Thyroid has nodules
Has anyone else had a problem with your thyroid? I was at a doctor for a urinary tract infection, and I asked her to check my thyroid. I have a very thin neck and the thyroid seems to be protruding. She said it did seem to be swollen and that I should get a scan. I called my oncologist and got an ultrasound. I don't have the results yet, but the technician said my thyroid is very small on the right side with one nodule and is larger on the left side with several nodules.

Yes, mimiof4, I have a problem with my thyroid. Actually, my surgery to remove the thyroid is tomorrow morning. One of my initial CT or MRI's for breast cancer in August of 2013 showed a 1.5cm nodule on my thyroid. A biopsy was recommended but all of my doctors said that the breast cancer should be addressed first and then the thyroid could be biopsied. Long story short, the biopsy done in May came back positive for papillary cancer. Good news - totally unrelated to the breast cancer. Why I was totally bummed about this, I told myself that this was no where near as serious as the breast cancer for which I have completed treatment.
Hope your nodules turn out benign. Most are.
Keep us informed.

Hi
add me to the thyroid club. Having a biopsy tomorrow based on a lung ct that showed 3 nodules….I am pretty freaked out because they also found a teeny nodule on my lung--seeing a pulmonologist tomorrow--never had a thyroid problem-- I am driving myself crazy-even though I know rationally over 90% of these are benign…. let's stay in touch--good luck. Keeping fingers crossed.

benign thyroid nodules - extremely common
-
I too have thyroid nodules that were found incidentally prior to my breast cancer dx. Endocrinologist is monitoring closely now, especially after having radiation. He is very reassuring that this is much less a problem than bc and should we ever find a cancerous nodule, he will take care of everything. He is very sweet and trying to take any further worries away. My research does support his claims though. Thyroid cancer is very treatable in most cases and most nodules are not cancerous. Thyroid nodules are very common. Take care

I love you guys.... I need reassurance all the time--
seeing pulmonologist tomorrow for lung nodule (also often benign)
biopsy on thyroid on Thursday--- hope for results next week--
then make plans (or maybe not!!!!!)
TB I do agree that the numbers are on my side--- will get to an endo as well for monitoring or surgery. I have a cousin who is a pulmonologist-- emailed me this morning about the lung--said it was so common to have lung nodules-- mostly benign--really helped me start my day well.......
You know, I really wanted to be followed closely after bc, but now I am not so sure..... but my cousin did say that the only mistake I could make would be to not follow up---so I am putting on my big girl pants and getting down there....
-
I just sent up a prayer for you, momand2kids. Keep us posted about how you are doing. It sounds like you have some really good doctors, and yes, statistics are definitely on our side!
-
Thinking of you Momof3kids!

My PET scan after I finished chemo showed the left side of my thyroid was enlarged so had ultrasound= nodules. I was so worried, biopsy on 2 nodules was benign! It is scary after what we've been through but most are benign
-
OK ladies-- husband will pick me up in 15 minutes- and we are off to the pulmonologist-- where I hope to hear "it's nothing" but I suspect the options could range from "watch and wait", PET, biopsy or surgery to be sure..... I have my notebook, my questions, my voice recorder--- I think I am ready--have a little ativan in my pocket in case things don't go well, but I think things will be ok----Whatever he says, I will seriously consider. My cousin in law who is a pulmonologist wrote to me this morning to reassure me that almost all lung nodules are benign, especially the small ones... and mine is tiny. He also said "the only mistake you could make is not following up"..... and I know he is right--so big girl pants on and I am off.....
will post later.
thanks

Thinking of you ! Good luck and let us know.

Here's hoping things turned out well! -
Hi all
well, on the lung issue- he felt it was nothing--too small to biopsy, too small to take out, too small for a PET.... so I go back in August and we will re-scan and see if there is any growth--- if not, back again in 3 months--for 2 years.... if there is a growth, we will take it right out.... I think this is really the only way and I was glad to hear him say that it did not look suspicious and that my lungs were fine and I was perfectly healthy---- good air, etc. So he really thought it was really a nodule..... I am going with that.
Had the thyroid biopsy this morning-- he was lovely--told me 95% of these things are benign---I hope he is right in my case..... will know next week.
thanks for the prayers-- I need them!
-
Yay!!!
-
thanks shoppy--- I am 50% relieved- I was very concerned about the lung, but he says I am completely healthy and this is very likely nothing. Now the wait on the thyroid--I so hope it is benign--but hoping for best, preparing for worst..... but I like the odds 95%......

