I just read an article that indicated that a gel containing tamoxifen & applied to the skin was as effective in reducing the growth of breast cancer cells in women with noninvasive cancer as the pill form.  It caused fewer side effects, according to the study.

I am taking exemestane because I didn't want to deal with the side effects of tamoxifen.  But I am definitely going to speak to my oncologist about this as an alternative.

I haven't heard about the gel, do you have a link to the article?  I'm sure it would have less SEs systemically, but I can't imagine a topical gel containing tamoxifen could be as effective as oral tamoxifen. (in helping to prevent invasive bc). Are you having any SEs with the aromosin? (do you have DCIS or LCIS?)

This was an article about study results, I don't believe that this is currently available for prescribed patient use.

SpecialK is correct.  This was a paper published in Clinical Cancer Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research.  The article was written by Caelainn Hogan of the Washington Post.  But knowing this is something that is being worked on is worth following.

I have DCIS and am taking exemestane. I have been taking it for apx 1 year. The only SE I have noticed are muscle aches and some hair thinning.
