Hi ladies!  I just received my invitation.  I have DCIS with an infiltrating component.  One of my nodes tested positive.  The doctor said that this type of cancer normally does not cancer, so they don't trust it.  I have no idea what they are talking about!  Has anybody ever heard of DCIS with an infiltrating component?  Please let me know.

Hi and I'm very sorry to hear it was confirmed. Yes, there are many ladies here who have DCIS with either a micro-invasion or a larger invasive component. The docs are right. DCIS with a small area of invasive does not usually go to the nodes. How big is the invasive portion? Here's the thing, even though DCIS sounds like what they stressed to you, when there's even the tiniest amount of invasive cancer, the diagnosis is no longer DCIS, but IDC (or ILC if that applies). The DCIS at that point becomes incidental. Most IDC develops from DCIS, but not all DCIS becomes invasive cancer, so most women who have IDC, also have DCIS found along with it. Make sense? Do you know the receptor and HER2 status yet?

Best of luck and I'm sorry you've joined the official club.

    Lintrollerderby,

I do not have my report (yet).  I know from my mammogram report, the tumor was a little larger than 3 cm.  I know that my largest lymph node was 1.2 x 1.2 cm and that I am ER+/PR+ HER-.  The doctor told me my tumor grade is 2.  Your summary makes perfect sense.  Thanks!

You're welcome and I hope you get a treatment plan in place soon because it'll help you feel more in control of this chaotic time. With regards to the 3cm, were they referencing the entire lesion (both DCIS and IDC combined), or did they just mention the IDC as being that size? Chemo is a strong possibility, but hormonal therapy is certain.

I missed part of your answer. I would imagine if it was your mammogram report, it's likely referencing the combined area of both.
