Starting Chemo in March 2014

Also, I have seen ladies here post before about having one nodule and chemo kicking it's ass so stay positive! There's lots of chemos you can do!! Chin up girl and go pour yourself a much deserved glass of wine!
-
Sinsin and jmg, thinking of you both, I pray it's just another horrible scare and everything comes back negative. So sorry to hear you're both going through this.
-
Jen- I finished AC on 4/24 and still had lashes and brows. I had Taxol #1 on 5/19 (had a delay in starting Taxol/Herceptin/Pertuzamab protocol after AC due to a respiratory infection with fever which prevented me from starting when I should have (5/13).) Anyway, I started to notice eyebrow thinning in between AC and and Taxol #1. Since Taxol #1, I've started to notice serious thinning of eyebrows (mine were light to begin with it so it makes it even worse but without using an eyebrow pencil, it looks like I have almost nothing) and I've also started losing bottom eyelashes. Top lashes seem to still be in tact but I've started to notice one or two falling out when I put on mascara, so I know its only a matter of time. Frustrating.
On a more positive note- my stepmom went through breast cancer several years ago (same protocol as me-AC, Taxol) and she lost all her eyelashes but not her eyebrows. So, everyone is different! Maybe you won't lose yours. Fingers crossed for you!
-
thanks, CMP! Where are you in nj? (Have we had this discussion already? LOL!)
-
Jen- I don't think so. I've just joined these boards. I'm in Short Hills. Where are you?
-
I'm in Basking Ridge. Where are you being treated? I'm at Morristown.
-
I've lost most of my eyelashes now and don't bother trying to put mascara on the remaining ones as it will just highlight the gaps. My eyebrows were hanging in just fine till in between the FEC third round and the start of my taxotere. They are now at probably a third of what they were, they still look reasonable as I had super thick eyebrows, but I definitely notice they are a lot thinner and have gaps in there.
-
Jen- I'm at MSKCC in Basking Ridge. Probably not far from you! Basking Ridge is a beautiful area.
-
Very close indeed! I plan to do radiation there since its every day and less than five miles from me. You are in good hands!
-
Well, I just got the results from bone scan and I'm clean. Thank God! I can't even begin to describe the amount of anxiety I had over this and how relieved I am but I know you ladies understand. I'm celebrating with a glass of champagne tonight!
I hope all of you ladies are doing well and have little side effects! Jmg, I hope your scans go just as well and that chemo kicks that nodules ass!
-
Great news, Sinsin!
I finished Taxol today, yeah! I start AC on June 12.
-
Yeah, Alli!! I hope you have minimal side effects with AC and it goes smoothly for you! And thanks! I had SO much anxiety over that scan. Ugh!
-
Oh, sinsin, I am SO HAPPY for you! Terrific news! Definitely something to celebrate!
xrayalli, I am so glad you are also done with another phase!! :-)
kiwilady, my brows and lashes sound like they're about in the same shape as yours. They also look like they're a lighter color, if that's possible, but maybe it's just my imagination. I'm wondering if they'll all fall out still. I gave up on the mascara, too.
I go back to MO on the 12th. She will discuss lung/ any other scan then, I guess. I think the fact that I cried the whole time I was there yesterday really threw her off. That'll be three months since the other CT. Also will start arimidex then. I'm not looking up anymore about that drug!. Today is the first day I didn't cry all day; had to go to nursing home to move my mom out of the horrible place into a better one, which was successful. I swear, if my lung node is nothing, I will get down on my knees and be so happy I won't know what to do. I really am praying for a chance to move to Texas and be with my sweetie for some happy years.
-
Hang in there Jmg! Just take it one day at a time. It's what I do. I just put one foot in front of the other and follow what I call, the Nemo Mantra, "Just keep swimming!" But IF that nodule is cancer, I have seen a woman post that she was NED after having one and if she can do it, so can you!
-
Sinsin- great news! Congratulations!
Alli- good luck with AC. Wishing you minimal SE's!
Hope everyone has a good weekend!
-
Great news Sinsin! JMG sending positive thoughts your way for the scan. -
Hi Everybody-
Was just reading about the lung nodule discussion. Jmg- I have 2 nodules that were discovered on a chest/abd/pelvis CT, that was a workup for my breast cancer diagnosis. They're small and both on the right lung, and my breast cancer is on the right, and I've never been a smoker. But I was told not to worry, it was just an incidental finding. I needed more convincing, and my MO explained it's likely a certain percentage of the population have these nodules anyway, we just don't have contrast-enchanced views of everybody's chest to know. Also, these nodules were not "lit up" on my PET scan, so they don't seem to be active, or dividing rapidly. I don't remember if the MO was going to follow up with another CT of the right lung at some point down the road.. I'm hoping it's not an issue at all. So, did you get a PET scan? How were the nodules picked up?
Also, anyone have any tricks to combat throbbing leg, feet and hand pain? It's accompanied by roaming muscle cramps that start and stop. It's not so much burning though, but I bet this is still in the neuropathy specturm. Darn- I thought it would come on gradually, but 2 days after my first Taxol infusion and WHAM! Super ouchy.
-
Thanks for the info, TxPlanner! That gives me some hope! I did not have a PET scan, as nothing was in my lymph nodes initially; I am not sure if she's going to order that or another CT scan to see if the nodule's gotten bigger in three months. But I am happy to hear that information; thank you for the encouragement. I'm sorry I can't help you with your other issue; I have not had that problem! Have a good night!
-
Just chiming in on the lung nodule discussion, I also had the incidental finding of a very small left lung nodule when I had a chest/abdomen/pelvis CT. I was freaked at first, even working in radiology I knew this was probably fine, but when it is found on yourself you have a right to get freaked! I was told I need a one year follow up CT to check for size change. I never had a Pet CT.
TxPlanner-I have throbbing legs from restless legs syndrome is yours like that? Only relief is sleep for me. My fingers throb from the neuropathy so you may be on the right track, unfortunately, in thinking you are starting with that lovely side effect.
-
tx planner... Maybe ask about supplements. They say B6 And B12
-
txplanner, im taking b-6 and glutamine. Ive only had three treatments so far but so far im good.
-
Thanks for the suggestions. Glutamine is a powder, right? And how much do you take of both the glutamine and the B6, and/or B12?
Someone also told me the Cymbalta and Lyrica were two prescription meds that help with neuropathy- has anyone had experience with either of those? I'll ask my doctor on Monday but was just wondering what the gallery knows!
And, another option that was mentioned was cutting back on the dose of Taxol they're giving me. That's my favorite one- cut it way back. Of course, I don't want the cancer cells to survive, but then again, I kind of want the unwitting host (that would be ME..) to be alive when all is said and done!
-
you could go from dose dense to weekly, which probably has less neuropathy. Studies are being dine with alpha lipoic acid, 400 mg twice a day, and glutamine is cheap, on line, but controversial in that it may protect cancer cells, but no one really knows. 5-10 mg up to 3 x a day. On second dose dense paclitaxel- have flu like body aches and skin sensitivity, and fatigue.

