Complex cyst or local recurrence?
first dx'd 30 months ago after finding lump on the edge of left breast near sternum. Initial US back then was cyst, recommended 6 month FU. GP recommended seeing a surgeon who believed lump was benign; excisional biopsy revealed IDC, lumpectomy at later date to clean up margins. Surgeon was very surprised. Oncotype DX came back at 42 (see all my perts 'n stuff below).
Fast-forward to a few weeks ago; routine CT revealed what are likely hepatic and splenic cysts so meeting with MO to discuss. Exam reveals a new lump at the site of my previous lx. Lump is taller than wide, attached to chest wall and solid/firm. US returns finding of "complex cyst with debris" 1.5 cm x .5 cm. MO says "uh-huh, no way did I feel a cyst" sends me back to BS this morning. He says it's a cyst, pokes me several times with a needle - no fluid whatsoever. Says he's still pretty sure it's a cyst but if I were to have a local recurrence, "that's where it would be." Scheduled for excision in two weeks.
Getting tired of all of this. I really want it to be a cysts but can't help but wonder.... Anyone with a similar experience one way or another?

Hi Nancy,
My experience is a little different, but I started a thread recently about something found on an MRI (intended to be used as a baseline for future monitoring). I have to have an ultrasound next week. Lots of assurances from others that it is nothing, but - once you've been there - it's hard not to go there again when something like this comes up, right?! I keep telling myself that most of the time these things are nothing. That's true even for those of us with a personal history! I will be thinking of you and praying for clear results - please keep us posted.

Nan - thanks for the response. I want very much to believe it's "just nothing" but with discordant results between physical exam and US, and my history with cancer that looks like anything BUT on imaging, I'm just a tad uncomfortable. We tried but failed to get the lump into the mammogram - it's too central on my chest. So....I gave to be patient. So funny that I'm not freaking out - I think I did enough of that the first time around that I know it doesn't do any good. Good luck with your testing too - let us know his it goes!

quick update for those who happen upon this thread. Had excisional biopsy this morning. Surgeon said the mass was partly cystic and partly solid. Fluid in cyst was bloody so he sent if off to pathology. Removed part of cyst wall so if wouldn't refill. Then removed solid lump and sent that off to pathology. Indicated concern because the solid area us in the same spot as my previous cancer (because he came upon clips he left behind from last time), but "not as concerned" as last time ("concerned" is his code word for "yeah, it's cancer."). Should get path results Monday evening!

Praying for only good results - and for the waiting time to go quickly for you! It sounds like, even of the solid portion is something unwanted, it was caught very early... But, I'm hoping/praying/betting on scar tissue. Hugs!

Oh Nancy. My heart just dropped when I read this. Not so much because of what it might be, but because of what you must be feeling right now. Crap. That is all I can think of to say.

thank you for your good wishes and concern. I keep repeating the BCO mantra, farmerlucy - "don't go there until you go there!" I was a little freaked out yesterday but after a good night's sleep I feel much more relaxed and less anxious. It'll be what it'll be and yes, if it is a recurrence I can hope we caught if early. Will update again when I know more!
-
please let us know what they told you today. I am praying for you.

thank you all for your kindness! Doctor just called; hematoma and fibrocystic scar tissue! He said it looked "odd" which fueled his concern but they thoroughly checked everything and there were no malignant cells! I'm so grateful for this news; I am going to enjoy the rest if my summer and leave this whole Stupid Cancer thing behind for a while!

Oh, congrats on the B9 results. I am so excited for you. Enjoy the rest of your summer. I hate this disease.
