Port placed first day of chemo?

My surgeon wants to place port same day I start chemo. Is this normal? I assumed I would be sedated for placement? Is it ok to get chemo while still have anesthesia meds in my system.

    Yes it is normal. Placing the port is a very short surgery. You will be under sedation but it is a quick outpatient procedure. By having chemo the same day the surgeon will leave your port accessed for your treatment center. It's pretty standard.

    The surgeon will leave your port accessed following the insertion since you'll be getting chemo right away.  The sedation for insertion isn't apt to put you out.  It makes you care less what they are doing to you.  I was fully conscious and chatting the whole time.  There will be a brief recovery/rest and then you'll be good to go.  No chemo going in to the veins in your arm is a good thing.  This should work out just fine for you but like anything unknown, it's scary.  Good luck.

    There is no one absolute 'schedule' for port implantation.  In my case, mine was the morning before first infusion.  I was completely 'knocked out' in the hospital OR.  I was told that my Chemo Dr does not like to do the first infusion on the same day as different people react differently to the anestheia and some will have nausea after it so he doesn't like the idea of there being a potential for nausea to deal with even before the chemo starts.

    Over time, I would say that most I've read of had implant the day before, followed next by those on the same day, with a few done several days before, a very few will get a  port after first infusion and some never get one.

    Most I have read of said they were either totally 'knocked out' or had 'twlight sedation'.

    There is no 'One Size Fits All' when it comes to what our TX plans are - we are all different, our DX is not exactly the same and our Drs are not the same with each havong their own idea as to what is the best plan for us.

    My port was placed the day before chemo. I was glad not to have both on the same day. I was not allowed to eat after midnight the night before the port placement. The pain after surgery was high enough that I had to take Norco that night to fall asleep and again to stay asleep all night. All that plus the chemo meds seems like a lot to put into your body on one day.
