Summer Rads 2014

Jhondro I'm hoping for PT if the shot doesn't cure me! I know you must be ready to be done. Chemo is tough. I have two friends that have just came through it and one is now in rads. She said rads were a cakewalk compared to chemo. She's doing fantastic and her hair is now a spiky cute gray cut.
I am planning on getting my radiation tattoos (three of them) removed. I have 6 total but two really bother me. They are constant reminders. They drive me crazy now. A friend of mine thats a surgeon said if they bothered me that bad he would treat me with removal of them as long as I was a compliant patient and went to all of my rads appointments. I've been quite whiney with a few friends and I think he's afraid I wouldn't go. I'm NOT missing treatment lol. I want this to be over!

It's been awhile since I've posted and I'm just catching up on everyone's posts. I finished my 7th rads treatment today. I have 18 full breast and 8 boosts left. Based on what everyone else is posting i thought I would share what my instructions have been.
I was told after the fourth treatment to begin using a mild soap on the area, like dove, and to only use miaderm two times a day. My appointments are at 3pm so I use the miaderm first thing in the morning and then before bed at night. I was told not to use anything else on the area between my tattoos at all. I am to use natural aluminum free deodorant, and the only shaving I can do on that side is with an electric razor - which I HATE!! I get this big rash after i shave so I think I am going to have to stop soon depending on how much I react to the rads. I am allowed to swim but need to rinse off as quickly as possible afterwards to get the chlorine off of my skin.
So far the treatments are easy. I have pink skin, my nipple is sore if anything brushes up against it, and my "zingers" are back where I get those quick shooting pains from the nerves that were damaged by surgery. All very manageable at this point though.
The two things I am having issues with are trying to still work full time, be a mom and wife and fit in an hour and a half to two hours to travel to and go through treatments. And I am already really feeling exhausted at times. Not just tired, but like I need a nap or I will fall over on most days. I know I am probably doing too much but as much as my boss is super supportive, I still have to get all of my work done. The only thing in my favor during the summer is my kids are so active at summer camp during the day that they are going to bed a half hour early. That being said, my DH was on a business trip this week so I was alone. I am hopeful it might get better when he returns...maybe.
I think someone did post about this earlier, I am contemplating removing at least one tattoo based on where it is, and potentially turning the one on my side into something to signify the journey. Is anyone else?
Hugs and best wishes to all!
-
Sunshine, Awesome you won't have to go through this. Did they tell you what kind of boosts will will get?
I got lots of tape LOL no tatts. But I am thinking of getting a small Phoenix maybe on my ankle/foot area. If I'm not a whimp. I'm not into the pink ribbons and all that stuff.
-
Lina I have those same "zingers"!
Rett, they said the boost would use the same machine.
At this point in life.... I hate pink too. I never hated it until I got my diagnoses. So no pink ribbon for me either. I have a daisy on my lower neck. My daughter has the same one. We did it for her 18th birthday lol. I don't recall it hurting.

Re: tattoos
I saw the tattoo dots on a friend of mine and they were so small as to not be noticeable. Maybe some ROs make them bigger?
I always wanted a tattoo and finally got one at the age of 59. I was thinking of doing it at 60 but ended up sooner. It is two small flowers on my ankle, one for each granddaughter. Haven't had any more grand kids or I would add a flower.
I don't think the rad tattoos will bother me much. I was never into pink either, but my sister sent me a pink tee that says 'attitude is everything' with a small BC ribbon on it and I wear it. I have the coloring that pink looks good on me.
What are boosts and does everyone get them?
If you have it enjoy the beautiful weather this week.

I will be finishing radiation number 13 today....14 left to go after today. I'm going back to work at the office Wednesday for the first time since February, I've been working part-time from home, and I am scared. So far, I have no burns or anything from radiation, with the exception of my left breast turning a bit pink, but I know it's coming, and I hope it does not interfere with me going back to work. I need to go back to work to begin to have some kind of normalcy in my life again.
