lump removal
hi, I've recently had a biopsy, got a phone call that the results were benign, but my doctor isn't satisfied with the samples she retrieved she had a difficult time penetrating the mass. She highly recommended a lumpectomy to do further testing. Also said she didn't like what she was seeing ultrasound wise. Is this normal?

I think so. She's saying the results of the biopsy don't correlate with the appearance of the imaging. The exact same thing happened to me, and I had the lump (and several others) surgically removed.
My second set of results was also benign, and I hope yours will be as well. Good luck

Thanks for replying
I am lucky to have a doctor that is so adamant on making sure to get the right answers and not brush anything off
-
Yes - same happened to me too.
All the tests i.e. imaging, ultrasound and biopsy have to make sense together. The only way to get a conclusive answer if there is any doubt is to get the whole lump out and looked at in it's entirety. xx

Ok, that makes sense to me Janet456, someone told me they wouldn't do a lumpectomy without knowing what the lump was bc if it was cancerous it would cause the cancer to spread. That didn't seem right to me.

It is better to have a doctor who is cautious
and wants to know for sure that it is all benign before saying "all
clear", than one who offhand says "it'll be OK". Try not to get
yourself in a stressed state by reading too much of what Dr Google has to say
in the many dubious sources on the Internet. We all hope it is nothing to worry about, but
you're lucky to have a doctor who wants to be sure. If the evidence has conflicts then it is better to be proactive. We wish you the best benign results. The Mods

trying not to stress! Easier said than done 😔 I'm not 100% on what a lumpectomy is, other than removing the lump, I figure there's a little more to it...
-
I too had something similar. The Mammogram and ultrasound showed 'something' but the ultrasound guided biopsy came back b9--surgeon called it discordant and so I had an excisional biopsy. Unfortunately the results were cancer. Hope your results stay b9!
-
the pathology report called it dense stromal fibrosis. Which my doctor is not agreeing with, so that's why she is recommending further testing...I hope the findings stay benign 😃

Penquinlover1984 I am in the same place you are. 8/14 I had a breast MRI and a mass 5mm x 2.5 cm was found. Next day 8/15 an ultrasound and core needle biopsy w 4 tissue samples...DX: papillomas, b9. Referred to surgeon who will do a lumpectomy after my consult w/PS. I had intraductal papillomas excised 11/89 w/reconstruction. The radiologist told me the path does not correlate w/mri & sonogram. Radiologist discussion with surgeon request lumpectomy done with wide margins. Waiting to see PS tomorrow 11/15, hope to get surgery date.
Hope your results stay B9

Dear Moma9, welcome to BCO Forums.
We hope you have better news from your PS and decide what you need done.
It can be difficult with mixed results. All our best

Saw a PS on Monday and my BS today. I have a surgery date of 9/25/14. Don't know for certain what all will be done on day of surgery. BS & PS said the mass looks close to the cupsule around my implant and if it or the implant are damaged then they will have to remove the implant. If my DX remains B9 and there is no damage I will be done. If damage occurs or if the DX changes, then I will need surgery to either reconstruct my breast or to do a BLM on the left breast and TE will be put in place. I will then do radiation before the reconstruction will be done on both breast. Found out if there is cancer they cannot do a nipple sparing masectomy since the mass is in the milk duct. Will update as soon as the biopsy results are back.
