries. We like nature in it's purist form. I also want to see totem carvers. Is Saxman Village the best place to do that? The only other thing on our agenda that day is to have a look inside Dolly's House so we can complete our tour of brothels, which started in Chicago a few months ago. (Looking for a photo of Chevy and Cammi on the walls, LOL.) We are on the Golden Princess and will not have to tender in, but will actually dock at a pier around 6 a.m. My tour is 7 to 10 a.m. and we leave at 12:30. Di, what are your plans for that day?
