July 2014 Surgery Sisters
I'm having bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction on 7/3/14. I had a lumpectomy & ductectomy on 5/22/14. I had a leaking breast & other symptoms since 11/2013. The fifth doctor I saw was concerned & sent me to the BS. FINALLY. I worry that it may be too late. I have a lot of back and rib pain. Just learned that I have a fractured vertabra. I developed a cough after the first surgery that has gotten worse. I have huge breasts, 38 H. Grieving the loss, but so anxious to get this step over with. I'm guessing I'll have less back pain with my smaller gummy bears. Oh yes, I'm 63 yo & really out of shape.

Becky best of luck and many prayers and hugs for a successful surgery.
Sorry to hear of your back and rib pains. I know you will definitely feel a weight relief on your shoulders and back with the removal of your breasts.
Get plenty of rest prior to surgery and after surgery eat lots of protein in fact set a goal of 100 grams per day. Drink lots of water as well.
Keep us updated on your progress.
-
Thanks jbdayton for the prayers & hugs.
Great advice about water & protein. Any suggestions for getting 100 grams of protein daily? Yogurt is the only high protein, low calorie food I can think of.
-
Hello, I will be having a lumpectomy and reduction on the 11th of July. I am scared but it is not too bad yet. I think it will be when it gets here though.
-
Hi tekwriter. Are you afraid of the surgery or the diagnosis? I used to be so frightened of surgery. Now, I can't get this done fast enough. I need to know what's happening in my body. Limbo, while we wait for surgical openings is so anxiety producing for me. My lumpectomy & ductectomy on 5/22/14, revealed DCIS. The MRI after that revealed a 14.2 cm mass remaining in the right breast and a smaller one in the left. I am prepared intellectually to learn that it's not DCIS alone. I am emotionally terrified of what I might learn. I am giving you a hug and prayerful thoughts. We can do this.
-
Hi I am joining you Ladies, I have mastectomy scheduled for July 4th, I am scared I hate anasthesia always feel like choking
I am scared of what the pathology results will show, if there be IDC or pure DCIS (as per biopsy). I had lymphoma 18 years ago and breast issues right now are very likely due to radiation I got back then. I am turning 37 few days after surgery
-
Hi ladies,
I will join you as well. I am having bilateral mastectomy with tissue expanders on July 2nd. I have reconciled to the surgery although I suspect Tuesday night before surgery will be difficult. The core biopsy indicates 1.4 cm IDC and ILC, ER-, PR-, HER-, stage IA. We will see what final pathology after surgery shows. I also had a lumpectomy and radiation six years ago for DCIS.
-
I dread the surgery. As kimag, I had trouble breathing after my last surgery and don't look forward to this one although am told it will be different.
-
kimag and Purplegurll- Wishing you both successful surgeries. The worst part seems to be the few days before when you are trying to make sure you have everything and are prepared to go. Just know that you have lots of people thinking of you. I wish I had some advice for the "choking" sensation but I don't recall anything but a sore throat after my surgery. Maybe some others will have some advice.
Take care!

Hello to everyone having surgery this month! July is the first anniversary of my mx. I too dreaded my surgery. I had just had a lumpectomy and breast reduction six weeks prior. I hated the thought of being cut open again. I thought that the pain would be horrendous. I was so so scared. But I have to tell you all, for me, it was more than tolerable. Any pain, nausea or discomfort I had was managed beutifully in the hospital. I only stayed on the hard pain meds for another day or two; then switched to Tylenol. I woke up with two drains which were no problem at all. They were removed a week later with no problems. Everything that I was afraid of turned out to be not nearly as bad as I feared. I did just fine and you will too!!!!! Be sure to take colace two days before your surgery to help your bowels. If you're a coffee drinker, be sure to have a cup or a few sips with your first meal after surgery. I woke up with a headache from not having coffee and once I had a little bit, my headache went away. I am here to answer any questions you have in the hopes of easing your mind(s) a bit.
Blessings, hugs and much love to you all!
-
Ally, Nancyinct thank you a lot. Why would I need colace before surgery? so far my bowel works ok, I read that after it may be needed? I have a little cough and some running nose have to ask if this is ok, i do not feel sick maybe it is allergy but I as scared as I am I do not wont to delay surgery
-
Yes, your bowel is ok now however, after the surgery many people have constipation and the colace helps to counter-act this.
-
Tekwriter - The breathing tube can cause a sore throat, hoarse voice etc. I would mention what happened to you last time to your surgical team and perhaps they will be able to prevent the same thing from happening. I had two surgeries in 6 weeks (lumpectomy w/breast reduction) and mx. The first surgery I woke up with no voice at all for about 4 hours. And the second surgery I had no throad issues whatsoever. I did have some nausea with both surgeries which was quickly treated by the wonderful nursing staff. You just have to let them know when something is bothering you or if you need help.

