New lump, which doctor do I call?

edited August 2014 in Not Diagnosed With a Recurrence or Metastases but Concerned

I am five years out and found a new lump two weeks ago.  It is small and hopefully nothing, but want to make sure.  I haven't dealt with this before and am wondering who to call...my general practitioner, my gynecologist, my surgeon, radiation onc, or medical onc?  I've never had so many doctors and never know who to call for what?  Thanks for any feedback!

    This happened to me. I suggest you call your breast surgeon as you will be directed there for a biopsy anyways. ( I went to my MO, who ordered an ultrasound, and then was ULTIMATELY sent to BS.) this lump was benign by the way.

    Hi Margodae, I am about 19 months out from Mx and I found a lump a few weeks ago. I was fortunate that I had an appointment with my surgeon a few days later, for my usual 6 monthly check, he organized an ultrasound and stereotactic biopsy which I had the following week. Mine turned out to be a cyst that resolved as soon as the gun hit it. I got the final path on Friday to say nothing malignant was found. 

    I know this fear feels like a punch to the stomach! 

    I wish the same B9 result for you!

    Ariom, was your lump on the mx breast or the natural breast?  From your signature block looks like your left breast might be natural. If it was on your mx breast was it near the original tumor? What did you lump feel like, was hit hard?  Thank you, Jill

    Hi Jill, the lump was on the Mx side, just below the incision line, toward the center of my chest. I actually found it by accident, after hurting myself on that side. I was massaging the bruising and found this moveable, smooth lump. It was like a pea size and hard, but very mobile. It was in an area where there wasn't really much flesh, so it was right on top of the bone on my chest.

    My surgeon said i felt B9 to him, but of course he couldn't be sure and the radiographer said the same, but interestingly, neither of them thought it was a cyst.

    I hope you can get an answer soon, it isn't pleasant going back to that scary place while you wait again for answers. I wish you all the very best, let us know how you get on.

    Ariom, thank for sharing details about your lump, I find your doctors action to treat the lump serious very encouraging. Thank God it was B9! I have my regular PS appt in 2 days, good timing like you had, if he isn't 100% sure it's fat or other B9 lump, I will move up my annual BS appt, it's now on sept 3. Outside my cancer side armpit it's swollen that prompted me to feel the tissue better and I feel 2 non smooth lumps about 4 cm total right next to each other could be connected, and located 1.5 inches above the original tumor spot. I am 15 months out from fat grafting and have had no trama to the area. Not saying a word to anyone until I get my PS opinion.  I will keep you posted.

    margodae, do you still see all those doctors?  Three years after I was done I was only seeing my MO, so that's where I called.  If you're still seeing them all, the surgeon would be the one.

    If you're only seeing your primary care doc, I'd call there.  At least they consider lumps to be an emergency and will get you in speedily.

    pajim...yes, I have been seeing each doctor once a year.  The plan is if I remain cancer free, after five years, I will no longer see my radiation oncologist or surgeon.  I will continue with my medical oncologist, once a year, as I plan to stay on Tamoxifen for another 5 years.
