Kellogg2006- Welcome! Sorry for the reason you here but glad you found this forum. The ladies are extremely helpful and it is great to have people to talk with that understand what you are going through. You will do great! Review the list of things to have on hand as there is some good advice (ie. geet your meds filled before the surgery, buy some tank tops w/out bra shelfs so you can just step into them, etc.). Please ask any questions as being nervous is very normal!! Take care!

Hi all,
I had a lumpectomy, 6 lymph nodes removed, and a total hysterectomy on July 3. (No cancer in reproductive organs, thank goodness.)
Stayed in hospital overnight and have been doing really well since. The staples and drain came out after about 11 days.
I am feeling pretty great, except for some soreness under my arm and am going back to work on Monday!
Of course, I see the oncologist next Thursday to get a plan for my chemo and radiation. I have no idea how that will go, but I have already learned to put one foot in front of the other and to take one day at a time.
Good luck to all of you as you continue on your journey.

I have been so out of touch. Significant issues with depression. I feel the darkness lifting. I may not cry today. The bmx is healing on the right. The left implant remains under my arm & up into my neck. Two drains on top of muscle, removed Tuesday. Two under muscle removed yesterday, Friday. Now, wearing a miniPad on the holes because of drainage. Soaked a nightgown, pillow & mattress last night. Wore a towel until about an hour ago when we switched to the pad. May need a baby diaper later. I was so excited to have them removed. Not so much now. No discomfort at all when any one of them was removed.
I am having repairative surgery on my left side Wednesday. I was previously told by PS that I would have to wait at least a month due to skin integrity concerns. I do believe I have ugly breast syndrome. My chest is a mess of bruising, bulging red & black scars, lumpiness and pain. It is from the implant placed at the time of surgery. I had a lot of skin available for implants, so immediate reconstruction was touted as a good choice to avoid further surgery. It is speculated that I have muscle contracture & failed Allederm. Oddly, this is a wonderful distraction from the cancer.
I don't have my pathology report yet. I had surgery on 7/3/14, & meet with the oncologist & BS on Tuesday, 7/22. Everything has been a waiting game for me. I'm so tired of this, of hurting. My journey has been a series of starts & stops, dead ends and turns. I always thought I'd be one of the strong ones if faced with cancer. I imagined putting that stong face forward and people saying she never complained. Well, thank goodness I'm not afraid to whine cuz this sux.
I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer. I'm just being honest. They tell me I came out of recovery telling everyone, "I'm blessed." I am & I know it. My children are grown. I have a loving & caring husband of 45 years. I pray daily giving thanks & asking that each of you is given health & hope. Be strong sisters. We will fight and win.
-
Becky - we are with you! All you went through so far with surgery and complication and pain and with such a strength and humor... I admire you! You have every right to get out of strength, to feel sad or disappointed... I hope it will now get all better for you, for the healing and for the mood.......

Hi July sisters,
It's been awhile since my last post. I had BMX with lat dorsi andTE on July 2nd. Still have all 4 drains in but should get 3-4 of them removed by PS on Monday. That will be a relief. A few days ago I started to spike a high fever, headache, nausea, and it knocked me flat on my back. Started antibiotics and temp is back to normal today. I met with the oncologist last week. Six treatments of chemo each spaced 21 days apart. This coming week I will have a PET scan and echocardiogram and have a port placed. And the journey continues. Wishing speedy and full recoveries to all.
-
Purplegurll - do you know what kind of chemo will you have? How do you tolerate the drains - has the fever been associated with drains? MIne were only 7 days , removed 8 days ago and I still have not healed left drain exit, got antibiotic oinment but I am not sure how well it is working as the pain along that place is still present, no fever though. Is chemo postponed due to the fever ?
-
Hi Kimag,
I am having TAC: taxotere, adriamycin and cyclosphamide. I think the fever may be due to an infection with one of the drains. The fever is gone now after two days of antibiotics. As of today three of the drains are under 20 ml drainage and the other one is close, so I'm hoping the PS will pull at least three if not all four tomorrow. I still need to have PET scan, echocardiogram, and port placed this coming week so I don't expect to begin chemo until at least the week after and I think they told me all drains would need to be out before they would start.
-
Purplegurll - thanks for information, it is also a good idea to check with dentist if all teeth are well - at least that was the advice I received in the past while dealing with lymphoma, I hope your drains will be removed soon, I seemed not to tolerate mine well, and deal with issues to heal, I was able to have it removed when they were draining below 30 ml it was enough. I noticed that I do have some small fluid build up on right side as it was draining more before drain removal.
I took out the sterile strips from incisions as per surgeon request and noticed that one edge has not sealed properly, guess will try to see my doctor tomorrow.
I am so stressed waiting for appointment with oncologist.... I strongly feel I would get chemo, most likely TC as I cannot take any more of
adriamycin.
-
Kimag,
What problems did you have with the adriamycin?i hope you get to see the oncologist soon. It's so hard waiting for appointments and results.
-
Purplegurll - I had already adriamycin when I was treated for lymphoma 18 years ago, one of the rare but possible side effects of this chemo is a heart damage (see here for example
http://chemocare.com/chemotherapy/drug-info/adriamycin.aspx#.U8xrNrFsCXk)
therefore there is a life time dose for it, especially if combined with radiation to the chest (left side - heart) which I also had
It might have saved my life 18 years ago but I cannot have it anymore same as radiation.
It is not to scare you or so, I did have this chemo and I am still here
you will also see many many others on this forum who took it but it is good to know about this side effect, some patience opt for other chemo regime when they learn about it but the point is do you have a doctor you trust that can explain why s/he choose this for you and if there is any other chemo that can work as well but have not this effect. on heart. Maybe I will have heart issues due to radiation and adriamycin but without it I might have never had chance to have my family, to have my sons, to have 18 years of life and hopefully more so you see my point?. Each chemo has side effects and it also vary from person to person

