Had lumpectomy and SNB biopsy yesterday, now waiting results.

I was diagnosed with BC earlier this month. The initial biopsy report said:

-invasive ductal carcinoma, grade 1 of 3, 0.9 CM current specimen

-DCIS, intermediate nuclear grade without necrosis

-ER positive, PR negative and HER-2/neu negative by immunohistochemical stain

Yesterday I had a lumpectomy and SNB (right). Now it's the waiting on the pathology to see where we go from here. The BS, Oncologist and Radiation Oncologist all say that as long as nothing changes and there is no lymph node involvement I should be able to do the internal radiation and then taking a pill after that.

I guess I'm just worried its not going to be that easy, but I guess that's normal.

Waiting is the hardest part, I think.  We will wait with you and encourage you along the way!

Thank you.  I go to the BS on Monday 8/4/14 for my follow up appt and pathology results. As it gets closer I'm getting more scared.

Well, grade 1 is really good.

0.9 cm is nice and small.
    Her- is really good.

    The er+ is good.
The pr- is a little tricky. They don't really know what it means, but it is sometimes associated with problems.

Good luck - I suspect that if your nodes are negative, you are in pretty darned good shape

So while on the way to my follow up appt with BS today his office calls to tell me they haven't gotten the pathology report yet and need to cancel my appt.  They said that they will call me when it's in and re-schedule. Really?  I haven't been able to sleep the past two nights worrying about what the results were going to be and now I have to wait longer.  Of course in the back of my mind I am scared this means there is something wrong.  Feeling very frustrated!

dhustedde- I agree with you. The waiting is so difficult.

I asked my surgeon to call me when he got the pathology report. I assured him that I could handle any information he gave me on the phone.  If it was good news, I would be relieved and could focus on healing as I waited for the follow-up appointment. If it was bad news, I could have time to process the information and then ask better, more informed questions at the follow-up appointment. I saw it as good for me and the surgeon. (I'm sure a less emotional, more informed patient would make his work easier)

If it would be helpful to you, maybe your surgeon would consider doing the same?

dhustedde, I am so sorry to hear that you've had a delay thrown into the mix. I can imagine how that has made you feel. I will never understand how these Doctors don't get, how soul destroying this waiting is, for us.

Please don't read anything sinister into this, it can be as simple as a staff member being away, or simply an overload of work that can't be processed in time.

I wish you all the very best and hope you get your results soon! Hugs x.

Thank you PoppyK.  My surgeon was upset the pathologist didn't have the results and asked them to put a rush on it.  His office staff said they will call and get me in as soon as they get the report in.

Thanks Ariom!  I'm trying to not read anything into the delay but its hard sometimes. I seem to have such bad luck that I tend to feel like its not going to be good. I know that's crazy and in the scheme of things I'm very lucky.

So a couple days ago I got my pathology report. Good news, bad news.  It didn't spread to the lymph nodes, but there is a small area that doesn't have clear margins. I go in Monday for the re-excision. Now my BS feels like there may not be enough space left after this second surgery to do the internal radiation.  He said we'll see when he's done and how the pathology comes back but it may have to be the full breast radiation. That's a little disappointing but seeing as the lymph nodes are not envolved I'm extremely happy!  Just more surgery and waiting on another pathology report.  Ugh!

    dhustedde,

I am so happy that your nodes are negative! That is wonderful news!

More surgery and waiting for results... so challenging! I understand your disappointment with the possibility of not being eligible for internal radiation. But, as you said, no node involvement is fantastic.

Wishing you clean margins and a fast recovery!

Hi dhustedde! I am so pleased to hear there was no node involvement!

Sorry to hear you've got to go back for clean margins and your plan may change for the Rads. It will be done soon! I wish you all the very best for a really speedy recovery! M x
