July 2014 Surgery Sisters

Welcome Mel, Hyphecolie, Jeaniebeani - I am sorry to hear about your delays .. I was very lucky to not have one as the night after my surgery there was a big storm and rain and part of surgery dep. was flooded and.... all scheduled surgeries were cancelled! Should I be a day or two later I may be waiting for new date..
Today my 2 drains were removed! Such a pleasure, maybe I can cuddle my kids again as we are not afraid about them pulling them out
Ladies I still cannot figure out should I dring protein shakes or is it enough to have protein from food. My doctor did not recommend any and I red somewhere not to start it by myself, can I overdose?
have a good night everyone!

Add me to the July club (I think! waiting on a call saying everything's for sure booked). I am scheduled for a BMX for 7/30. I don't have a full pathology yet (stage, grade, etc), but I know I have adenosquamous carcinoma in rt breast, a rare subset of IDC (like 1% of all bc diagnoses). MRI show sit at around 1 cm. Hoping against hope that's what comes out in the surgery. AC doesn't respond very well to chemo from what I read, and if it's small, I won't need it. AC is usually ER-, PR-, Her-.
I am very high risk (diagnosed at 49 YO, sister w/ stage IV IBC at 48YO & lasted 16 months/Jan 2007, another sister w/ stage 1A IDC at age 52 YO back in September 2013, one paternal aunt w/ some kind of BC). I've been doing the multiple biopsies w/ papillomas in both breasts and now this. If I don't BMX, I will have to alternate mammos and MRIs every six months for years on end, so I'm just gonna do it. My mother has multiple myeloma, and I have to help take care of her (lives 75 miles from me), so I hope my recovery's not too long, LOL. I was going to tell her this weekend about my bc, but she's back in the hospital. I'm hoping she will get to come ome tomorrow or Sunday. Otherwise, it will have to wait until next weekend.

thank you kimig for the welcome, I did use protein bars and some shakes with ice cream, a lot if chicken and vegetables, I didn't at MX cause I did not know about the protein stuff, but it did notice that I had better healing with the protein,my PS stated that it helps a lot , enjoy the hugz from your children and keep us posted, hate the waiting part,,,,

I'm so swelled. I'm wrapped in the ace bandage per doctor's order, but it isn't helping. I have new bruising from the squeezing exercices. Does anyone else? I can't get my arms down and my left side is swelled passed my collar bone. What has worked for anyone who is doing the same?
-
Hi everyone,
I am also having surgery this month on 7/17 so let me join the club. They found more loose calcification (beside tumor) with mammo when they were trying to find location of clips from biopsy. Calcification could be cancer and I asked doctor if I should do Mustectomy and she said I am still a candidate of lumpectomy. But how can she be sure? What if it's cancer and left in a breast? But I decided to do lumpectomy, see pathology result and be cautious for screening. I find this community very helpful and everyone is talking to and caring each other like sisters so I'm really glad to find it.
Good luck to everyone!

Welcome Nao. It is so helpful to have the experiences & shared ideas of others. It sounds like you're making informed choices with your surgeon. I find the information on this website to be invaluable in making choices and feeling comfortable about it. Best to you on your journey.

I feel very good but can't wait to get rid of these drains from my 7/2 bmx surgery and lat dorsi/TE reconstruction, hopefully on Monday at my PS appointment! Gosh these drains are a pain in the neck. I'm wondering if they might also do a fill that day. I remember her telling me they put in some fill the day of surgery but not how much. I am not wearing any bra, just a light bandage covering. By the way, all those comments about constipation following surgery are 100% on target! Ladies with upcoming surgeries, keep it in mind no joke!
I did finally get the pathology report last week. The right breast showed no cancer (yay!) but the size of the cancer on the left (3 cm) was double what they had thought from the biopsy and MRI. There was also involvement of the lymph nodes which my BS had not expected. So my staging I think is now IIB. I will meet with the oncologist this coming week. While I was apprehensive about surgery, it was the possibility of chemo that really scared me. Being triple negative with lymph node involvement I assume they will recommend chemo. I've started looking at the chemo threads and I am more nervous than ever.I hope and pray that none of my July surgery sisters will have to go down this particular road but if you do, know that I will be there to assist and support you. With big hugs to all.

