Wishing you all the best Peepgirl.
I just had my annual Mammo on (left breast only of course) and I showed the radiologist my right recon breast (with the nipple shared from the left) Her and the tech said WOW and Incredible!) She said oh yeah Mike is good! He really knows what he is doing. I hope all goes well and you are pleased with your results.

Hi everyone,
Time is flying by and my surgery date is just two weeks away. I will be at Agh with Dr White. Has anyone been a patient of his? I have not seen him mentioned on this topic at all. Sandpiper, thanks for offering to check with your sister. Was she familiar with Dr White?
Thanks all and hope everyone has a good weekend

Yes Rose. sorry I had forgotten to ask her. Sent her a text..Her esponse was "Yep, I know the name....he does fantastic work!"Wishing you a restful time before sugery.
Glad you are comfortable with your doc and I could give positive feedback

Hey all. I had my bilateral Mastectomy last Monday. Dr. Bonaventura did the mastectomy and Dr. Gimbel is my plastic surgeon. I was able to have skin and nipple sparing on both breasts. They look great. I am really pleased with the outcome so far. I have very little bruising and already have some shape of breasts. He filled my TE to 200 cc to start with. I see Dr. Gimel tomorrow for my first follow up. Im hoping I get my drains out but we shall see. They are such a pain. I am very happy with everything thus far and would recommend both docs to anyone going through this process.
-
Good luck with your upcoming surgery, rose. Great that you are happy with your results, Nicole.
-
Nicole32, I had the same surgical team as you, and I too have been very pleased. My skin sparing BMX with tissue expanders was on April 7, 2014. I was not a candidate for nipple sparing. I was filled to 350/300 cc at surgery. I am currently at 470 cc and receiving fills every two weeks. Best wishes to you on your reconstruction process.

Hi there - At Rose111, I used to work at AGH and Dr. White is an excellent plastic surgeon! Often listed in PIttsburgh Magazine as one of the best, so you are in good hands. .All my docs are at AGH (breast surgeon, oncologist, radiation oncologists) and I actually had a consult with Dr. White's partner, Dr. Heckler, but ended up going with Dr. O'Toole, because I wanted to do direct-to-implant (no expanders) and at the time, he was was only doctor in Pittsburgh who was doing that. I think there are a few more that offer it now. Anyway, all the best to you. Is all your care at AGH Rose? -
thanks, Sandpiper, I appreciate you checking. Now that I am less than two weeks out, I am just looking for reassurance.
Morning sun, thanks for the good wishes. I am reading and cleaning like a mad woman!
Hi wildrumara, i am happy to hear good things about AGH. I live just over an hour north of Pittsburgh and all my surgeries and treatment have occurred in my hometown so far. My GS works out of AGH and spends 2 days a week seeing patients in my town. I have only been to AGH to see Dr. White. I feel lucky to have the best of both- a small community hospital and local surgeon and all the expertise available at a big city hospital. Thanks for all the good info.
-
@Rose 111 - Yes, that's awesome. Glad to hear it! Hmmmm....are you in Butler, or New Castle, by chance?
-
hi wild rumara, I am north of new castle, in Hermitage/Sharon area.
-
Very good....know exactly where that is. Know several people from that area. All the best to you with your surgery and recovery!!
-
thanks for the good wishes, wildrumara, three days and counting!

Hey ladies. Just wanted to check in and let you know my flap surgery with Dr. Gimbel 2 weeks ago went really well. Dr. Gimbel did an amazing job creating a breast where there previously was a crater from a failed implant. He even managed to save the nipple. The girls don't match perfectly, but with one flap and one implant, I knew going in that wouldn't be possible. The originals weren't exactly the same either. I'm very pleased and very grateful. I would give Dr. Gimbel and his staff the highest recommendation.
-
hi everyone,
I am just getting home following my surgery last Friday. So far i am also very happy with my results. Dr White did a great job.. We are lucky to have several choices of good PS so close to home. Rose
-
Good to hear Rose!! Hope you were well taken care of? I know with my BMX and reconstruction and then recent liver surgery I had such good care from everyone on staff at AGH......how many days were you in the hospital? .
-
Hi wild rumara and all,
I was very well cared for in AGH. 2 days in ICU so that my flap could be monitored frequently. And 2 days in a regular room. Everyone was very caring and nice. My regular room had a beautiful view of the city at night. Hope all is well with you.
-
@Rose - That's awesome! I'm sure your glad its over....Happy Healing!
-
Smooth healing, rose.

thanks for the good wishes, ladies. I am 3weeks out and feeling pretty good. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Hello All -
I know this thread is about a year old, but I'm hoping for input about docs at Magee. I was scheduled to have surgery with Dr. Bonaventura. Unfortunately, she will be on medical leave for the next few months. I've made an appt. with Dr Diego - a young surgeon in the same practice - and I'm wondering if anyone has or knows of experiences with her.
Thanks so much!
Barb

Hi Pennsygal,
I had a BMX at Magee's on March 25. My BS was Dr. Gretchen Ahrendt, and my PS was Dr. Michael Gimbel. I was impressed and thought that they both did a great job. I have TE's at this time, and I have chosen to wait until fall for exchange surgery with Dr. Gimbel. If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me.
Good luck to you!

