Orlando Chemo ladies?

get some dry ice from publix, smash it in ziplock bags and put it in a cooler. Don't seal the ziplock bags tho. It will keep Popsicles frozen for a couple days. That what cool caps use to keep them cold. Like forty below zero cold!
-
I started another thread to keep all the planning for the get together in one place here's the link:
-
Publix has dry ice??
-
not all but lots do. Usually by the door. My brother told me...he used it to keep fish fresh on the drive home from the keys

Hello Orlando ladies! I'm so very lucky not to need chemo, but came across this thread with Orlando in the title so I wanted to say hi. HomeMom, Dr. Shroff is also my oncologist and I love her. I've known her for several years, as both our oldest son (lymphoma) and my husband (hematology) also see her. Who is your breast surgeon? Dr. Danelle Chambers did both my surgeries and I really liked her as well.
I really need to get off my lazy butt and start exercising, but it seems there's always something going on that makes me put it off. My husband is having surgery next week and I'm not sure what his recovery time will be. I need to get serious once we get through that. We're signed up to do the Susan G. Komen walk/race at UCF in October, so I need to at least start walking again soon!
-
Hi ucfmom. Another Orlando gal here. I don't know if you read the other threads: under get togethers: Orlando babes and Orlando (and nearby cities) get together, we, (well to be honest I seem to be the more interested on) would like to do a get together sometime in September. Also as for exercising livestrong.org has a 12 week free program for cancer patients at the Orlando and Winter Park YMCA's their telephone number is 407 644 3606 in case you are interested. Your husband and son could also participate. If you could please post any information regarding the Susan G. Komen walk I would appreciate it, I live relatively close to UCF. Hope your husband does well in his surgery and has a speedy recovery. (((hugs))) and wishes for well being for you and your loved ones.
-
UCF mom- me too, if I don't start exercising this body I am going to turn into a bigger blob! I just saw OH has a wellness center open to patients, too. I live very close to the downtown YMCA....I just have to get my lazy butt over to one of those places.
BTW, I was on Channel 2 news yesterday during there spot on medical marijuana. Nothing like seeing yourself on TV to see how much you need to be excersizing!!
-
Hi UCFmom - I am so happy for you, this chemo thing really really sucks. Manalli (sp) Dr. Shroff's PA told me that I'm just getting it for insurance....I hope it it's worth it. I had Dr. Kemp as my BS. She was so upbeat and did a great job. My Gyno in Clermont recommended her.
I would like to know about the walk as well, I should be almost done if not done with rads by then. We have talked here before, my son graduated from UCF almost two years ago. He is going for his master's now from there. He was the only kid with a go pro camera on his head during graduation... I'm SO proud!
-
ladies. Thanks for the tip! I am signed up at the Y downtown. What a nice program! Free classes and free access to the entire Y during the 12 weeks!

Interesting chart on nutrition''
-
Homemom,
never noticed your avatar. I have the poster and used it in my signature line at work during treatments.
What do they say about great minds think alike?
-
lbrewer - I really wish my MO's office had a nutritionist to help with diet during and after chemo. I find myself eating whatever looks like I could taste it and not following the diet I used to consume.
I just added that avatar, I have a coffee mug with that on it and always liked it!
-
Lol what a coincidence! My daughter has the same picture in a fridge magnet! She bought in New Orleans at the Museum for WWII. (I live with my daughter so I see that magnet all the time). HomeMom even though it's been 4 years since chemo I still remember not having taste buds at the time so I too ate anything I could feel the taste for. No that I'm stage IV and with my daughter's prodding, I am eating better, I don't eat diary products and eat mostly vegetarian (except for the occasional Mexican food from time to time) I would say eat what you can and don't worry about diet right now, at least until you recover from chemo.