Welcome Nao,
Purplegurll I am thinking about you and hope that you will find great oncologist who will help you to go through chemo... I am still waiting for my results, maybe Tuesday and worry what will show up... my drains removed but the wound from right drain does not look very nice, i put some polysporin and maybe contact nurse tomorrow.
-
kimag - Thanks for the welcome! Congrats on getting your drains out! Hope that wound will heal up quickly for you.
Becky63 - Sorry to hear about the swelling - I hope it goes down soon!
Welcome Straitlover and Nao!
Purplegurll - hope you are able to get those drains out on Monday! Sorry to hear about the lymph node involvement. I hope you have a good appointment with the oncologist and they are able to answer all your questions for you to help put your mind at ease. Take care!
-
sending lots of love and thoughts and prayers to each of you...especially those of you recovering from surgery. I go in on Tuesday for mx on left side. I'll check back in on y'all afterwards. Thanks for all of the invaluable info! So much to take in. Take care, everyone!
-
Mel147- Wishing you the best on the 16th! Know we are with you in spirit and will be waiting to hear how you are doing.
Jess1965- Thinking of you for tomorrow!! It will go great and let us know how you are doing!! You have done all you can so now it is time to let others do their jobs.
kimag- So glad you got the drains out. I had to put neosporin on two of the entry points for about a week after the removal. Two months later, that area is still sore so it is a long slow recovery I guess.
Hugs to all the July Surgery Sisters!!

brac35- Thinking of you!! Best of luck tomorrow and know that we are with you in spirit and will be here to help you during the recovery!!

Hi all! First time posting on this thread, but it definitely applies to me. I did neoadjuvant Taxol, Adromycin and Cytoxin for 20 weeks. On July 1,2014 I had a skin and nipple conserving BMX with expanders. The sentinel node and 2 additional nodes were removed. I spent 2 nights in the hospital and was sent home with 2 drains. I returned a week later to have the drains removed... Anticipation was much worse than the removal! I experienced more soreness than actual pain and was able to get off the pain meds and switch to Tylenol after 5 days. So, now it's been 2 weeks... I'm still sore and very tired, especially in the evening. I was originally diagnosed as TNBC, but they re-stained the tissue sample that they had from my needle biopsy and it came back 30% positive for progesterone. (My pathology results from my 7/1/14 surgery came back clear... Yeah!) My oncologist wants me to start on anastrozole... Does anyone have any thoughts on that? I know there can be side effects. Thanks for listening and here's hoping we all get through these chapters with a little bit of pain and a lot of grace!
-
jess1965, hope everything went Ok today! If the 1965 is your birth year, we are the same age.
Barbed, brac35, Mel and Nao, good luck Wed and Thurs! Hope I didn't miss anyone for this week.
Becky, is your swelling any better? When do you see the doc? What squeezing exercises do they have you doing? I watched a video from a hospital for exercises after mx, but I don't remember any kind of squeezing ones.
I meet w/ the PS tomorrow to come up w/ our plan. Have not got confirmation for sure on my surgery date, so I will call tomorrow. My mother is still in the hospital, so did not tell her about my bc yet. They did a thorocentesis today (after giving her 2 bags of platelets) since the lasix did not help get the fluid off her lung. Hopefully she will be going home tomorrow, so I will tell her this weekend. I may have to either way because I will probably have to work the next weekend, so I won't get to see her then.
-
Barbed, Mel, Nao and brac35 - good luck and fast recovery
I got the results today and it say : pT1a as there were 2 points of invasion 2.5 and 0.5 mm
grade 2/3 other then that it is 7 cm DCIS grade 2/3- 3/3 with clean margins , surgeon said it
is considered microinvasion but the number there 1a suggests it is
not.... have not heard yet anything if ER/PR positive , they have not
testes for HER2I am not sure what next, have to wait for oncologist. I am scared of possible chemo, not sure I can go through it again... no rads for me as I got life time amount already.

Hi everyone. You are all brave beautiful women and I'm grateful for a.community like this to connect with. I do not have breast cancer but I have tested positive for BRCA 2. My mother and aunt have both faced cancer and since testing positive for the mutation had a double mastectomy with reconstruction in 2010. My cousin was just diagnosed this past spring with breast cancer at only 29. I am 25 and my doctors and i have decided to go ahead with a prophylactic double mastectomy on July 29. I'm at the point where I wish it was tomorrow just to get it over with but at the same time some part of me hopes the day won't come at all. I have to say that for the most part, I'm confident that it's the right choice.
-
hirisk- Welcome! It is so hard to make the decision but, I found, once I decided on a course of action, it felt good. You are going to do great and the 29th will be here before you know it. This community is a great place to ask questions, any questions. Also, there are some great tips for items to have before your surgery and things to do (like get your prescriptions filled) now. There are several that have been on the same path and are only to happy to help. Good luck with all this as I know it is a lot to process and deal with.

