Starting Arimidex tomorrow

After more than a month going back and forth trying to decide whether to start Arimidex, I'm finally going to begin tomorrow. It comes down to giving myself a chance to make sure I don't have a reoccurrence. If my Oncotype DX score wasn't 23, I might have been able to decide earlier. I don't like the idea of side effects, but I'm sure there are hundreds if not thousands of ladies that are taking Arimidex without any major problems. So tomorrow I will finally begin and hopefully it will be non eventful. -
I have been taking Arimidex for about 45 days now and find that I have some side effects, but not terrible. I am having some breast swelling and pain, some hot flashes and have gained about 5 pounds. My bones are somewhat stiff, but they were before the Arimidex as well. I go to my Oncologist on Friday to see how my lab tests are, and I am sure she is going to recommend a mammogram for me. I am scared to have one...that will be a difficult day to go through that again and hope and pray that it comes back normal. Colonoscopy came back normal last week, which made me very happy. My Oncotype score was 19 and didn't have chemo, just radiation. -
I was also Stage 1 Grade 2 and did not have to do chemo, but my oncologist wants me on Arimidex. I won't see her until September and she will have my new lab results at that time. I also go back for a mammogram in October. I'm sure I will have the same fear as you do and I'm sure thousands of other breast cancer survivors. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Arimidex will work for me. I have severe allergies anyway, so I'm only beginning with 1/2 a pill today to make sure I can tolerate the ingredients that are used as binders etc. One day at a time!!!
-
The other thing I recently discovered is that every time you go for the Arimidex it may be made by a different manufacturer. Therefore, there may be different binders in the pill....the second month of pills was different from the first and seemed to be slightly different. The hot flashes have started to worsen and I am having breast pain. I see my doctor on Friday and I am waiting for the results of my blood work. Also, my joints seem to be getting stiffer.... -
Hi girls, just popping to add to Sistercoyote2 post above in relation to finding that the binders are the things that cause the most SE. If at all possible ask your Pharmacist to get the same brand for you at all times as that way you will find you will not have the variation of SE.
Good luck to all of you and I hope it works well for each of you.
Love n hugs. Chrissy

I took Tamoxifen for three years and had another cancer diagnosis. Switched to Arimedex at the first of this month and so far, no SE. My MO prescribed Effexor to help with hot flashes and mood swings after a few months of Tamoxifen, and I'm still taking the Effexor with the Arimedex with no problems. I highly recommend an antidepressant if your MO suggests it. Not only does it helps with hot flashes it really helps with focus and improves my attitude .
-
Did 5 years of Arimidex. No problems. Most people do not have horrible SEs, it is just natural that those who do are the ones talking about it, the rest are out just living their lives. Go in with a good attitude.....this is a pill that will REALLY reduce your chance of recurrence & we are lucky it is available!

Aloha Ladies,
I started on Arimidex 30 days ago, have follow up appointment with MO today. Hot flashes came back with a vengence, I had been taking effexor since menopause, I doubled the effexor dose and hot flashes are gone. The other SE i had was a decrease in cognitive function....fuzzy brain, unable to complete tasks, worried i could not retun to work as my job requires me to focus. I saw a psychiatrist (as i thought I was going crazy) and he placed me on a psycho stimulant. I now feel normal and confident to go back to work. The bad thing is I have to take more meds to counteract side effects on a med, and of course everything has side effects. My Oncotype score was 0. Three Oncologist said they never saw a score of 0. So with the adjunct thearpy I have a 3% chance of reoccurence, however all three oncologist could not tell me what my chances of reoccurence are without therapy. I got educated guesses from 6% to 30%. I really do not want to take any of these meds. I am still up in the air about taking the arimidex.I also had a bilateral mastectomy with one being prophylactic. My breast surgeon said i would not need further treatment, so I was quite stunned when 3 MO's said I needed to take arimidex. Has anyone heard of Oncotype of 0?

Never trust what a surgeon tells you about future treatments....their specialty is surgery. Period!

Dear Lijuehan,
I did quite a bit of looking for these answers when I was put on a generic by Sun Pharma of Arimidex...It is straight from India. Then I asked for a brand name from a military installation (as my husband is retired Air Force). They labeled it as the real Arimidex but alas it was a generic that was based in New Jersey but I could not find the actual manufacture site. Then I bought the Arimidex straight out and it was horrifically expensive but I wanted to see if it made a difference. Oh yes, I had digestive complaints and did not feel well. Arimidex is made and patented in Great Britain. Currently I am paying $150.00 a month for brand name that is sent from an ethical and established Canadian pharmacy...I have been told that with a prescription the maker- AstroZeneca will send it to you for $30 a month but they want to keep your credit card on active standby and I have not decided if I am going that route. I can tell you that I was diagnosed Stage 4 at the get go and I think I want the best if it will hold the cancer back. Yes I have had 7 months of no new activity and some regression..Plus I feel great and have virtually no side effects. I realize that everyone' s situation is different and I totally respect that. So you will find no brand name manufactured in USA but I will tell you I am very leery of the stuff coming in from India. There are only 12 FDA inspectors for all the meds coming in from India. I cannot believe that the meds would all be kept in the optimum temperature controlled environments. In addition, there are reports of rodent hair in some of the samples. Good luck ...

I'm also starting Arimidex The beginning of August after I have my ovaries out. Have all of the same fears. Joint pain is what I'm fearful of the most.
Question to ruthbru: Did you take generic or name brand? I have the generic from Teva but I'm feeling like I should start on name brand and then if I have problems switch to the generic. I know it's different for everyone. Just curious.
-
Dear Carolyn,
Thank you so much for your input. I appreciate you taking the time. My MO said he will fill out the paper work that says it is medically neccessary for me to have the brand name. so insurance will pay for it. I will take Great Britian over India anyday. At the moment I too am taking the generic by sun pharma. I think half of my side effects come from the thought that my cancer med comes from India...I have been to India.

My first three years I was on name brand because generic was not yet available, once it was I switched (at the time, generic was hundreds of dollars cheaper each MONTH). I never had problems with either so didn't bother to check out where they came from.
