Apologies if this is a repeat, but I'm new to the site and there is soooo much to read.  I'm about to have my last round of Cytoxan (& Taxotere) and my eyes have been nearly constantly watering for weeks now.  Is there any home remedy or solution that anyone has found helpful?  I am already on zyrtec (allergy med) twice a day for joint pain, benadryl doesn't help and I have just started using Similasan a natural Allergy Eye Relief drop...any suggestions are more than welcome!  Thanks!

That is one of the side effects of Taxotere which are also known as "Taxo-tears".  I had 6 roundsof Cytoxan/Taxotere and recall having the watery eyes for a while after I had finished chemo.   The watery eyes episodes lessened over time.   I don't think I took any OTC meds or used eye drops to help with those teary eyes.  In fact, sometimes, I had the opposite problem at times with dry eyes.  For that, I had some OTC eye lubricant (GenTeal) that I bought at Walgreens.

Congrats on your final chemo coming up!!!!

I had the same thing a few months after my last round of CT. It wasn't allergies, it was lacrimal duct stenosis, a known side-effect of Cytoxan. I saw an ophthalmologist and he used a very thin metal probe to see if my tear ducts were completely blocked. They were very very narrow and he suggested seing a surgeon, BUT, the very act of probing them seemed to *open* them up again a week or so later. I guess I was lucky as some have surgery to unblock them. I feel for you. The skin around my eyes was raw and peeling from the constant tears. Couldn't wear makeup. Hard to focus. Not fun. Make an appointment with an opth and get it checked out. I also got some eye drops which helped some. Good luck!

During chemo my eye ran a lot and I was told to use 'OTC moisturizing drops'  (visine/murine/etc.) and they did help.  I have found OTC drops that seem to be much better, Thanks to my eye surgeon.   He gave me a sample of Refresh Optive to use after my first detached retina almost a year ago.

My nose also woud, at times, just pour clear liquid as if a spigot had been turned on.  If I remember correctly, Imwas told that chemo will cause drying of tissues amd whemn that drymess hits a certain point - the body will take over and do excessive fluid to the area to compensate for the dryness.

Thank you so much for the advice, it's ridiculous how much fluid comes from my eyes every day and yes, it's hard to focus, hard to see and make up is a challenge which doesn't help my existing appearance!  I will try all of the suggestions - thank you so much!

I have my 3rd round of TC on 7/29. Just a couple days ago my eyes started watering and nose was running but today it is somewhat better. Doctor told me it had to do with chemo drying out the body and the body compensating for it.  I have some OTC eye drops which seem to help a bit. They told me not to bother taking allergy meds as it wouldn't really help. Good Luck!

I had the same issue on FECD it is a miserable side effect to put it mildly, I used refresh tears WITH OUT the preservatives doctor said initially I can use it every 2hours or so to relieve the dryness, it worked I got better after about a month I am 12 weeks PFC now and much happier now that my eyes are not agonizing me anymore, I mean come on the rest of the side effects is a handful as it is.

This side effect is actually the result of dry eyes - which seems counterintuitive since the eyes are watery.  Lubricating eye drops, not the kind that have vasoconstrictors (that get the red out), are what you need.  However, it may not be a bad idea to have an eye doc check for the stenosis or scarring in the tear duct, it is not as common for that to be a problem but can definitely happen.  I found that it took about 6-8 weeks after my last Taxotere for the spontaneous tearing to stop, but it finally did.

latisecannon - I am well beyond the Taxo-tears, that is how I know it does go away!  Try a lubricating drop - they feel a bit weird at first, but ultimately are soothing.  I also would lay with my eyes closed and put a cool washcloth over my eyes.  I seemed to notice the worst watering when I kept my eyes open longer - like when watching TV, driving, or looking at the computer screen.  Also, maybe try closing your eyes for a few moments when you are doing those things - well, maybe not when driving, lol!  Are you getting Herceptin?  If so, you may have the watering eyes a bit longer.

I have watery eyes again after taking Taxotere for the second time.  The first time I made an appointment with a specialist for eyes-(and out of network) who only came to our town once a month.  By the time I saw him I had already discontinued taxotere and my tear ducts were upplugged.  It passes when you are done with the chemo. Taxotere is shrinking my tumors once again!