Thank you all for you support, it means such a lot. I hope everything is going well with those of you who have had you surgeries already.
Just a quick update. I've been promised the option of having prophylactic surgery if my DNA tests positive and possibly depending on final staging tomorrow. I'm regretting that I had not pushed for bilateral from the beginning - it's not the done thing in UK. I was relieved to find out that they have decided to try more chemotherapy as I knew surgery alone would be a bit of a wing and a prayer with my dx. I've just about recovered from the Taxotere but my nails haven't and I ended up this week with an infection and cellulitis in my thumb. I was a bit worried I'd get postponed - fortunately, it looks like it's beginning to clear. I'm wishing I'd taken the advice about the constipation.. I've just arrived back from the shops with a supply of instant dinners and having been out all day having scans for tomorrow, just going to have to hope it'll be okay... the antibiotics might counteract it.
Good luck to everyone still to have surgery and wishing everyone speedy recoveries - It's very reassuring and lovely to know your all here. xxx

Hi: I had surgery on July 9, a lumpectomy and two lymph nodes. I've already been told that because I am Triple Negative, Grade 3, I will need 4 months of chemo, and a month of radiation afterwards. The chemo is called ACTG or (BRAJACTG) and includes Adriamycin, Cyclophosphamide, Paclitaxel (Taxol) and Filgrastim/Neupogen (GCSF). I don't have a clue what any of them are, I only know I had to have an adequate score on the MUGA heart test in order to be able to take them, since one of them can damage the heart. As I write this, I realize, within myself, I will go ahead with the chemo and hope for the best. I don't have to start it until early September, so hopefully will be able to enjoy August, with a lot of swimming. I just came across some work by a man named Stephen Jenkinson. He talks about a "grief that loves life" and "grief and love soaked ties". There is a documentary about him called Griefwalker, which I haven't seen yet but looks very good. He is giving a talk in Vancouver BC this Saturday evening which I am going to attend. It's at SFU downtown, if there are any vancouverites on this Forum. Cheers, pjc

Met w/ the PS today. He is going to do skin sparing BMX surgery (nipples will be gone) and using alloderm. Need to look that up to see what the deal is with that.
He said doing accounting work and at the computer all day, I could be back to work in a week. Yeah, right! He also said that I would be ab le to shower when the bandages come off; don't have to wait until the drains are out.
-
Straitlover- Sounds very similar to my procedure (PBMX/alloderm and TEs). I was back at work (computer) the following week. Really tired by the end of the day but it was not awful. I remember showering with the drains hooked on a shoestring tied around my neck so I know I did not have to wait for them to come out before showering. I posted pics in the pic forum (something about TEs and exchange in August) if you want to see the incision and how it looked. These pics were after the fills so about a month past the actual surgery. You will do great! To be on the "safe" side, if you can, take 2 weeks or at least 1.5 weeks. Even better if they are willing to let you come back when you can without a set date. Good luck!

Thank you for the kind welcome Ally and mods! I realize it's a very different journey not having a cancer diagnosis and doing things with preventative goals. The BRCA forum isn't as active though and as the surgery date gets closer I just find myself wanting to connect with others who have had or are having this surgery.

Hi everyone,
I had my BMX with TE's in December. Been down the chemo road since then, currently in rads, and hysterectomy / oophorectomy coming up in the fall.
Any questions about your surgery or recovery, I'm happy to share anything that would help.
Peaceful thoughts to you.
P.S. - I did not end up having to quit my demanding job or even go on disability leave. It CAN be done!
-
hi everyone,
Came home yesterday after my mastectomy/te. Ended up having axillary node dissection after two sentinel nodes were positive. For me, most of the pain is based on the removal of the axillary nodes---but so far now major swelling and I seem to be recovering well. Got pathology report this afternoon and all 19 axillary nodes are clear and all margins are clear! Big sigh of relief on this end!
Straitlover, we are birth year sisters : ) incidentally, I am Tarheel born...but have lived in th midwest the past 30 years.
barbed, brac35, Mel and Nao, hope you are all recovering well and keeping you all in my heart as you recover.
Jeaniebeanie, hope everything went well for you too.
Am feeling grateful that this part of the journey is behind me. Meet with oncologist next week to get more info about adjuvant treatment plan.
Will be sending love to all my July surgery sisters. Trying to just keep breathing and taking it one step at a time. Take care everyone!
-
jess1965- So glad your path report was good!! Sounds like you are doing as well as can be expected. Take care of yourself and remember: just because you can, doesn't mean you should!
Heal well and quickly!
