Tom Joad with J. Christopher Stevens

    2 hrs Edited

A letter from the family of Ambassador J. Chris Stevens:

Chris Stevens died in the service of his country. He died doing what he
loved most -- working to build bridges of understanding and mutual
respect between the people of the United States and the people of the
    Middle East and North Africa.

He was loved by many more Libyans
than those who hated him for being an American. A few dozen fanatics
penetrated his compound. More than 30,000 people in Benghazi
demonstrated in protest over his death.

    Chris was successful
because he embodied the traits that have always endeared America to the
world -- a commitment to democratic principles, and respect for others,
regardless of race, religion or culture. Chris regarded and liked each
person he met as an individual. He respected their views, whether or not
    he agreed.

One of his friends told us a tale that reflects his
success on a small scale. Picnicking in the Libyan countryside, they met
a local family. Chris immediately greeted them and suggested that they
be photographed together. The young son of the patriarch of the family,
suspicious and negative toward Americans, refused to participate. So
Chris continued chatting with the others. When it was time to leave, the
initially suspicious son presented Chris with a bouquet of
flowers."This is because you were so respectful to my father," he said.

Chris was not willing to be the kind of diplomat who would strut around
in fortified compounds. He amazed and impressed the Libyans by walking
the streets with the lightest of escorts, sitting in sidewalk cafes,
chatting with passers-by. There was a risk to being accessible. He knew
    it, and he accepted it.

What Chris never would have accepted was
the idea that his death would be used for political purposes. There were
security shortcomings, no doubt. Both internal and outside
investigations have identified and publicly disclosed them. Steps are
being taken to prevent their reoccurrence.

    Chris would not have
wanted to be remembered as a victim. Chris knew, and accepted, that he
was working under dangerous circumstances. He did so -- just as so many
of our diplomatic and development professionals do every day -- because
he believed the work was vitally important. He would have wanted the
critical work he was doing to build bridges of mutual understanding and
respect -- the kind of work that made him literally thousands of friends
and admirers across the broader Middle East -- to continue.

    So
rather than engage in endless recriminations, his family is working to
continue building the bridges he so successfully began.

    One year
ago this week, in response to a tremendous outpouring of support from
around the world, we launched the J. Christopher Stevens Fund. The
mission of the Fund is to support activities that build bridges between
the people of the United States and those of the broader Middle East.
This was the mission to which Chris dedicated his life.

    We are
grateful for each contribution received – from friends and family, from
the Government of Libya, and from people near and far moved by Chris and
    his story.
In the coming weeks and months, we will launch a number
of innovative programs and initiatives. The focus of our activity is on
young people, both here in America and across the Middle East and North
    Africa.

Chris served in the Peace Corps in Morocco, and his death
was felt acutely by the Peace Corps family. Last year, in response to
numerous queries from returned Peace Corps Volunteers during Peace Corps
Week, we encouraged returned volunteers to fan out across America and
speak with youth about their experiences abroad. We are now working with
the Peace Corps to expand their reach into schools and communities
    across this country.

The Center for Middle Eastern Studies at
the University of California, Berkeley, where Chris studied as an
undergraduate, announced on Sept 11 the Ambassador J. Christopher
Stevens Memorial Fund for Middle Eastern Studies, endowed by the J.
Christopher Stevens Fund. Our purpose is to encourage and inspire
students in Middle Eastern and North African scholarship.

    In
Piedmont, CA, where Chris spent his teen years, the Piedmont Unified
School District Board of Education has voted to name the Piedmont High
library the Ambassador Christopher Stevens Memorial Library. Chris was
inspired by the Piedmont High School motto “Achieve the Honorable”.

Later this fall, together with a coalition of public and private
partners, we will launch the J. Christopher Stevens Virtual Exchange
Initiative. This initiative will embrace the power of technology to fuel
the largest ever increase in people-to-people exchanges between the
United States and the broader Middle East, vastly increasing the number
and diversity of youth who have a meaningful cross-cultural experience
as part of their formative education, and reaching over one million
    youth by 2020.

Later this year, the University of California’s
Hastings College of the Law, from which Chris graduated in 1989, will
host the Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens Symposium. The event will
emphasize law and public policy as used in practice to advance global
understanding and peace, principles to which Chris was committed.