My hair has finally begun to show signs of life. It started out as "peach fuzz" a couple of weeks ago, but now my normal dark color is starting to come in. I had a breast cancer tumor marker tests a couple of weeks ago, and it was within normal range....thank god.
Has anyone on this board with "olive" color skin been through radiation.? Just wondering how you made out.
-
Cannoli I have olive colored skin and I have not burned (knock on wood) my breast has got dark and is now peeling on the underside. I have zero pain other than zingers and those aren't painful... just weird.
Good luck going back to work!
-
I always thought of pink as a watered down version of red, now I know it's really it's core. I don't mind pink anymore.
-
I will be joining Summer Rads group as of June 7 with my sim and tattoos. Slightly miffed that I can't travel this summer but thankful that my oncotype came back at a 14 so I can head straight to rads with no chemo. Will see my oncologist on the 3rd and will probably start taking the hormone eaters at that time. Hope everyone has a good summer!
-
Hello ladies, just wanted to update you on how quickly radiation side effects can change. 18 hours ago I posted that I had no pain. I must have jinxed myself because I was miserable last night and it just came on suddenly about 10pm! I have an open area under my breast, where skin has came off. I am swollen (my dd's are more like dddd's on the one side) and when my arm brushes the side it just flat out hurts.
I only have 4 more whole breast to go and then I start my boost. I plan on laying in front of a fan today to give it as much air as possible. My understanding is that as quickly as it gets worse, it can start to get better! So there is my hope!
-
hi girls...I am still on a "high" from finishing chemo June 2nd and keep saying, wow...I would be going for treatment on Monday!! And I am not!!
I got my tattoos that are so teeny I thought they would have to do them over! My first rad will be on Monday and my time is at 2:30...I am a morning person and want to get into a routine...coffee...fb/email/bco catch up...walking/pool....popping into my school and organizing my stuff ( been out since January and it was my second home!), etc...then make the afternoon "job" of going to rads...40 minutes to get there but I will plan my shopping in town as I live out in a somewhat "remote" area as we have no shopping centers, malls,...just beach shops and food stores!! So I have an agenda and plan for my days...like when I was working and it feels good to get back to some normalcy after chemo land!!
Jhodro ...I started PT! Thanks for your posts about that...it's a woman's center and the therapists are soooo up on stuff and taught me a lot!! She will also be checking my skin and breast during rads so at least I will have extra attention during this time...I have been blessed with the best care team who are truly concerned and go the extra mile to ease my fears...have a great weekend!! Rosie
-
Rosie, I had my chemo on Mondays also. Finished 4/21. So every Monday after was a little celebration. I had my taxol dd so 2 weeks after when I normally would have gone to chemo we went out to dinner to celebrate. Also took a nice walk by myself and reflected on all I'd been through and appreciated the beauty of the trees, blue sky, green grass, flowers sprouting, breeze in my face etc. this Monday I will be 9 weeks ofc
-
Sunshineinky,
I am so sorry things changed for you so suddenly. I truly hope it is a very temporary change, and it heals quickly. Hopefully, having a bit of a break over this weekend will help. I have 10 regular whole breast left, and, then 4 boosts. How many sessions do you have all together?
-
Cannoli I have 33 treatments total. 25 whole breast and then 8 boost. I'm really hoping when my boost start this coming Friday that the underside of my breast will heal. I was shocked myself at how quickly it happened. My therapist and nurse checked it yesterday, bragged about how good my skin looked because I have seriously never been red at all. It is itching this morning so I'm hoping that's a sign of healing!
Cannoli how many total do you have?
-
sunshineinky
interesting how each RO is a little bit different. I am also getting 33 total but 28 whole breast (including axillary and internal mamm LNs),26 which are also supraclavicular and then 5 boost. so far at the half way point,16 yesterday, skin just a bit pink at inside corner of collarbone and some mild tenderness front edge of axilla. Every morning I dust the underside of the breast and nipple area with cornstarch to try to keep them dry. Definitely seeing some swelling of the breast. The left one is about 1/3 smaller then the Rt but now almost the same size. Not looking forward to the boost since the incision is just below the nipple. Hope you heal quickly.
