IIDC
My first post: diagnosed 6/27/2014 . My tumor is 1.5 cm, est and pro pos,HER neg. I also have an area of precancer cells on opposite side, so I will be having a bilateral lumpectomy July 31. I will have 2 wires inserted the day of surgery to help the surgeon locate the tumors; also am having 2 sentinel node biopsies. I will have a blue dye and a radiopaque dye put in the nodes so the surgeon can locate those during surgery. I know I will have oncotype test done. Will this be done on breast tissue removed during surgery? I have read other posts and they sound so much more knowledgeable than I. Am I missing info?
Anyone know how you come home from surgery? a bra or not. a compression bandage or not? Will I be wearing a bra immediately after surgery? Will my regular bra fit? How deformed will I look? My malignant tumor is at 7 o"clock. I am 71 years old but still like to look fashionable.
I know this is rambling; I have handled this very well so far emotionally.

Hi Ruby - Sorry we missed your post until now. You will probably come home wrapped tightly in bandages and such. I had two excisional biopsies by two different surgeons, one said not to remove the bandages until he saw me the next week, the other said to remove them and dress the area and rebandage - so it probably depends on the surgeon. You'll probaby be sore, especially from the node biopsies. A friend of mine developed secondary pnemonia from the too tight dressings and from laying in bed too long after surgery so watch for that. The onco type test will be done on the tumor that is removed.
So far your stats look pretty good. Think about joining the Jully or August Surgery Sisters in the Surgery forum. it really helps to be with others who are going through the same things. If I can help with anything just let me know. No matter the age or stage it is still very scary. Gentle hug.

Hi Ruby, I had a lumpectomy and I woke up in a surgical bra. I had 6 wires placed prior to my surgery. It was not painful because they used lidocaine. I'm fairly sure I wore that bra for about two weeks after surgery just because it was comfortable. The sentinal node was much more sore than the actual lumpectomy. They'll use the tissue from your surgery for your Oncotype test. Good luck to you. If its any help, I only needed Tylenol after I came home! Oh wear a button up shirt to the hospital, it'll make getting dressed much easier!