There have been more awards bestowed, and honors given, in Chris’
memory than we could have ever thought possible. But as we’ve said
before, we have received letters from thousands of people all over the
world who were touched by Chris’ example. His openness touched a chord
    in their hearts.

Chris would have wanted to be remembered for that.

    Thank you.

    The Family of Chris Stevens
    --------------

REMEMBER: Chris's family sent this letter to the House Oversight
Committee on Benghazi LAST YEAR. This is NOT NEWS, or in response to the
latest, greatest, 'finally we'll get the answers these victims deserve'
farce currently being led by House Representative Trey Gowdy (R-SC).

For conservatives, this is the pointy end of the stick to fend off a
potential Clinton presidential campaign. Since she was the Secretary of
State at the time, it's okay to denigrate her service and refer to her
    as "Killary." Right?

ALL BENGHAZI, ALL THE TIME is what
conservatives have decided is the right 'emotional trigger' to make
certain their base remains angry and engaged — just as the Bush White
House used the specter of "mushroom clouds" as an emotionally charged
"trigger" to sell the American people on the wisdom of a boots on the
    ground invasion of Iraq.

Six investigations into Benghazi so far
(and millions upon millions of dollars and man hours wasted) — and the
best the House and Senate Teapublicans have is: "internal emails now
show conclusively that the White House staff was concerned about
    politics. Yes, and …?

service and continue his work to build bridges between people, please

    Teapublicans = sad, sorry bunch.

    Jackie

p.s.  Blue, glad you put that in.  It is refreshing to read of people who actually love their country and NEVER mocked it, with the phoniness of "investigation" for political ends.

A little footnote.  After getting my work done this a.m. refilling my gas tank, I headed to Mt. Vernon ( satellite V.A. Dr.'s office ) to get my test results.  All was fine.  A couple of numbers could have been better but still within normal range.  Dh was in the car and afterwards I took him back to Marion V.A.  Got him home last  night and his symptoms ( though abated for a short while )  started coming back.  He was miserable this a.m. so I insisted he come with me and we would get to Marion and see if we couldn't get to the bottom of things.  Though he has no "stones" his gall bladder is inflamed.  Some other thing ( similar to a stone ) did plug something.  So after several hours and tests, he was admitted.  Will likely have to stay a couple of days.  I'm manning the fort here alone.  Have done it before so its ok.  Will be glad when I have him back home here though.

Jackie. A person can have an acalculus inflammation of the gall bladder.  Just means no stones.  But they can do laparoscopic surgery.  It works and people feel one hell of a lot better.   Gallbladder disease has been compared to heart attacks, by those who have experienced both, and childbirth, ditto.  The people who have experienced both say gall bladder disease is worse.  My best wishes for good medication to control your DHs pain and nausea and everything else.  And I also hope you can sleep knowing he is in good hands.

    Hi Everybody!

Hope everyone is enjoying the holiday weekend.  It's been quiet here today, so hopefully y'all are spending time with family and friends.

I've been busy mowing ... and now getting ready to wash the car.  Tim will be home tomorrow and it will be nice to have all the chores done.

Jackie ... I hope your DH is okay.  Gall bladder disease sounds really painful.  I know how you feel about being home alone ... sometimes I get scared at night.  But I stay busy so I don't get too lonely.

Kay ... So nice to see you!  How's your garden coming along?

    hugs,

Blue, thank you for posting that letter. Hadn't read or heard of it b4.  Cried reading it.  SO TRUE about their son never wanting this to be made into a "political issue."  I never knew him, but have friends who did, and they say he would be the LAST person to turn this tragedy into a political game.  SO sad.

Jackie - I had my gall bladder out 6 months after finishing chemotherapy, hope your DH feels as good as I did, and still do without it! Also gald your numbers were good.

rain, more rain, and did I mention, rain.  Still very cool, in the low 60's during day, way down into low 40s at night.  Surprising for us at this time of year.

Hope all are having a good holiday weekend, and joining in thanking ALL for their service.

Hoping all are relaxing and refreshing on this Memorial Day weekend.

Blue - so sorry I missed your birthday.  Hope it was a truly wonderful and memorable event.  Thank-you for posting that letter.  It was good to read something good about the sadness that happened in Benghazi.

Jackie - I hope your husband is soon feeling much better.  I've never had gall bladder problems, but have heard that it is miserable.  Your day yesterday(?) sounded much too long and energy sapping.  Remember that in the midst of taking care of everyone (and everything) else, that you kinda need to take care of yourself as well....

