thyroid update`all good news!!!!
hI
Had the thyroid surgery on Thursday--feeling pretty good--- surgeon did a great job. I actually feel great--I think that diseased thyroid had really brought me down over the past 6 months. When I woke up from surgery, surgeon was there and she was beaming--nothing in the one lymph node that we were watching--had not left the thyroid-still completely curable. It was a great day..... Came home the next day and really have just felt better and better.... my voice for the first time in months is not hoarse. So, while I was deeply unhappy at this incidental finding on my lung ct, I am so very grateful that this was found and removed and that I seem to be recovering well.
As many of you know, it is such a pain to have to always follow up on things. My cousin who is a doc, said two things to me last week that I think I will make my mantra. the first "the only mistake you can ever make is to not follow up" and "you are an intelligent, healthy person who is managing her health".
I think he is right......

I'm not only relieved to hear that your cancer was contained as expected, but thrilled to hear that you're feeling stronger each day and especially that your voice is better than before surgery!

Thanks all---even more good news--path report back--- very small (smaller than measured on ultrasound)... all negative lymph nodes, no evidence of movement out side the thyroid--surgeon declared it "excellent path report and very curable" this has made my day..... feel so good about all of this-- and feeling very good post-surgery--- will have post-op next week and make plan for iodine treatment.... then, according to her, "that should be it".... she was very upbeat and encouraging about this... has been from the beginning. I feel very fortunate today--- reminds me that "always follow up" is the mantra.......

Glad to hear you are doing well. I am almost 8 yrs out of stage 1 IDC. My nodule was discovered about 10 yrs ago. It was stable and tested benign on fine needle biopsies, but it has grown in the past year. I am seeing surgeon on Aug 8th and since my throat area was radiated as a child, I feel sure my BC and potential Thyroid cancer were caused by this. I am having a lot of anxiety. Any advice?
-
hi
Totally understand the anxiety. Of you see my earlier posts you can hear my anxiety. I was so upset about this. However, literally EVERYONE from my pcp, radiologist, surgeon , nurses and many people here reassured me that thyroid cancer is completely curable. I have several colleagues who had this as well and they were also very reassuring.
So, hopefully it won't be necessary, but let me reassure you. If, by some small chance, this is not benign, know that the surgery is not difficult and the recovery is not hard. And it is far less scary than BC. Again, this is easy to say because I had a pretty straightforward case.
But let's assume you are benign. In the meantime, ask your doc for Ativan for the anxiety. If you have any questions feel free to ask and send me a private message there a quite a few people here who have had both and they were very helpful to me
Hang in there

Thanks for the reply. Of course I have been researching and assuming worst case scenario since I have all the risk factors and my nodule grew fast. I read about that aplastic thyroid cancer and it is fatal and untreatable. At least the ultrasound report said no cervical nodes.

Hi
I know it is easy to assume the worst--but the fact is, most are papillary/follicular--sooooo common and very likely for you if indeed it is something at all (which it very well may not be).
I will be away next week but please let us know how it turns out (benigh!!!)

Thank you. I saw the surgeon Thursday and partial thyroidectomy is scheduled for Aug 18th. He said super small chance it is cancerous since all my PET scans and FNA's were benign for thyroid.
-
great news. So they are going ahead with a partial?? That is what my sis did (ultimately benign). Hoping the very same for you!
