Hi Everyone,

I recently posted to say that I was waiting for results.  I received the senitel node results, and thank the Lord it hasn't spread.  I felt like I had just about beat Cancer at that point...but I know I still have a huge mountain to climb.

I have some questions please.  I was diagnosed on 15 July.  Had my sentinel node on 18 July, it hasn't spread.  I was supposed to have my double Mastectomy this Thursday 7 August..... but can you believe it last Friday, 1 August,  I suddenly got very ill with a very sore pain under my ribs by the healthy breast....I caught a touch of pneumonia!  Apparently I probably caught it from going under anesthetic when I removed my sentinel node!  After spending the weekend in hospital I am finally home...but been told to be very careful and to finish my course of antibiotics.  As expected my surgery this Thursday is not going to happen....I have to wait until the end of August to ensure that I am well enough....which I understand.

My question is, how long can you wait?  How long did you all have from being diagnosed to having your mastectomy?  My cancer is a grade 1 and under 1.9cm....but apparently it hasn't grown much since last year when it was supposedly a "cyst" but now the shape has become irregular.

Regards

Amber

Amber, I didn't have a MX- I had a lumpectomy so can't respond to that but for me it was about a month from Dx to surgery. Don't worry about the time frame. You need to recover from pneumonia first. Your drs won't risk an infection and they shouldn't. I know you are anxious but try and focus on recovery. Maybe you could call and talk to your doctor or his nurse. Good luck!

I'm no doctor, and I don't even play one on TV, but I'm going to guess that it's much more important for you to clear up respiratory problems before put under again (especially knowing that might be what caused them in the first place), than to have the surgery.  We all know anesthesiology is one of the most dangerous aspects of surgery.  I had a 1.8 tumor and a second, smaller one.  I know my surgeon mentioned they like to do surgery a certain amount of time after diagnosis, but I think that was a number she pulled out of the air because there is so much to take into consideration.  My finding was first noticed in February.  I came back in April for another check because they weren't sure.  My surgery was in May.  I think it was about a month or so after diagnosis.  But you'll find another poster on here right now who is pregnant, so she can't have surgery until she delivers.  You can also find posts that speak to some scientific estimates about how long our cancers have been in us and growing already. Answer for most of us = a long time.  Years.  Of course, that varies.  So take care of those lungs, then get on with it.

    Best to you.

I had L mast, and the waiting seemed like forever,I had 3 months of chemo before the mast, so it was about 3 months before I got the surgery, and then 3 ,onths after the surgery, the docs know best, and (Praise GOD) I am now a 20yr SURVIVOR, so hang in there, and we are here for you. msphil(idc,stage2, 3 nodes, L mast, chemo and rads and 5 yrs on tamoxifen)