I have had a noduled thyroid since I was in my twenties. I'm now in my sixties.
The first time it was treated, they removed half my thyroid, even through they didn't suspect cancer. That was just the way they did things then.
Thirty years later, I was under the care of an endocrinologist after the remaining half started to grow. They tried giving me a low-dose of thyroid medication to see if it would go down. When it didn't, I stopped the medication (really, who needs to take something that isn't working?)
A year and a half ago, I went to another endo to get it checked out again. He took a few physical biopsies which came back negative. I'm not having any treatment now...just living with a slight swelling in my throat. The endo said at some point it might push on my throat too much and make swallowing difficult. That's the only point I will have to do something about it.
I hope your thyroid trouble is as innocuous as mine.
-
Thanks Nancy-this is so helpful and encouraging. My sister also had half of her thyroid out and like you, it is fine. It is good to hear about the slight swelling-- I feel a little of that and of course have diagnosed myself with something awful.. Plus the biopsy made my throat a little tender-- I am wearing myself out with this... The odds are in my favor-- trying to just continually convince myself that things will be ok. I appreciate you writing in to me.. I see that you are even farther out on BC than me--congrautlationsl!!!

I have had thyroid nodules (3) for 10 years now. Thyroid levels are all normal. One nodule is larger than the others, and is biopsied about every 2 years. I go every 6 months to have them checked and measured for size...done with ultrasound. No problems otherwise.
-
thanks Jacee-- makes me feel better so many people have these and they are benign.... keeping fingers crossed. Thanks for writing in. I greatly appreciate the reassurance

Hi Mimiof4,
I am having a biopsy of my thyroid in two days. I have had several scares along the journey. I am in rads now and they have found spots on my lungs, adrenal gland and now the thyroid. My lungs spots were benign. The nodule on the adrenal has not been dealt with yet. I understand your concern. I am concerned for the thyroid issue as well. I am sure you probably know that the odds are in our favor of not being anything serious. Let's hold on to that hope. I hope all of you ladies dealing with this thyroid issue will have a good result. Most thyroid cancer is very treatable and after what we have already gone through with bc we can handle this. Right???? We are strong and we will handle this obstacle just as we have faced all of our other challenges!!!!
Hang in there.Bandwoman1234

Just chiming in here with more reassurance. In 2007 ( pre-BC ) CT scans found multiple nodules on my thyroid, multiple ( over 10 ) lung nodules and an adrenal tumor. Thyroid biopsied--benign; adrenal biopsied--benign, lung nodules unchanged for 7 years. Docs said the frequency of CT scanning has made these findings really common and resulted in a lot of testing and rescanning. Only my adrenal is still monitored in case it suddenly decides to pump out extra hormones. So the odds are really in your favor.
-
Thanks ladies-- I think I am getting to an ok place with this, since I will likely have to wait another 10 days for the pathology--- your stories really give me great hope for this.... I am taking deep breaths, focusing on work, kids, etc. Did a couple of swims this weekend to see how my lungs were working and they seem just fine!!!
will be back I am sure for more reassurance, but this is so helpful..
Thank you so much. I really appreciate this community.

Hi Marie,
How did your surgery go? I couldn't help but see that we are not too far away from each other. I sure hope you are on the mend and that everything went smoothly and successfully. Let us know how you are doing when you are up to it.

good luck with your biopsy-- I think it is today? doesn't take too long-- I did go to work right after- but I have noticed the site is tender and a little black and blue--- thinking good thoughts for you!!!!
-

I should also add that I agree- this is less of a worry than the bc... my friend Mary did all the research and the radiologist even said'95% of these are benign--and Mary's research backed that up. So, you go with good karma..... looking forward to hearing from you.

Ladies
the doc called and I missed her--called her back twice-but she was with patients.... now her office is closed. I am so worn out from the anxiety--- she has sometimes called me after hours-but in some ways, I would rather just wait now until tomorrow....I am of course, assuming that because she did not say "it's benign" that there is something I don't want to hear..... which I realize is a crazy assumption--but it is what it is.....
thanks
-
ladies
turns out it is papillary thyroid cancer-- sounds like it is eminently treatable.. staring the process today of setting up appointments, etc. I am so scared and sad about this. I know life is not fair, but this is ridiculous.
thanks
-
Hugs to you!
-
Thinking of you! You will get through this!

I am so sorry to hear this. Not the news you were hoping for. A good thing about having bc is it makes us very aware of our bodies and we respond to things going on physically with much more urgency. Hopefully your diligence pays off. Good to hear they are dealing with it quickly. Please know we are here for you. Sending hugs!
