I thought some of you might enjoy this funny article from David Sedaris about becoming obsessed with his FitBit http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2014/06/30/140630fa_fact_sedaris?currentPage=all
Patoo, good luck selling your house. I sold mine last fall. What a stressful process and boy did it feel good when it was all over.
Two hours at a hoop jam at the beach yesterday and my two daily dog walks.
This afternoon I'm having my first injection for the frozen shoulder clinical trial. I will have my arm in a sling for 12 hours afterward. Hoping for a good result.

You California ladies might enjoy Cindy's song about the 405 - she's from SoCal.
Ann - cute article! I admit, there have been times when I've marched around the bedroom before bed, trying to get those last points on my Fuelband.
Speaking of which, Friday I plugged in my Fuelband to charge it, and got an error message. When I connected to the Nike site to report it, they said the error was an unfixable issue. Since the Fuelband was still within the one year warranty period, all I needed to do was return it and they'd ship me out a new one. Even better, I'll get a later version than I have now. I checked my date of purchase, and it turns out that it broke just two days before the warranty would have expired! It never works that way for me - usually something breaks two days AFTER the warranty expires.
Hey Badger - your Brewers against my Nats for the next three days - should be interesting!!
-
Been kind of a slug lately - did manage one short hike and some yard work over the weekend, but haven't been to the gym. Tonight I'm grabbing hubby and going for a hike in the woods behind our development, it's a beautiful evening out there.
-
Ann, I hope everything goes well with your first injection !! Would love yo hear the song about the 405 !! That highway really intimidates me!! Traffic like no other !! Hubby and I took a ride up to wine country today !! Walked and did some wine tasting!!! Good day!!!
-
Busy weekend with lots of social activities and food. Did try to squeeze some walking in and spent a couple hours weeding/digging up a bush. Back to work and the gym today for some HITT training on the treadmill plus weights. Tomorrow is back to bootcamp ....
Lilacblue, so true about Zumba. Love that too. Ann, fingers crossed that the trial works for you!!!! Welcome home Red!
-
Hey Mary, we'll be watching! Game starts at 7.
_Ann_ hoping with you for good results!
♥ to all
-
Nats: Congratulations on your Fuelband breaking when it did! How nice that you will receive the new model. All of this has been in the stars for you.
_Ann_: Thanks for posting the New Yorker article. Funny!
I've enjoyed reading what everyone is doing. I power walked/jogged late this evening. I am now wearing all moisture wicking, quick drying clothes (bra, panties, shirt, shorts) and they really make a difference in combating the heat and humidity.
-
I rode the stationary bike and did the elyptical this morning, and definitely plan on a walk later in the day!!! Hiatal hernia is bothering me, have got to lose some belly fat!! What are some good exercises for belly fat?? Thanks!! Have a great day!!!
-
Did my Core class, pilates was cancelled because the teacher got sick at the last minute.
Kindergarten, crunches etc. you could go to the store & buy an ab workout DVD or two. If you can keep one of _Ann_'s hoops up in the air for more than 5 seconds (like me), that would be a great ab workout too!
-
_Ann_ hoping you get good results on your shoulder! Thanks for sharing the article - too funny.
I was a bit under the weather yesterday and didn't exercise. Today I did some stretching and I've done a 15 minute walk so far.
Think I may get one of those hoops this week. So glad I can try it in the privacy of my own home!!
Happy exercising to all!!
-
Hi ladies! I can't believe how much exercising you guys do. It's a little intimidating but encouraging at the same time. I want to get my 150 mins in every week that they recommend. Would walking on the treadmill at 3.5-4.0 be sufficient for moderate exercise? Can anyone recommend a yoga video for someone who has never done it? I'm not even sure where to start. Thanks!
-
Welcome Mommato! Yes, that is a good pace on the treadmill. Denise Austin has some good DVDs, including yoga.
-
Thanks for the compliment ruth. Did you tell them I'm only 33? Or, better still, which is true - exercise keeps you young!