its been a while since I have visited this site, but anyways I have surgery too this month....In feburary I had my mastectomy with reconstruction, alloderm and tissue expanders....I hate these expanders and can not wait for them tocome out! I will be having my exchange surgery...I am going to 800cc...not sure if I am getting saline or silicone...I haven't made up my mind yet. I hope everyone heals well and fast!

For protein I was told by my PS's NP to get these tubes from Amazon with 42g per tube. I tried the wild berry I found at Walmart and could only stomach 3 tubes and cannot force another one down. Told my PS and he said other patients said the watermelon flavor seemed to be the most tolerable. I have managed 1 a day.
I also do yogurt smoothie with honey almond butter or cashew butter with bananas and berries. I can get 20 g from that. So I try to do one in morning and one in the evening.
Snack on some nuts in the afternoon.
The protein tubes are called New Whey Liquid Protein, 12 tubes, $41.15. Not real cheap but for healing problems well worth it.
I will be honest they taste horrible but I could get the watermelon down.
-
jbdayton - why it is so important to get so much protein? who much is the best for a day ? should I start eating more protein before surgery? or after?
-
Hello,
I'm also joining you. July 7. Right Mastectomy. I'm 30 and terrified of the surgery. I've never had any kind of surgery before, and after reading about drains and the pain I think I'm more nervous than I was before. In fact I'm awake at 3:30am because I'm so nervous.
How long does it take for drains to come out typically? And before your back on your feet?
Thanks. I have felt a lot better since getting support from this website.
-
Just jumping in after reading to mention how I got my protein in.
I drink chocolate premier protein shakes. They have 30 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar and 160 calories. The cheapest place I've found them is Sams and Costco. I think they taste pretty good. I drank 3 a day all through surgery recovery and now radiation.
Good luck with your surgeries!

brandyrose- you are going to do great! The waiting is hard and the drains are a pain but manageable. There are great ideas from the people on these boards about things to have to make the recovery a bit easier. Things like a shoelace (to hook your drains to and put around your neck) when showering, notepad and pens to record drainage output and medicines, tank tops that you can step into and pull up (no bra shelf, just a plain tank), lip balm, etc. If you are feeling anxious, that is ok and you are in good company. That is what makes these boards so great! Everyone recovers diffferently, I was feeling good enough to go to work (desk job) after a week but I am really tired at night even now. The drains also vary. I had 4 and 2 came out after about 5 days. The third came out about 10 days and the 4th hung around for 2 weeks. It all depends on your output and the work you had done.
Take care and let us know how you are doing!!
Ally
-
Why the protien shakes? Is it for healing? Are you having trouble eating?
-
brandyrose - Just like Ally said "you are going to do great!!!" The fear is so normal. I had a mx on the right and woke up with two drains. I was afraid of virtually everything. The drains were not painful and came out 7 days later. They were not even uncomfortable just inconvenient more than anything. It's hard to hide them if you want to be out around people. I pinned them to the inside of my top. It was not painful when they were removed either. We are all here for you and the anxiety will probably increase as your surgery day gets nearer. Be good to yourself and trust in God; he will take care of you.
Nancy
-
Brandyrose - I also cannot sleep as I am so stressed. I know I should rest to get strenght but I just can't, only 3 days left
-
brandirose and kimag - You most likely can get an anti-anxiety medication to help you get through the next couple of days if you want. My bs prescribed some weeks before my surgery. I did take one here and there, but chose to ride it out. It is normal to have anxiety and be afraid. So I knew that after a night or two of no sleep that I would eventually tire myself out enough to sleep at night. I just got up and did things around the house to keep myself busy. It's all ok. The waiting is the worst!!! Hang in there, you're getting there one day at a time. And if the day is too hard to get through then concentrate on getting through one moment at at time and one procedure at a time. We all here for you.

