radiation question
Hello sisters, I was diagnosed on June with invasive ducal carcinoma surrounded by dcis. This was found by a micro cluster on my mammo. Then had a stereotactic which showed cancer. I then had a lumpectomy and sentinel biopsy done. I was told that both the lumpectomy and biopsy thank god showed no cancer. I was told that the stereotactic biopsy removed it all. Has anyone ever heard of this? Stereotactic showed 0.5 cm, er and pr positive, her negative, no node involvement, stage t 1 a. Was told I still need radiation and tamoxifen. I am 45 mom of two young children. I suffer greatly with panic and anxiety, especially after all this. I met with radiation oncologist. She insists that I must do radiation. I am extremely nervous about it. Can anyone help me through this. I appreciate any advice. God bless you all and thank you in advance.

Hi nyleelee68! I'm sure that someone will come along and have more info on your exact situation but let me reassure you about the radiation. I have to do 28 sessions. So far,I've completed 19. Radiation is doable. It's not a walk in the park but it's not horrendous either. So far, my biggest complaint is the fatigue (you will have to take naps). As far as pain, the worst that I've felt is like a bad sunburn. I have felt nothing during the actual zapping time (the sunburn feeling comes after I'm off of the table). You do have to go everyday but you get into the routine. But, to ease your worries, try reading the summer rads board or zome other ones. I know that this is really hard! If you need anything, I'm here. Good luck

Hi nyleelee, I had 4 wks. of radiation. Check and see if you can have the Canadian Protocol (4 weeks). It's been used in Canada and Europe for years and it's supposed to be just as effective as the old 5-6wk. regimen. Biggest side effect from radiation has been fatigue. I didn't have a lot of skin problems during treatment, just one area under my breast got a burn. Didn't have an overall sunburn or anything major. Just set your priorities and don't do anything extra for awhile. Ask for help when you need it. That can be an adjustment, but save your energy for things that have to be done. My house and yard have been a mess, there's dust everywhere and it drives me buggy, but it's not the end of the world. I don't nap, but I do lay or sit down after doing a task. I'd rather have radiation than go to the dentist. :-) Good luck and try to relax.