My surgery is 4 days away and I'm starting to get really anxious. I have a running countdown in my head these days ("5 days left with boobs....4 days left with boobs") and the closer I get the more my heart races when I have those thoughts. Hoping everyone else is managing ok whether you are pre or post op. August will be here before we know it, right?!
-
belleb- You are going to do great! I am counting the days but have a few more than you. Take a deep breath and, as many have said, it was easier than we imagined. I think it is easier in part because you have action steps and things you need to do after the surgery whereas right now you are waiting and trying to think through it. Take care!
Ally
-
belleb - waiting is the worst part, you will do great, I agree with Ally we try to think through it, if only we could stop thinking sometimes..
-
Thanks guys! I know we all "get it" here
-
belleb, you may want some one to take some pics before surgery. My husband took many for me clothed & bare chested. I haven't been able to look at them yet, but I'm glad I have them to help with my grief work if needed.
-
That's a good idea, Becky
-
Second surgery in 20 days, tomorrow. PS will attempt to put my left implant in the pocket...again. It slipped out on the way to my room following the bmx. He told me today that he may have to use a TE first. I'm so tired of all of this. I'm sooo tired of the swelling & pain. However, I'm really excited to have a lovely profile and cancer free chest.
Swimmom2 I hope all went well for you. Let us know when you can.
Monica 1013 Thinking of you too and hope all went well for you too.
-
Good luck tomorrow! Hope it all goes well.
-
Hi everyone,
I have a question. Had lumpectomy on 7/17 and it's been almost a week. I haven't experience any severe pain but my right breast (with cancer) started swelling day after the surgery and it's getting worse. Now it's 1.5 times bigger than left breast. Also I feel the heat but don't have much pain. Is this normal after the surgery?
-
Nao, if it's warm, I'd call the dr. Could be an infection. Do you have a fever?
One week to go for me. Starting to get nervous!
-
Hi Straightlover,
I called Dr's office and nurse told me it could be something called "seroma" after tissue is removed with surgery fluid build up in the area. And yes I feel the liquid oconsistency under the skin. Think of it I had the same thing when I had core needle biopsy maybe I tend to get it. Luckily I don't have much pain or fever. 1 week to go... I know it was the hardest time for me my heart was pounding and couldn't sleep much. Your surgery is on 7/30 I will be praying for you.
-
Becky how are you feeling now? I hope this next surgery went well and you are doing well as well?
I was wondering if anyone has experiences a low blood pressure after surgery? I have always been a low BP person but after getting my kids the BP got a bit higher and kept above 100 and above 70... now I am lucky if it is 100/70 most of the times it is 90/60 or below! I asked surgeon she said it is ok, checked blood work with my GP - no phone call means ok, I have episodes of feeling so tired or weak and have done nothing to cause it, when doing my exercises after surgery I get dizzy quickly even though it is just stretching not a work out. I am not sure what else I can check, I need to to my exercises, need to go walking moving to get back my stamina but I am getting scared now to do it alone. A week ago and today on my healing connection meetings (talking about prosthesis , diet, exercises etc) I have almost fainted and I was the youngest doing the exercises.. I am getting worry and have no idea what else to check and with whom
-
Nao, if it's a seroma, they can stick a needle in and drain it. Have you had your followup appt w/ your surgeon? I assume you did not have a drain since you had a lumpectomy? Thanks for the prayers!!!
Kimag, are you taking any kind of med that would lower your BP? My mother just had to stop taking her BP med because she is on Lasix temporarily, and her BP was getting too low.
-
well tomorrow's the day. I am so nervous! To top it off we rent out a condo, which we just put on the market 2 weeks ago and the tenants moved out and left it a disaster. So now we have been cleaning and painting for the open house this weekend.
-
Kellogg- Irresponsible tenants...just what you don't need. Maybe it will keep you busy and make the day pass quickly. You are going to do great tomorrow!!
Ally
-
Kellogg - will be praying for you tomorrow! Sounds like you need will rest form the cleaing/painting, too.
Hope you kept the tenants' security deposit!
Had a bit of a scare. The hospital called to do the medical history, etc. Then she said I needed to be there on 7/31, and I was like what??? My surgery's supposed to be 7/30! So she had to call the BS's office and get it straight. There were some crossed wires; someone else is having the same surgery on 7/31, and someone entered something wrong I guess. Supposedly it's all taken care of, I hope, LOL!
I think the worst part now is I'm not supposed to eat after midnight, but I don't arrive at the hospital until 1:45PM, and my surgery is at 4:45PM. I'm gonna starve!!!!
-
Straitlover- Yikes...what a phone call. Glad it was straightened out. I hate when I have the later time slot in the surgery...ugh. I am a big breakfast eater and coffee drinker so it is a bummer when I have to skip. I have a feeling I am going to be late in the day because the PS's nurse said that he likes to get the longer procedures out of the way first. I had a late time slot for my SNB and, once I got to the hospital, I just watched a movie and sort of dozed so it went more quickly. The worst was in the morning for me. LOL!! Best of luck!!

belleb,
