North Dakota was settled by mostly Norwegian & German immigrants. One of the two big Lutheran churches in my town was founded by Germans & the other by Norwegians & it is interesting because even today, the one has a big German funding raising dinner in the fall & the other a big Lutefisk (cod fish soaked in lye.....a Norwegian specialty, which I do NOT care for) Dinner. There is also a huge Norwegian Festival in Minot, North Dakota every fall, and I just read in the news that the second most spoken language in North Dakota even today is German!

Back on topic, I would hope that most people would like to spend their money on supplements that might possibly help them!

This clip was very fun -- Steve Buscemi's tap dancing was such a treat -- he is quite nimble and smooth!

The takeaway I got wasn't a "Big Pharma is good, alternative medicine is bad" position. Rather, I do think regulation is in order when reports show that some supplements contain none of the active ingredients listed on the bottle label. Supplements aren't cheap, nor are they covered by insurance. So it would be great if we could feel confident about what we are buying!  I do take tamoxifen, but I am always looking for complementary supplements. I sure hope the Vitamin D3, DIM, and turmeric that I take are pure and actually what are described.

I have heard tales of the infamous lutefisk. Never had the opportunity to sample it  but I'd at least have to try a bite, at my own risk, if offered. I am learning my norsk on line and through YouTube videos. There are several Swedish families at my school and they've helped me with pronunciation. There are also twin sisters who are fluent in Norwegian but they mostly laugh at my errors. They are really amused by my struggle with å,æ and ø. Jeg vil til Norge.

I do take some supplements, D3, turmeric, melatonin, glucosamine/chondroitin, and buy brands that I have found to be reputable but there is a lot of stuff out there whose ingredients/efficacy are clearly questionable. I'm certainly not saying that the FDA is guarantee of perfection when it comes to prescription or OTC meds, but I have no problem with regulation.

Abigail, I am sorry, but that makes no sense. If you can buy a bottle of vitaminD, c or whatever, then I really doubt the Norwegian vitamin police posts a cop in your kitchen to make sure you only take one pill a day.

those nordic lands don't get a lot of winter sun & so must need an even bigger dose ov vitamin d than usual, I don;t take these things so I don't know what's usual, but if the reccomended dose for maximum help is 1000 mg & the drugstore pills are only 5 mg, they're not going to be much help

Abigail, I truly have no idea what your friend told you, but I don't think it is reality.

Abigail, I thought this was according to your Norwegian friend, Bjorg. It was not clear that you had this information from Gary. Good to know.

Abigail, no, no virus. The ads are generated by cookies and other methods that track what you look at on the internet.

my naturopathic doc recommends which brands to choose from for efficiency. I recently had a test to show level of carotenoids in blood, mine were higher than everyone else by 300% even though I was only one who'd had cancer!! I saw other tests being done so know others scired way lower and this was where they wanted to sell me their supps but i scored higher than people taking them!

Abigail, your email has been hacked. That has nothing to do with this site. You should change your password immediately.

Here is some information on e-mail getting hacked.

Are your contacts getting emails that you didn't send? Is your Sent folder (or any other folder) suddenly empty or missing? If so, it's possible that your account has been compromised.

What's the difference between hacked and spoofed?

Your Sent folder may offer the best clue to  whether you have been hacked or spoofed.

    • If you DO find email in your Sent folder that you did NOT send: Your account has been  compromised (hacked).
    • If you DO NOT find  any strange email in your Sent Folder: Your account has most  likely been spoofed.

A compromised account is one that has been accessed by someone other than you. It usually means someone figured out your password (without your knowledge or consent) and was able to log in to your account.

    Check for these signs:

    • Your inbox is full of MAILER-DAEMON rejection notices for messages you didn't send.
    • People you know are getting emails from you that you didn't send.
    • There are outgoing messages in your Sent, Drafts or Outbox folder that you didn't create or send.
Note: If there are no Spam emails in your Sent Folder, but you are still receiving MAILER-DAEMON messages, and your Contacts are receiving messages that you didn't send, your account most likely been spoofed.
    • Your account folders (Sent, Deleted, Spam, Inbox, etc.) have been emptied or deleted.
    • Your Address Book contacts have been erased.
    • During sign-in or when sending a message, you're asked to pass an image challenge.
    • Emails you try to send are suddenly getting refused and returned to you.
    • There are contacts in your Address Book you didn't add.
    • You keep getting bumped offline when you're signed into your account.
    • Your Display Name has been changed or looks odd.
    • Your email signature suddenly has a link you didn't put there.
    • You're not getting new mail or your new mail is going straight into your Saved IMs folder.

If you think your account has been compromised, you should:

    • Change your password immediately.
IMPORTANT: New passwords should be at least six characters long and include at least one number, letter (combination of upper and lower cases) and special character ($, *, &, !, etc.). Make sure your new password is different from any other passwords you have used. Also, if you used the same password for other online accounts such as social media and financial services, change those passwords as well. We strongly advise you use different passwords for different social media accounts.
    • Make sure you have antivirus software installed and updated.
    • Change your Account Security Question.
    • Review any Away Messages tied to your account to ensure no one has inserted spam or other inappropriate content.
    • Check your Display Name (the name people see when you send them mail) to make sure it doesn't contain the letters "AOL", "A.O.L." or "Aol". Spammers sometimes change an account's Display Name.

Speaking of cookies, here's a link to a good recipe for sugarless oatmeal cookies.

Yum, that looks good! I just printed off the recipe, but the problem with me and cookies is that I tend to eat about 12 in one sitting....which somewhat negates the health benefits of them being sugarless! Loopy

Ruthbru, probably right.  For some reason I seem to exercise more will power with these ingredients if I just put them in a bowl together and eat them.

I have been disappointed in Dr. Oz as he has so much good to say and has
spoiled such a good opportunity to educate viewers. I wonder why none
of his production team told him a few home truths about the areas where he could end up giving out dubious information and sabotaging his show.

At the same time, rather than worry about obviously (to us health enthusiasts) silly claims by Dr. Oz, we need to be up in arms about the food industry and our governments' lack of regulations to protect our health.  In order to keep the dollars flowing from junk food companies, our governments turn a blind eye to all the stripping of nutrients and addition of fattening unhealthy ingredients and dubious additives.  Most people live on a diet of starch such as bread, pasta, pastry, cakes and breakfast cereals all stripped of their natural nutrients and mixed with sugars, bad fats and other flavourings and additives to enhance their addictiveness so they can sell more and make more money.

I will start a new thread as I feel this is an important subject that we need to be concerned with.