Hello all
July 22nd for me - bilateral w/ DIEP reconstruction. Super anxious, I just want this out of me, start treatment, and continue on the road to normalcy. Don't get me wrong I am really nervous about the surgery but this limbo period is not a fun one and being a 35 year old widow with a 6 year old - this diagnosis has thrown a wrench in my day to day. The control freak in me is not having any of this and would have liked the surgery to take place the day after I was diagnosed but I am using this limbo time in my favor - quality time with my lil love, my life, my rock, my future US world cup soccer player.
Good Luck to all the July Surgery sisters!
-
Nancyinct - thanks a lot, I does help a little when you feel a part of the group, knowing that people before me went this way
I am still struggling to decide should I go for BMX or only UMX and watch.... I am high risk due to radiation to the chest in the past, I have to make this decision by tomorrow
-
Monica1013- I so know what you mean about limbo-land...you just want to get it behind you. The 22nd is when I have my pre-op meeting before my exchange so I will remember it and be wishing you a successful surgery. Meanwhile, enjoy the time with your future soccer champ!!
kimag- It was hard for me to decide and I ultimately went for the BMX because of the age of my kids and not wanting to go through all this again (family history loaded with BC0. However, the one thing that I did learn is that it really is an individual choice and you need to do what is best for you. Once you decide, you will know it is the right decision when you are at peace with it. At least that is how it was for me. Take a deep breath and do what is best for you...someone else here is probably going through the same thing and you will find lots of people on similar journeys!
Take care!

Hi everyone!
I am having a lumpectomy on July 14th. I also am having implants that I had put in over 30 years ago removed and new ones put in at the same time. I have been so thankful for finding this site. It has lessened my fears about the surgery and radiation. Just knowing how to prepare for the surgery and what to expect when I come home has been so helpful. Because my implants are so old, the plastic surgeon thinks they may have ruptured, so he will be putting drains in. I am also scared - can't sleep, but I also can't wait to get this behind me and start moving forward. I am having brachytherapy three weeks after my surgery, and then I see my medical oncologist to find out what drug I will be taking - my cancer is estrogen positive. My thoughts will be with all of you during your surgery and recuperation.
-
Tek, yes the protein is for healing purposes. It's worked so well for me.

Today is the day for nuclear med. procedure. I read the posts and now feel better informed but scared. Anything that can go wrong for me through out this journey has. I expect no less today. I have to pack my dog and her stuff, deliver her to my daughter, head south for the procedure, return home, pray with friends, then, get into my own packing and cleansing shower. My husband is going to take pictures of my breasts tonight. My grief has returned. As much as I want these deadly globs gone, I am going to miss that part of me. I'm sad that the life I had is no more. I've been trying to get medical attention since November of last year, 8 months of breast discharge and pain. 5 doctors told me it was normal, relying on my mammograms and ultrasounds...which show nothing still. I have that big mass described as at least 14.2 cm by the MRI that was completed only after a lumpectomy and ductectomy confirmed cancer. I have struggled to be hopeful and not angry. I fear matastatic cancer. If early diagnosis is the key to survival, I don't stand a chance. I am worried that my daughters and granddaughter now have to be super vigilant. We know mammo & ultra sound can't be trusted. I hadn't cried for two days. Now, I can't stop as I leave this cruel limbo land. Please say a prayer for me today. I'll see you on the other side with my perky gummy bears.
-
Becky63- Prayers are with you!! Know we are here for you. You have been through so much and tears may help. It has been a long, twisted path for you and it is understandable to grieve for what was. But I know you and your strength will help you focus on the future. It's going to be great. We can't wait to see your perky gummies!