Hi Jacquie -
Thanks for your reply! I've heard great things about both those docs - I'm glad you were impressed. I'm having a hard time finding any feedback about Dr. Diego. I'm thinking I may call the PA for Dr. Rastogi and ask her what patients think.
Did you meet with any of the other surgeons in addition to Dr. A?
Thanks
Barb

Hi Barb,
Sorry so late on the response, I just noticed your reply.
It's a long story, but I actually was proactive myself in thinking that I had Paget's Disease on January 2nd of last year, 2014, (cancer of the nipple) and all the local doctors/nurses said that I didn't, and that it was too rare. As a result, I had a few unrelated biopsies that all came back good, but since I was still having a problem with my nipple, a local General Surgeon did exploratory ductal surgery on me March 7, 2014, disconnected the ducts, and also did yet another biopsy that also came back good. So that is the only other surgeon that I saw until I took all my records to see Dr. Ahrendt in August of 2014, and she did a punch hole nipple biopsy right in her office the first time I saw her and determined that I did, in fact, have Paget's Disease as I thought. One thing lead to another, more testing to discover how to address it and 2 tumors were discovered. Since January, 2014, until my BMX on March 25 of this year, I had a total of 9 biopsies done on my breasts, and 5 were done by local doctors.
I have since met women that have had surgery done by Dr. Arhrendt, and were quite pleased. Also, I have had several compliments by visiting nurses or other nurses/doctors on the work that both Dr. Ahrendt and Dr. Gimbel have done on me as far as stitching me back together and healing.
I am not familiar with the doctors that you have mentioned. I live 50 miles away from the city, but I would feel comfortable with any doctor affiliated with doing surgery at Magee's.
I hope your appts. are all going well, I know it's a very scary time, I was scared to death. But everyone that I've dealt with via Magee's has made me feel comfortable and secure.
Take care....
Jacquie

Hi Jacquie -
Thank you for the response! Yes, scared does not begin to cover it!
I feel the same way about Magee - my internist told me that it's the gold standard of treatment, and not to worry! I live about 90 miles from Pbgh, in Hollidaysburg. Where are you? I also have lupus and my rheumatologist is in Pittsburgh as well, so I'm used to the trip. Well worth it!
Everything is going well - I had Taxol #7 of 12 yesterday. I'm looking forward to the end of chemo.

That's great that everything is going well for you Barb. I just talked to a girl tonight that is going to see Dr. Diego on Tuesday. She was recently diagnosed and is just starting, she is also ER/PR+ and HER2-, like you. She's very frightened and I told her to check out this wonderful website BC. I've learned a lot from it, although it can be scary at times, but mostly all helpful and positive.
I hope that your chemo goes by quickly for you; I don't blame you on looking forward to the end of it. I remember everyone telling me how fast the time goes, but when going through it, seemed like forever. Now that time is more like a fog to me. Although, I have 7 more Herceptin infusions to go, and that seems to be dragging as well. Also wishing my hair would grow back in faster too, but they say that Herceptin slows the growth.
How wonderful to hear such good news about Magee's from your internist. That says a lot. We are fortunate to be so close to Pittsburgh hospitals, people come here from all over the world just to see Pittsburgh doctors.
I live in Slippery Rock. My husband has relatives in Altoona. His mother was born around that area, I think Gannister (sp.?).
Good luck with your Lupus too, I wish you all the best! Hang in there Barb!
How about this rainy summer?

Jacquie -
I'm glad I'm not the only one going to Dr. Diego!
This summer - ugh! Today it's sunny and clear - I'm hoping that continues!!

wildramara... I just wondered who your BS was? I think you mentioned he worked with Otoole?

Hello Ladies,
De La Cruz or Gimbel? I met with Gimbel but wasn't too crazy about his bedside manner. I haven't met with De La Cruz yet but am a bit concerned that there is so little mention of her in this forum. It's sad that I'd have to choose but I'd rather go with an expert in breast reconstruction surgery who is a perfectionist as I see Gimbel is referred to over and over again here. Thanks
-
Sapphire - what type of recon are you considering? I saw Dr Shestak in that practice - one of the older docs. Very personable and clear