Lisa, I was a Thursday chemo and every Thur. I still think about the whole cheop experience, 7 weeks PFC now. Just noticed today the my eyebrows are starting to grow back, Gray, not brown like they were. Oh well they match my white/gray head hair which is still too thin on top to go without something on my head.
-
Good morning. I just found out yesterday that I will have 16 regular and 4 boosts for a total of 20. This is much less than I thought. I am very excited about the change. I will find out next week when I get my tattoos my start date.
Hope everyone fees better today.
-
Sunshine: Damn!! I was so hoping you'd get through SE free. I was told I'd have 33 as well, not sure about boost vs. other, but I'll be right behind you. Hope you get some good healing today. I wonder if there's something that you can eat that makes healing faster? Is that just too much wishful thinking?? Ugh.
Rosie: Thrilled to hear you started PT. Mine was with a Lymphedema specialist and I graduated last week.
Now I can go to the same person who does training and I will continue the exercises and she'll continue to add more as I'm ready. With what I'm reading about rads, not sure how much I'll be able to do, but I will pick it up afterward, hopefully. I still have three more Taxol treatments anyway - - so maybe I'm getting ahead of myself.
Hope everyone feels good today. We finally have sun back here in MI, so I'm going to try to soak some in. From under my hat, anyway.
-
Jhondro I thought I was going to slide through too! My daughter is a dietician so I've been heeding her advice and doing no less than 60 grams of protein a day. I like to think that's why I've not had a widespread issue. I've laid naked from the waist up for 2 hours under a fan! The area feels MUCH better. So much so I think I'll now shower and get out of this house! It's a beautiful day here in KY much to pretty to stay indoors!
-
Sunshine, I too was recently diagnosed with an impingement and will get an injection on Monday. My arm really doesn't hurt until I lay down and then the pain is horrible. It also bothers me during treatments which take about 15 minutes. I take 2 Advils before my rads which helps, but I usually have to grit my teeth and bear it. It's music to my ears when the techs say, "all done, you did a good job!"
I am halfway through treatments, 15 out of 30, and so far I've had no skin issues. I've been using Aquaphor and if my skins begins to redden I will use 100% aloe vera.
Hope everyone is doing well.
Ann
-
Ann that is exactly how I described mine. The only time it's painful is when I put it over my head (they modified the way I laid to accommodate it) it's quite painful at night though when I sleep.
I'll be so happy to get a shot! My PCP said that the earliest appointment at the ortho was Aug 6th! I hope I can find someone else to see me sooner! Let me know how the shot goes. I have heard they can be a bit painful.
-
Sunshine: I hope you can find someone to get you in sooner. Given your situation and all you're going through, the least they can do is give you some relief with a shot!! Good luck. And 60 grams of protein?? How are you doing that?
-
Jhondro I drink Premier Protein shakes. 160 calories, 30 grams of protein and 1 gram of sugar. I absolutely love them. I drink one in the morning and one right after my treatment on the way home.
-
Sunshineinky...I hope you are better today! I missed the post on what happened? Did you get an open sore under your breast and was it because it wasn't dry??? Does the skin just break down? I start rads tomorrow...I know how well you were doing...there are so many different things each RO is telling their patients...it's confusing...so far my nurse only said don't use creams until you need to...she did say shower with unscented dove...and nothing on 4 hours before treatment...I will be getting 36 treatments...some will be boosts...is that to the scar??? Also, what is "impingement"?? Sorry so many questions...hope you continue to heal and do well with the rest of treatments...I will remember about the protein!! You are lucky your daughter is a dietician...I want to find one and will ask at my women's center for PT...they are great there!! Rosie
-
Rosie I am better today! I have had zero burn but what I did have was skin that died on the underside of my breast. Now that skin is coming off. I had a bit of pain but now that it's managed (with 800mg of ibuprofren) I'm feeling ok. Do what your RO recommends. Someone said that Rads is a mind game! How correct they are. I have 8 boost and all of those are to the scar. Thankfully I only have 4 whole breast left. I'm hoping that the boost aren't as hard!