House should go on the market by this weekend so we'll see. Won't 'bury' him until it's listed.
Need to do some more cleanup/out but going out for a walk. Clutter can wait.
Welcome Mommato3 - 3.5-4.0 is a great pace - go for it.
Hi everyone. Badger, did we settle on June 2015?
-
Mommato, I was intimidated too when I joined this thread!! But, they have all inspired me to get my body moving - even if it's just a little bit. Each day I do a little more. They are all wonderful, supportive ladies - and fun too!!! Welcome to the thread.
-
Yes they are. Just back from my walk and believe me it's nowhere near 4.0 but I have over 7800 steps today!
Now up for a big salad and relax.
-
Ruth - If I recall correctly, keeping your hoop off the ground for. 5 seconds is being just a bit generous, don'tcha think? lol
Momma - Welcome . 3.5-4.0mph is awesome! I'm fairly athletic and am 5'8" (not short-legged) and a 4.0mph pace would give me horrible shin splints. 3.5-3.6 is a good pace for me and gets my heart rate up there and lots of sweat even in cool conditions.
Patoo - sending optimistic real estate sales thoughts your way!
-
Welcome Mommato3! At that pace, you'll be doing circles around the group....lol..... Patio, hoping the house sells in record time for you. Sweet, that was funny!!!
Hoping I haven't lost a friend today. We celebrated her fortieth birthday on Saturday night and were discussing my bootcamp class. She indicated that she wanted to lose a few pounds and thought my class sounded great so she signed up for the month yesterday. Came to her first class tonight with me and half way thru the class mouthes to me "you've lost your mind!!".....LOL.... Reminded her my word to describe the class is intense...ha ha.. Plans to join me again Thursday night if she can still move... ..
Sweet dreams sculpted sisters!!!
-
Ruth, thank you!!! I would live to keep that hula hoop around my belly! I am so bad!! The crunches sound good!! Hope you feel better, SlowDeepBreaths!! Patoo, I hope your home sells quickly!!! Welcome Mommato!! The women here are so supportive and encouraging!!!
-
That's the best I can do. I really dislike running and I definitely can't do Bootcamp. Maybe I should get something to track my daily steps. I wonder how many I would get after running up and down the steps taking care of the kiddos.
-
Patoo, good luck selling your house. I've had plenty of practice with my hubby getting relocated 3 times in the last 6 yrs.
-
Hi Mommato, welcome! Kudos to you for exercising during AC chemo. Wishing you manageable side effects. It is a tough time.
Walked a lot today-- twice with the dog and an extra couple miles to the store. Also doing my very dull shoulder exercises three times a day. Pulley stretch, towel behind the back, leaning against the wall, letting the arm dangle, etc.
So I got my shoulder injection yesterday. I do think I got the drug as opposed to placebo. My arm is hanging more comfortably and swings more normally when I walk. Also looks less distorted. But I didn't really gain much range of motion forward or to the side. I will get two more injections, so maybe a bit more motion next time (in three weeks). The injection was pretty unpleasant. Even after BC treatment I still hate needles! Novacain followed by a giant spinal needle for the drug. I read that they charge $3300 per injection for this stuff for the other uses it's already approved for. Isn't that unreal?
-
Welcome Mommato. Kathy when I was 10 I could hoop for hours, when Ann brought the hoops to my house I don't think I could get it to go round more than three times before hitting the ground but it sure works that middle Ann hope you are doing well after the injection and that you get some relief. Mary that was so funny about the darned Fitbit and so blasted true, but I must have been really sick cause I didn't put mine on for a week Odie I'm sure your friendship will endure, look at Badger she's still talking to me after I put her through torture by taking her to Eduardo's Sweat class
I did workout yesterday, I went to Sh'bam in the morning, did it very low key still no jumping around then in the evening I went to my Spin class, I got there 20 minutes early and warmed up, the class started and after 10 minutes I got off the bike and left - I was exhausted, came home laid on the couch and napped till I got up at 11pm and went to bed. Tonight I went to Body Jam, then went into the sauna and steam room which felt so good, still in recovery mode but slowly feeling better day by day.
