Thyroid freak out...
So,
I have 3 nodules on my thyroid--one is over the 1cm size
recommended for biopsy so I am having that done on 6/5. My thyroid
function is fine. I just read the ultrasound report and two words
jumped out "microcalcifications" and "suspicious mass". All the data on
thyroid nodules seem to be in my favor (95% are benign) but I am a
little freaked out now that I have read that. I know, I know better---
radiologists have to write everything down, but I just don't want to
have cancer again (who does?)... I don't think I could bear it.....
Trying
to pull myself together--reminding myself that hopefully, even at its
worst, it is just removal of the thyroid (although I would prefer to
keep it!). But, my mental gymnastics definitely are dragging me
down---- although the terror is significantly less than it was during my
bc diagnostic phase.
Please say some prayers for benign findings!
thanks

You might want to make sure the biopsies are looked at by a pathologist who specializes in thyroid nodules. My biopsy came back "indeterminate" from a regular lab. So after another biopsy, it was sent to a lab who actually does genetic testing on thyroid nodules. Benign. The genetic testing wasn't even necessary. There are several labs in the country that do this. It saved me an unnecessary thyroidectomy. Good luck.

Iammommy
thanks so much for the tip--- how do I find out? I am in Boston and it will likely go to a lab here connected with the hosptial.. Did you have your second biopsy with a different radiologist? How did you figure that out?
thanks

Yes. Second biopsy was with a different pathologist. My ENT who did both biopsies wanted the second one sent out for dna testing since so many indeterminate results are actually benign. The dna testing is actually free if your insurance doesn't cover it. My second results were absolutely benign so I never got to the dna testing stage. It only goes for dna testing if the results are indeterminate or malignant.Tell your doc u want the dna testing if he doesn't suggest it. It was CBL Pathology in Rye Brook, NY. It might save you an unnecessary surgery. Does this help? I still get follow up ultrasounds to make sure the nodules aren't growing since a teeny number of benign nodules can later be malignant.

Mommy
this is very helpful--I don't yet have an ENT or an endocrinologist--figured I would just wait until I get results--- but I may be back in touch with you about this if the results are inconclusive, which I hear they can often be.... I do want to hang on to the thyroid if at all possible. will keep you posted. thanks so much

I'm confused then. Who is doing the biopsy?
-
this time last year, before BC diagnosis I had several nodules found on my thyroid from a MRI looking at my cervical spine. The biopsies came back as indeterminate with hurtle cells. Unfortunately, the only conclusive way to determine if the nodules were benign was to have them removed which meant thyroidectomy since they were so big. Fortunately they were benign but I am now on synthroid for life. My doctor at the time said that most thyroid cancers are fully curable, unlike BC, that put my mind at ease.
Having said that, the recovery was easy and I have had no issues with regulating my thyroid. I was concerned about it with chemo but it has been a non-event.
Wishing you a positive result.

Hi
biopsy being done by a radiologist recommended by my pcp-- he specializes in fine needle biopsies---- she is pretty picky, so I have faith in this choice--- I will get an endo once i have the results--have a few names now of local people who are good.....

Ok. Please keep us posted on the results. Wishing only good things!
