Port question

Met with oncology nurse today, discussed the game plan.  I am getting a port placed on Saturday, starting 3 year regimen on Monday.  I explained how much I hated the port and I want this new one out ASAP when I am done with treatment.  She told me I will be living with this damn thing for a much longer time than I expected.  This is my 2nd time with chemo and stuff.  Anyone have a clue as to how long the port should stay in afterwards?

    basia,

How long a port stays in is up to you and your mo. There is no time limit as long as it's regularly maintained (flushed). What did you hate about your first port? Size? placement? You may be able to work these things out if you speak with the surgeon. I have a very small port, placed inconspicuously. I hardly notice it and neither does anyone else.
