Did your doctor order all of these tests?

Petscan/CT, Bone Scan and Echo.  I get the echo, but does everyone get a Petscan/CT scan and a bone scan?  Just curious.  I am also meeting with the cardiologist (my request) and having an ultra sound on my left breast (also my request).  Doing all of this this week.

I think it is normal when you have positive lymph node/s. There is a possibility that it might have spread to bones and/or organs so it is part of the staging process.

They check the heart before commencing chemo as some drugs can be rough on the heart, so they need a baseline cardiac function.

Yes, that's what I am scared of.  That they are going to find the cancer somewhere else.

After surgery and before chemo I had head to toe CT, bone scan and MUGA. My Onc did it as a base study. Needed the MUGA because of the Herceptin. Make sure to get all your technical copies of your reports.

So I was diagnosed at a radiology facility and got a MRI and a PET and a PEM. Think I had an echo before rads. Had US and many followup mammos before all that.

Nancy, don't put the cart before the horse. I think anytime there are positive nodes they order those tests. Only one positive node is a good sign from what I've read. You're still early stage and that's a good sign! These are routine tests. I only had a breast MRI, chest xray, heart ultrasound and the MUGA test. My Onc said other's weren't necessary due to my path report. I trust him but always question whether or not I should've requested more tests, especially since my cancer was triple negative. I can't go back in time so I just have to trust the docs and pray for the best.

Sounds usual to me.  I had  bone, CAT, MRI and PET scans and an EKG (some have MUGA).  My PET 'lit up' on an area along lower jaw so had a biopsy done  but no problem.  Sounds like your Dr is just 'covering the bases'.

I often wish my Dr would have run those tests...because now I have to wonder. It would have been nice to KNOW that it had not spread.

My ONC told me there was no need for me to have scans or MRIs or ultrasounds done. I think that's a good thing in that the probability of the cancer spreading was low. The Path report drives these tests. My sister has to have them but she has ILC- I have IDC. Her's tends to travel; mind does not. Doesn't mean it won't but they are using info from my Oncotype test to determine the likelihood and will not order those additional tests to preserve my piece of mind. Frankly I can't handle more tests to get nervous about so I am content to live for the moment. Doesn't mean I don't get anxious before my mammogram because I do but that's life. Probably never be the same since my DX because once it happens you are branded.

My diagnosis is similar to yours, and I had CT of abd/pelvis/chest, bone scan, MRI, and echo all before starting chemo.  My MO said it was standard.  I'm glad I had all the tests!  It gave me more piece of mind from the beginning.

I was just talking about this subject recently on a different thread. I had a Breast MRI, Bone Scan (scintigraphy), CT scan, and ultrasound during staging. I went to an NCI CCC and they told me it was standard to do all of the imaging that they did; I was Stage I. Perhaps it was standard for all breast cancer work ups, or maybe in young women (I was 34)--that part I don't know. I know 3 other women who were early stage and pre-menopausal like me who went to the same center and we all got the same imaging, with the exception of one who was HER2+ who got an additional MUGA scan due to Herceptin. I think they're just being cautious since breast cancer can be sneaky.

Positive nodes, so MUGA (prep for chemo), PET, EKG, ultra-sound.  No CT, which I found interesting.

The PET can sometimes light up areas that are benign; there is a protocol to follow for avoiding carbohydrate laden foods before the test, so I hope you were given those instructions.

clairinaz - MUGA is not always done before chemo or when it is known that nodes are involved.  I did not have a MUGA, just an EKG before I started neoadjuvant A/C.  It was known that I had positive nodes as the first 'sign' had been an wnlarged node which was biopsied and it was positive for IBC.  Even though I was 63 at DX, I was in excellent health with no issues to worry about so an EKG was all called for.  Had 'something' showed up on it then more testing would have been ordered but nothing did.

There is no 'One Size Fits All' when it comes to imdividual TX plans.

Well I had a bone scan yesterday and the tech said there was a spot on my spine.  She asked if I ever injured my back which I had a few years ago and sometimes it causes me issues.  However, I believe that was the result of a disc which doesn't involve the bone so now I am terrified.  I had a pet/ct scan today and that wasn't so bad.  Now waiting to hear from doctor and am really, really worried about the spot on my spine.

Nancy, I'm very sorry that you have this worry. I know it's hard, but try not to worry until and unless there's confirmation of something. Since you have previously injured your spine, that could be what's causing the area to show up. Please let us know what you find out.

Waiting for results like yours is just awful.  It might take a while for you to get a call as they will probably review and compare the bone scan to the pet (so it's more complicated than just getting the results of one test alone) before talking to you.  Disc issues can sometimes light up a bone scan because it's common to have degenerative bone changes along with the disc.  There are other benign things that can show up that May or may not have anything to do with your previous disc issue (facet arthrosis, etc). I'm not trying to disrespect your fears - just trying to encourage you that your tech's comment isn't a diagnosis.  Avail yourself (safely) of the Xanax as needed for now.  I hope you get good news soon!