Yorkie - glad to see you.  You must be looking forward to your upcoming travels.

Kam - Quinn sounds so adorable.

Bren - I hope you find a job soon.  They've finally filled my old job, so they won't be calling me in to help them out anymore.  I guess I kinda have mixed feelings about that, as the occasional call-in provided some money that really came in handy - but at the same time, well, it was just weird going back there.  I think I said that I put my name in at a contract place - well, they've called me to do some work, but it doesn't sound (to me) like what they want is exactly what I do/did - I'm going to meet with them on Tuesday (I think) and discuss the situation.

I've been busy doing not too sure what.  Today I sanded off some wood, as I am going to rebuild a garden bench.  Once I finish the project I'll post some pictures (if it doesn't look too lame).  :)  Other than that I've been gardening, and realized that my mind was starting to bite off more than my body could chew, so I wrote myself a note to FIRST fix up what I can before I start tearing up parts of the yard to add more plants.  I really badly want to put in a fountain, but that will definitely not be a this year project.  I've got too much to do this year already!!  I've also got my sewing machine out and am at least thinking about chewing into the rather huge amount of fabric I've accumulated over the years.  I tend to purchase silk by the bolt, so am currently making myself a few new pairs of silk pants - after they are complete I will probably dye one pair (the fabric is off-white silk broadcloth).  Meanwhile, I've been trying to help hubby get ready to go fishing as soon as the season opens.

Gorgeous day here.  Talked to Dh this morning.  They were going to try him on solid food and see how it goes.  If good, then he may be able to come home tomorrow.  Continued tests and they feel he had a flu blood that migrated into his gall bladder somehow and started his issues.....so not as dire as it seemed at first.  Hoping they will be able to nip all in the bud with the doubled bad of antibiotics that was dripping into his veins along with the water.

He also has G.E.R.D.  which didn't help too much, but  if he would have kept eating those hot peppers I love and have often....he would have been fine.  Never does what I tell him.  I buy hot peppers, hot veggies, whatever they have and usually eat at least a tbsp. per day if not more.  I can get a return curtain call if I eat and go to bed too soon, but otherwise......I pretty much have a cast iron stomach.

Had to work tonight, but it is such a great position that I never mind.

Guess rain is on for today.  Don't mind that so much as it will be only rain....no thunderstorms or major downpours.  Was looking like Dh might be able to get home, but now....not so promising.  His appetite took a hike, needed some oxygen last night, and is short winded today.

All of this se's of the gall bladder.  Maybe they will take it out, but that decision won't come for a while yet.  Nothing much happens over a holiday period unless something is truly 'threatening' so it looks like we are moving more into wait and see.

Hope you all will have a quiet Sunday.  Have some more work to do here, some things to gather up and then will head off to Marion.  I know Dh would like a little company.  Didn't go yesterday as I had to work last night and it would have had me coming and going and getting lost in the middle.

Ted Cruz and his lunatic lies are having a field day.  Idjuts will love his "speech" because they live and breath for anything that brings them attention and fires up the not quite bright.  It ends up not counting for much in the end and the first amendment will stay firmly in place.  Amazing that you can tell such a "bald" one.

    Morning Everyone!

Another lovely day here.  Warm and sunny with a nice breeze.  I love May ... best month of the year here.

Tim should be home in a couple of hours, so I need to head off to the store.  Walmart on a Sunday, holiday weekend, should be lots of fun.  I imagine he will want to bbq today or tomorrow.

I got a dictation file in last night, so think I will get that done before Tim gets home.

Jackie ... So very sorry that DH had a change in appetite.  It's a shame he has to stay in the hospital over the weekend.  I hope they are managing his pain.  Is it a long drive for you to get to the hospital?

Sunnyflowers ... You are totally getting ripped off for spring this year.  Can't believe how cold your temps are.

Gumby ... Wow .. your are really busy.  The contract work doesn't sound too bad. The gardening sounds like a lot more fun.  All the MT jobs I applied for are independent contractor positions.  It's hard to find an MT company that hires on an employee basis with benefits.  Guess I'll just wait until Tuesday and send out some follow-up notes.

Hope everyone is having a good day.

    hugs,

had a great time gardening this am - during the sunny spots, and didn't have to water anything I planted cuz then it poured!

