Don't do pain meds at all!

I am posting this on behalf of my mom. She will be having a lumpectomy on both breasts on Tuesday. She is very scared and worried because she doesn't take any form of pain relievers..... Ever! I think she can handle one baby Tylenol tablets. Does anyone know of an alternative to strong pain meds? She has also been told that this is very very painful. I'm very scared on all levels for my mom. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks and God bless all of you!

Hello Nicolejoeled, I am so sorry your Mother is facing this, but I am glad to see she has you looking out for her.
Firstly, at the time of the surgery your Mother will be given medication to help make her comfortable when she wakes. So she may not even need anything more than that.
I haven't had a lumpectomy, but did have a Mastectomy and I didn't need any pain medication at all after that surgery. It was more a surgery of strange sensations, a bit sore, but not pain. I don't care for taking medication either.
There will be others along, who can speak about lumpectomy, just remember that we are all different and the "very very painful" statement doesn't apply to everyone.
If it were me, I would back off discussing this with your Mother right now. If it is an issue that is going to stress her out, just let it go and wait till she has had the surgery and see what happens. The medical staff will monitor your Mother and assess if she is in too much pain and will give her options that she can accept or refuse.
I wish you and your Mother all the best, please let us know how you both get on.

Hello Niclejoeled, I am so sorry to hear about you mother. I am 59 and had a lumpectomy in May. l don't know the extent of her surgery, mine was a 1.5 cm tumor on the upper outer part of one breast and they just removed the 1 sentinel node so it was not a really big surgery. It was all done under general anesthetic and I felt ok when I woke up. They gave me powerful painkillers but they made me feel weird so I only took two and after that just a few tylenol. .Do I think I could have managed without painkillers at all, in my case yes. I was given an icepack that I used too. The surgery was on a tuesday and I felt tired but was working again the following week. I actually found the core biopsy beforehand the most painful thing, not the surgery.
this is JUST my experience and everyone is different. It sounds like your mother is having more done than me so I would say make sure that you mention it to the doctor so they can keep a close eye on her, which they will do anyway.
I also wish your mother the best of luck on Tuesday. Do keep us posted.

Your mother should openly discuss pain control with both her surgeon and her anesthesiologist (he's the pain specialist, by the way), and with the nurse who will call the day before surgery, to give presurgical directions and ask oodles of questions. Truly, based on my experience, pain was minimal, but I was very happy to have medication available. Yes, I took the painkillers they gave me on day one. Day two, I used tylenol during the day and took one painkiller at night only, to help me sleep, but could easily have ditched that one. The ice pack was wonderful, and, if your mother is a tough as I suspect, might be all she will really need..
I assume you will be with her? Please do be open with both the nurses and her surgeon about her not taking pain meds, and maybe make sure they hang onto her until her IV meds have worn off, so everybody knows how she is coping.

thank you so much for all the comments! She has spoken to everyone involved about her not taking meds. They don't ever seem to take her serious. I was just wondering if anyone else had gone through something similar.
Yes I will b with her and am ready to stand up and be her strength, her rock. And I will b talking to all the nurses and doctors. My mom is usually the pillar of strength in things like this. She helped me get through the births of all 5 of my boys, most recently my 3 month old twins! She doesn't like to be vulnerable. And she is not used to people helping her or asking for help. It's been kind of difficult for my sister and I to ever no what to say! OoShe is just most concerned about the pain after and the meds. She birthed my sister and I naturally so I think she can do this!
You all, along with this site, have been so encouraging and helpful. I am just trying to learn as much as I can! Thank you all so much! And god bless each of you!

I didn't need pain meds after day 2. Fill the script and if she is in enough pain, she will take the meds guaranteed!

Nicolejoeled, there was a time when painkillers were given very sparingly post-op. However, research showed that people actually healed faster if they used pain meds - apparently energy is used either to heal or deal with pain. Please let you mother know this. If she really is OK with the level of pain she has then you don't have to worry, but remember it's one thing to refrain from taking pain meds because the level of pain is not unbearable and another to refrain from taking them because you want to "tough it out".
I don't know what the level of pain is for 2 lumpectomies. Is she also having sentinel node biopsy? That's another incision and I have been told it's more painful than the lumpectomies. I can't tell you from experience what it would be since I had mastectomies in 2 different surgeries and I definitely needed pain control afterwards (and I had 5 births without any pain medication so I don't define myself as a wimp!). She won't know how painful it will be until it happens. Please ask her to keep an open mind about what she'll need in terms of pain relief.
I wish her the best of luck with her surgery.

Hi my mom is just like your mom!! In turn I turned out the same way lol and my daughter who is 26 seems to be carrying our tradition on! I had a lumpectomy and used nothing other than Tylenol after I left the hospital. I did speak to them about my choices prior to surgery and they used something during surgery for pain. I really had no issue managing it but it's important to tell them her wishes prior to surgery.

I had three lumpies and was sent home each time with pain meds, think they were tylonel codeine. I filled the first script, took one then did tylonel plain for a day or so. Never filled the second script. Filled the third but since I never took the earlier ones....leftovers. The ice pack in my bra was good. Your mom will be fine, have them if needed but betcha she will not take them or need them

I had a large 7 inch bat-wing lumpectomy of right breast. I was a little sore for the first three days but never took more than tylenol and was just fine. I absolutely hate the feeling I get from any type of pain-killers and avoid them at any cost. Had my lumpectomy on a Wednesday and went back to work on Monday. My biggest fear was that someone on the elevator would bump into my right breast - but thankfully, it never happened!. Wishing you and mom the very best.

hi Nicole,
I had a lumpectomy, 17 lymph nodes taken out and a port put in all in one surgery. The lumpectomy was a little sore no big deal. The port placement felt like someone punched me in the chest and it hurt a little, but the lymph nodes surgery under my arm was very painful and 4 years later it still bothers me. Not sure if your mom is just having lumpectomys she will probably be fine. Like the others said fill the rx and if she needs them she will have them. Good luck and keep us posted.