-
I haven't done a lot this week, one 15 minute walk and one 30 minute. Got to get to the gym soon!
-
Did go for a 3 mile hike with hubby after work Monday in the woods behind our neighborhood. Nice time, though we didn't see any wildlife. He wanted to go further, but laundry was calling me. Did walk at lunch yesterday at work, and made it to the gym after work but only did half my normal routine and cardio, just wasn't feeling it. Some days are like that, and I tell myself at least I went! Hoping for another walk at lunch today. Leaving tomorrow for 3 day work trip, opportunity for walking in the mornings so I'm hoping to do that. It's the eating I'm worried about!
-
Welcome, Mom! I agree with what others have said - doing any exercise at all during chemo already puts you in a pretty elite class as far as I'm concerned! I use a Fuelband as a fitness tracker, and there are several other women here who use a Fitbit or other tracker, and our own Badger loves her pedometer. A yoga DVD I've given to several friends who've never done yoga before is: Yoga: Gentle Practice with Zyrka Landwijt. I like it because it's very gentle, and there's even a separate pose guide you can use to see exactly how to do each pose. It also has several different sessions ranging from 30-60 minutes, so you can pick how much you want to do.
As a reminder to you and other newcomers who may have had lymph nodes removed, remember that you are at increased risk for lymphedema (LE). That should absolutely not stop you from exercising, but there are some common sense precautions you should follow to avoid triggering LE, the most important being that when doing upper body work, start slowly and increase only gradually.
There's an excellent website about LE called Step Up Speak Out that was developed by a bunch of gals on the LE thread here on BCO. It's HON-certified as providing accurate medical information, so it's a reliable site to visit. They have a couple of informative brochures about how to develop a safe exercise program after breast cancer surgery. The first brochure is aimed towards individuals, and can help guide you about easing back safely into exercise: http://www.stepup-speakout.org/Handout%20doc%20for... The second brochure is a handout you can download and print out to give to a personal trainer, fitness class instructor, yoga instructor, etc. It describes LE and advises them about how to devise safe exercise moves for us: http://www.stepup-speakout.org/Trainer%20doc%20for... I use the second one a lot whenever I start a new fitness class - it saves having a long and potentially embarrassing conversation with a new instructor about what I should and should not do.
Ann - I hope you get relief with this trial you're doing. You've been suffering with that stupid shoulder for months now.
Cheryl - glad you're feeling better.
Patoo - good luck with selling the house! We're starting our clean out now in prep for a possible move next year. It's already paid off - I think I wrote about those old coins I found in a box a few weeks ago? We finally took them to a coin shop over the weekend - and sold them for over $1400! That's going right into the credit union to help pay for some of those things we have to do to get the house in shape to sell. Hooray for packrat ancestors!
Badger - some game last night between my Nats and your Brewers - 16 innings is the longest game in Nats history. I was in bed asleep long before the end of that marathon. I have a feeling today's day game will be short and sweet - I think we'll see a lot of strikeouts because they're all too tired to run the bases!
Did a half hour run in the heat and humidity this morning - 73 degrees at 6am - yuk!!! Looking forward to yin yoga tonight to stretch everything out.

Here's my weekly picture. The Wednesday Walkers monkeying around in the park.

-
Besides the park, here's where we walked:

-
I've been pretty much off the grid as far as exercise goes these past few weeks but am enjoying reading what everyone else is doing. Need those voices........
-
Mary, you must be psychic - I have a friend that had a lumpectomy without SNB a few weeks ago, and now they want to do a SNB. I was talking to her about lymphedema, and I remembered you had posted links to that booklet, but for the life of me I could not find the link. So I just signed on to BCO to ask about them, and the first post I read is yours giving the links! Thank you!
-
Psychic or psycho??
Good for you for being proactive and helping your friend. My best to her.
Ruth - great pictures as always. I need to retire and find a walking group!
Sweet - sending my Voice all the way back to my birth state of Michigan for you!!!