Not doing much this year, sugar snaps, sun gold tomatoes ( getting HUGE & leggy on indoor south facing window sill ;-) and of course, sunflowers.  I also love nasturtiums, have lemon thyme, tarragon, and rosemary in pots, so can bring indoors for the winter= yummy!

Everyone shares their seedlings of dill, coriander, which I LOVE, guess it's an acquired taste, cuz they spread so.  I'm the source of chocolate mint, which I've allowed to completely take over one bed - makes the MOST yummy tea, or hot chocolate with cocoa..

Hope all in USA are flying the flag, giving thanks, and PRAYING for an end to all wars....

Hey, Sunny.  I grew chocolate mint and pineapple mint at my last house, and decided this time to put my mint in POTS!!  Growing orange mint and spearmint.  I love lemonade with mushed up orange mint leaves.  Bought some lavender this morning that I'll need to get in the ground today.  I've only planted a few tomato plants this year - I've got a big problem with ants, and don't yet know what I'm going to do about them.  I'll probably need to use some pesticide, but really hate to.  Do you have any suggestions??

I've an old crib that my dad made for my dolls when I was a child.  My mom did toll painting and she painted it and I used it for my babies when they were tiny - neither of my kids wanted it, so I've decided to make it into a planter and put it on our deck.  Hubby wants me to put herbs in it, so am planning on what will be the herbs for it.  I've already planted a bunch of herbs in the ground, but there are always more to grow, so I'm thinking of ones I use a lot, like tarragon, parsley, cilantro and the like for the deck, so I can just run out and snip some.  Also, I don't want things that get big and woody, like lavender or rosemary in it.

GG, for the ant problem - sprinkle cinnamon by the doors or in tucked away places where the ants would have to pass to get into your house. Another possibility is if you have a block or concrete foundation or other concrete touching your house get a big wide piece of chalk and draw an outline all the way around your house, either on the foundation or very near on any available concrete. They also say that borax works. I don't remember why the cinnamon works but the chalk and borax work because crossing those scratches their exoskeleton which would kill them so they avoid it.

Apparently ants hate the smell of cinnamon.  I use cinnamon sticks under my door sills to keep the ants outside.  But GG, if your problem is anthills in the garden, try sprinkling ground cinnamon all around the hill and see what happens.

GG -- If you like basil (I LOVE basil!) it should do well in your new crib/planter; also oregano and marjoram.

Gorgeous weekend here with lots of American visitors popping over!

Thanks - yes, the problem is ants in the garden.  I'll sprinkle cinnamon around and see what happens.  Also, yes, I love basil.  I planted some of it in the garden, but the ants have destroyed it.  I'll put it in the crib, once it's ready for garden use, thanks for the suggestion!!

I don't know if I said, or not - my memory sucks - but I've also planted a lot of succulents along the driveway in front.  The people we purchased the place from put in red rock - which I didn't want to remove, but am not particularly fond of, so I ripped the landscape cloth out from under the rock and planted lots of succulents.  The front of the house faces south, and the soil is pretty sandy there, so I'm hoping they'll be happy long term.  So far they seem to be enjoying themselves.  They've grown enough to notice since I planted them about a month ago.

Wish we had good weather - unfortunately, it's raining.  Nice for the plants - not so nice for those of us who like sunshine.  But I really cannot complain.  As a whole, this May was simply beautiful.  I'm hoping for the same June through September!!

Sitting here back from Marion --Dh was just ok.  They slightly over did the IV fluids and are now having to give Lasik.  Sigh !!!!  Guess I'll go back tomorrow.  They could easily be short-handed.  Don't think they will have a lot of Dr.'s around either.

It is wonderful here right now.  Windows open ( never did rain like they said ) and don't even need all the fans on.  This is really my kind of weather.

Well, need to get outside and get the dogs fed.

    Hi Everybody,

    Happy Memorial Day!

Tim was in the Army during the Viet Nam war years.  He was stationed in the Rifle Guard at Arlington Cemetery.  He did the 21-gun salute for all the soldiers that came back and were buried there.

Just mowed the upper field.  Looks nice .. just wish I had a weedwacker that I could manage.  Everything looks so much better when it's trimmed up.

Are you guys doing anything special today?  We're going to bbq a little later.  Love bbq'ed pork ribs!