My impingement is from a shoulder injury back in February. I reached into the backseat of the car and picked up my too heavy purse and something popped. Before I could get anything done I had my BC diagnosis then after surgery it's been much worse.
Anyhow good luck tomorrow. You'll be surprised at how quick, easy and painless it really is!
-
I have to say my stress level went down considerably. My update after BS and ONC doctor appmts is ER &PR negative means no tamoxifen tratments and no chemo!!!!! I am elated! my BS said margins were good 2mm and DCIS and non-invasive! SNB was negative. My next appmt is 6/24 with RO consult. And then get my treatment plan. So should I buy some of the stuff before so I'm preparsd, like Aloe, Dove soap, Aquaphor, Calif Baby? Do you place someting over your breast and bra (like a cloth??) We have a pool and it sounds like that is a good thing during tratments for exercise and relaxation. Also ONC says new diet for bc is mediterrian diet, no dairy, red meat like once a month and only grassfed ( my parents raise beef, so that is easy), only range free chicken (avoid anything w possibility of hormones). Makes sense. Anyone else eat this Mediterrian diet? Sounds fine to me but loosing dairy will be my biggest challenge!
Sunshineinky- I hope your SE's have diminished and the fan sounds like a good idea. Even before bc I always had to watch for rash and used powder to help. sounds like cornstarch may be it now. I have 2 scars on breast. 1 under aerola/bottom and 1 on bottom where breast ends on chest wall. I will have to be careful w irritation.
Well talk to all you soon!
-
Sunshine, glad to hear it's better today! Hope the rest go smoothly!!
-
Hey mripp I actually bought cornstarch and used it to stay dry. My rad therapist recommended it and it helped tremendously!
Jhondro.... I'm already dreading tomorrow. I'm gonna have to drag out the big girl panties and ibuprofren to just get there!
-
Sunshine Glad to hear you are feeling better. Protein shakes are great I use those too.
mripp, I like the Mediterranean Diet, except they dairy, ugh I love some of my dairy.
My dd just started working at Sprouts. So I am looking forward to her discount to buy good meat.
I would wait and see what you RO tells you is ok to use, well it will probably be the nurse. I do use a cloth under my bra, I used a old cotton tee shirt that I tore up. My RO said some girls use a tank under their bras. After I put my Aloe on I cover it so the bra doesn't rub. Some Dr.s don't use anything, but personally I will always use my Aloe, and a good cream. They may even give you some to start. Mine gave me a big bottle of Aloe. And some samples of Aquaphor. I like my emu oil that is mostly aloe. Fruit of the Earth is the one they gave me, it has no dyes or alcohol. I think Walmart carries it. Also, I think a front closing sports bra is great. You can get right to it if you need to put lotion on. Put the Aloe in the frig when you start to heat up it feels sooooo good. I have 7 whole and 5 boosts left and I just have a pink "tan". But Everyone reacts differently. And it's not over yet. Oh my nurse just said to use a gentle soap. I just use an organic one. I did buy a crystal deodorant which really works. Just don't use before your treatment.
-
Sunshine: I'll be thinking of you…it's rough. I'm still bitching about finding a decent bra (wireless) from the surgeries and all that. I'll stop right now. Best of luck tomorrow and this week.
-
Sunshine-I am so sorry you had some issues! I am glad to hear they seem to be improving already.
I am done with 8 out of 33 treatments and already a little red and swollen but really hopeful that might be it! (Fingers crossed)
Mripp - I have not heard of following the Mediterranean diet yet but I do believe that is an over all very healthy diet so I can understand why it would be recommended. My personal opinion would be to not buy anything in advance because there are so many different stories that I have read on these boards and I don't know why the doctors recommend different things but I have to believe there is a reason. My RO had told me to only use miaderm and dove soap and absolutely nothing else. Wait to hear what they recommend and why and then go on your shopping trip.
Dgdm - glad to hear your treatments will be better than expected!
Hugs to all!! Hoping for a good week!
