Question about Swimsuits after double reconstruction.

I had a double reconstruction done in 2010.  One side a Lat. flap and the other implant is under the muscle.  Question is, we are planning on going to Hawaii in October and I was looking for swimsuits...needless to say, I feel uncomfortable in my body now, but I actually felt sexy in one swimsuit I found..the only thing is, it was in black, which I looked REALLY good in.

Problem is, the black could cause burning on my chest, without me knowing that I am burned..although, I think I would notice it since I can't spend too long outside and my arm has lymphadema and bothers me the second I start to burn.  Do you think that if I had a "cover-up swimsuit dress" it would be enough to prevent burning?  Something like this:

I would ask my plastic surgeon, but because of Obamacare, I no longer have her.

Thanks for any input!

That is a lovely cover up, but not sufficient for sunscreen purposes. Get a high SPF to prevent burning by UVB rays, preferably with a broad spectrum to also protect against UVA.  Apply liberally and often.

I personally prefer sunscreens formulations not available in the US because they are more effective and I order them from Europe. That is an FDA rant for another day. For US based, look to Neutrogena with Helioplex and other high SPF.

Then go out and rock that black swim suit!! Have a great vacation.

I agree.  I use the Neutrogena helioplex SPF 50 and never burn.  It still allowa me to get a tan, however, just takes a little longer.  I became a high SPF fan even before my BMX and because I live in Seattle I'm always pasty white at the beginning of summer.  Prime conditions for burning.

A high SPF is now your best friend.

I am glad you found a swimsuit you feel great in! I second recommendation for sunscreen...even if you do get that cover up. I have my own favourites (I am a pale redhead so am quite familiar with many brands and varieties of sunscreen after 35 years!) but the main thing is to find one that is broad spectrum, photostable, at least SPF30...I personally wear higher but there are some issues with exaggerating SPF in US and effectiveness does not increase dramatically once you get over SPF30...some people also fail to reapply if they go higher SPF!...and to reapply OFTEN...as in every 2 hours, after swimming, sweating (yes, even if waterproof!) and even if you just sit in the shade. Apply it before you put on your swimsuit on breasts, etc. Your tissues are thin so it is important to protect them and the scars. And of course, your LE is a concern too.

Cover up as best you can when in sun (they also make SPF clothing and rash guards for when you are not in that swim suit!)  and limit sun exposure between peak hours (around 11-4) by finding some shade. Don't worry, you will still have plenty of opportunity to rock that swimsuit!