Here's the link to the race (or walk in my case!).
http://www.komencentralflorida.org/komen-race-for-...
My good friend is a runner, so my husband and I won't be trying to keep up with her.
HomeMom, my husband had an appointment with Dr. Shroff this morning, I'd forgotten about that. My friend the runner also went to Dr. Shroff and Dr. Kemp.
Jbokland, I missed your spot on the news, but I did see a clip you posted not too long ago. When we were in Key West in May there was supposed to be a march for medical marijuana, but not enough people showed up so they just ended up holding signs on the corner. We stopped by but I was just about 6 weeks or so post surgery and didn't have enough energy to attempt to walk too far in the heat. Anyway, a friend of mine who was also in town at the time is a fellow breast cancer survivor - we were called "boobies for doobies"; too bad we didn't have time to have shirts made. lol
Aurora, you must live pretty close to me - I'm on Econ between Lake Underhill and Curry Ford.
lbrewer, thanks for the link, I'm going to check out that article.
-
UCFmom Yes! We're very close. I live on Valencia College off Econ. Question, can I join the race/walk on my wheelchair? I do walk with a cane but I wouldn't be able to get very far walking. I hope I'm not being too pushy but if you would like maybe we could meet? Any way, just knowing someone nearby is on the same path helps. I don't work, I went on disability after my surgery due to cancer and I have lots of time in my hands but you might not so it's up to you.
Take care
Aurora

Dr. Kemp's office is so upbeat. When I went in for my biopsy results, she said "I want you to listen with both ears open" Told me it was "good guy cancer". I'm like...isn't' that an oxymoron??
So it's a real family affair for you. They are awesome people, very thorough. I promised myself I'd be thorough from here on out.
I clicked on the link, is there a place you go separately for the walk as opposed to the run? I won't be running! I want to get some other people to do it too.
-
Aurora, I would love to meet up with you! I do work but I'm sure we can figure out a time to get together once my husband gets through his surgery and is on the mend. I'm taking off most of Monday and all of Tuesday to be with him and it's all unpaid time for me as I used all my sick and vacation when I was out for my own surgery in March. He was my lifesaver during that time and he was able to work from home the entire time I was out. I wish I had that flexibility as well! I can't imagine it would be a problem for you to use your wheelchair in the walk.
HomeMom, you should see different options on the registration form. I know I signed up as a walker, not a runner! Also make sure you check off that you're a survivor because that gets us into the VIP tent. I've done the walk at Lake Eola a couple times with my office group, but this is the first time at UCF for me. And I'm so out of shape, ugh. I know in the past they've given out tickets to a UCF football game to race participants. It doesn't say anything on the website about it yet (unless they recently added it), but it does mention a survivor parade in the stadium. For the last couple years, that has been done at halftime. I don't know if that has changed this year, but my friend who always does this race said they aren't the most organized group, so maybe some info will show up later.

can I join in on the meeting? Waterford lakes sounds convenient? I work during the week but could get away for a bit. Or maybe an early dinner?
-
Yeah that would be an ideal location, but we'll have to wait until UCFmom is free after taking care of her DH. I am available whenever you two are.
Aurora
-
me too!! I'm near Bumby and the 408!
Boobies for doobies!!! I might have to steal that one!
-
Waterford Lakes would be great for me, very close.
jbokland, I grew up near Bumby & 408 in the Lake Como area. I was there when they built the 408! Feel free to use boobies for doobies, but if you get shirts made I want to order one too - preferably with sparkles. lol
Thanks to all the Orlando ladies for the warm welcome here in your thread.
-
On my non chemo weeks I could meet - I have off on Fridays and Saturdays while I'm going through treatment . I typically do not have weekend off so I'm taking advantage of this

if the taste of food is weird try sucking a lemon wedge or:
believe it or not....

my sister in law (who can grow anything) grows them. (Synsepalum dulcificum)
I gave them to my father while he wes in chemo years ago from her bush. I thought then "Someone should market these" Years went by and i found a clinical trial on them for chemo patients. Now someone else has made a business out of it. They really work.
BTW..we lived here back in 1978. You should have seen it then! Semoran was an empty scarey road!

Hi! Just a buttinsky note from a lurker. The Tampa 3 day Komen walk has been cancelled due to lack of interest and funding. Ya'all might want check to be sure the Orlando walk is still on.
-
From what I read online, the 2014 3-day walk was cancelled over a year ago. Looks like they cancelled several of those. The regular 5k in Tampa Bay (St. Pete) is still on, isn't it?
-
i so admire people who can walk 5K!
-
lbrewer interesting site. I looked at one of the recipes - a smoothie, but they didn't give the recipe, just said to mix everything in a blender and add the fruit sweetener etc. I will have to check it out later, I'm on my way out tonight.
-
i just ate a berry before eating
-
So you can get the berries and just eat one before you eat? That helps with the metalic taste?
-
you can get them on amazon they even have a tree! wonder what it does for steamed broccoli!