hello all. Been too busy to respond lately, so thought I'd post an update. As some may recall, my wife was having real problems the first 3-4 days after her chemo round, and then would gradually come back to normal over 8-10 days. Happy to report that her last two rounds went much better. They changed her anti nausea meds to a combo of emend, Aloxi and stemetil, and the result has been quite dramatic. Wife got her treatment Friday, but she was still able to go for a 4 mile walk on Saturday, and another 45 minute hike today. Impossible with her initial 3 rounds, as she'd have been bed ridden for 2-3 days.
We just returned from a trip to Toronto with our 4 kids. Wonderland 6 times, meal atop CN Tower, Niagara Falls for 2 days and lots of shopping. One big hole in my wallet
. We went to an indoor water park in NF, and wife was sliding down the slides with the kids, looking like Axel Rose gone crazy. We bought her an Amoena swim suit and she has the prosthetic to match her other boob, so she looks great. Don't even know if people were staring at my bandana lady or not, and to be honest, my kids and myself are not really arsed, nor aware anything is amiss. It is what it is. Friggin cancer. Life does not stop. There were a couple of Muslim ladies in the wave pool in full garb (head to toe) so who really cares?
Wife's started getting flushes and sweats, and is worried it is the onset of menopause. Looked like it could be. I know that whole scenario bothers her as she is still just 40. I tell her it's all about getting thru the shit, and coming out the other side. We can worry about small stuff later. She claims she's put on 10 lbs but she still looks great to me. My trooper.
I hope you are all coping well, and getting thru this. 1 more chemo round to go for us - wooohoooo! 25 days of rads in July, then she can watch her hair grow back. New set of boobs next year. Wooohoooo for me I guess. To be honest, she doesn't have to get work done on them, if it means more hospital and hassle. I know she wants to feel as normal as any woman would at the end of all this.
Take care everyone. Hope you are all well.

WifeWBC, So nice to see this photo! Thanks for sharing; I'm glad things have gone better for her!! :-) It's great that she's done so well lately and I wish her continued success with her last treatment!
-
WifeWBC,
Your family is beautiful!!!! So glad to hear your wife is doing better. I don't get too sick but get so tired that I can't do much. I walk up a flight of stairs and my heart rate goes up to 120-130's. I'm very impressed that she can walk 4 miles! I have 2 more rounds, she's 1 week ahead of me, then more surgery to clean up the margins. It will be interesting to see if the cancer is all dead (I hope I hope I hope) Hope the last one goes as well for her.
-
WifeWBC, so glad to hear that she's doing better!! Hang in there in the menopause! Chemo put me into menopause and I'm only 34 and I have terrible hot flashes, flushing, and night sweats! Last night I woke up shivering and freezing because I was soaking wet, my pjs were soaking wet, and my side of the bed was soaking wet from night sweats. It sucks but I can tough it out. It helps if I stay hydrated. So good luck to her! There's a chance that she may come out of menopause when she's done.
-
Sinsin - and anyone else having those horrible sweats where you wake up freezing and drenched. I was having those also - combo of chemo and menopause and it was/is horrible. I had to get up and change my PJ's and put a towel on the bed cause the sheets were soaked and someone suggested wicking PJ's. I found some online but didn't order them cause I remember seeing wicking danskin exercise clothing at Walmart. I went and picked up a pair of shorts and a top and it made a world of difference. It moves the moisture away from your body so that it evaporates and doesn't soak your cloths - so you stay dry therefore no freezing shivers.
This is the type of thing I bought but it was shorts and a top - they have the word wicking on the labels - it is a folded label - some of the danskins are not wicking - so read the label, the wicking ones are about 6 bucks a piece. I now own 4 sets and wear them every night and my sleep is so much better.
-
linda, thanks so much for info! I wasn't even aware of clothes like that! That's awesome! I'll certainly be looking right away into those! Thanks!