Jackie ... I'm so sorry to hear they gave your DH too many fluids.  That happened to a friend of mine, and thank goodness her daughter who is an RN was with her.  They almost killed her, but her daughter caught the mistake on the IV in time to reverse it.  Very scary.  Makes you feel like you have to stand guard over your loved ones when they are in the hospital.  I hope he's feeling better today.

Suzie ... I have a bug man come out once a month and spray all around the house and basement.  When we first moved in here, there were wolf spiders in the house, so he had to spray indoors as well.  I haven't seen one in years ... knock on wood ... so no more spraying inside.

I hope you all get to hug a Vet today!

DH and I are pescatarians and won't be bbq'ing. Instead we're going to our favorite Chinese restaurant! Happy

Jackie, best wishes for your hubby! Sounds like he's been through a bit of an ordeal.

Bren glad your honey is coming home. It's tough when they're away too long (a little bit is not that bad though! )

Bren, That's a lot of ticks!  I've only had one...so far.  Our lawn mower is broken so our grass is getting tall.  If it doesn't get fixed soon, ticks will be a big problem.  We have no idea how long it will be before the local repair shop will have it back.

Perhaps we can build a bridge from the porch to the raised bed of the vegetable garden.  Winking

good morning all, hope everyone had as beautiful a weekend as we had here in maryland.  It was perfect temperature and humidity wise!  Attended a cook out at a friend's house on Sunday and took my 2 year old granddaughter to a carnival on Monday but otherwise rested up from the activities of my daughter's wedding last weekend and caught up with laundry and some household chores.  While I don't do yard work anymore, I did enjoy sitting outside watching my DH work!  Had a good ct scan last week, no progression, and chemo resumes this week.  Have a busy summer planned around my chemo treatments.  Enjoyed catching up with my reading here.  You gals do a great job of keeping me informed!!

    Morning All,

Going to stay busy with work today ... yay!  Supposed to warm up today, so a good day to stay inside and work.

Notself ... I hate those ticks.  I keep the grass really short, even down in the fields.  I think the damn things fall on me when I mow under and around the trees.  The path I walk the dogs on is almost overrun with baby oak trees about 6 ft tall.  The ticks leave awful big welts on my skin that don't go away for weeks.

Hope you get your mower fixed ASAP.  Our riding mower is barely hanging on.  It looks so silly without the hood on it ... I ran over something last year and it fell over and we couldn't get it back on.

Glenna ... I love that you are having so much fun right now.  Great news on the scan!!  Are you starting a new chemo or using the one that's kept you stable?

Congrats on being WELL, and enjoying yourself...hope chemotherapy is as gentle as possible for you when you resume.

Rain. Which is probably good, cuz all the farmers keep telling me NOT TO PLANT tomatoes until Official Memorial Day :)

Just back from Marion.  Nothing definite with Dh.  He is still wearing the heart monitor and they are still un-sure that it is REALLY the gall-bladder.  I hope they can get this pin-pointed.  I'm getting a bit on the weary side here and I'm sure he is.  Hopefully, soon.

Will rain here all week according to our reports.  Oh my.....not what I was hoping to hear.  May keep it cooler.  Temps have not been that bad but with rain comes humidity.

Getting ready to flop myself into my recliner.  My day started at 5:30 a.m. and its 9:15 p.m.  Got our work done here, went to Dr. B's for a few hours, then filled my gas tank and headed to Marion.  Then back home here to feed and water everyone again.  I need to un-wind.  See you in the morning.

Brenda, yes, same chemo.  It's carboplatin.  Tomorrow will be my 3rd round.  Not too bad except for the decadron high and being awake all night. I do get a lot done around though.  Usually get on the computer and try to teach myself something new on Photoshop.  Have to figure out how to take the port a pots out of some if the wedding photos!  LOL!

Jackie, can't believe they haven't determined the cause of your husband's problems.  Please remember to take care of YOU!!  Going back and forth and taking care of all the feeding and watering has got to be wearing you down.  Not to mention work.

We had a bad storm here tonight.  I imagine I'll have to supervise my DH picking up all the fallen twigs and branches from the trees!

    Good Morning Girlfriends,

It's already 80 degrees here.  Need to get busy and walk the dogs before it gets much hotter.  It's supposed to cool down a bit tomorrow and bring a big thunderstorm.  Maybe it's the same storm that's blowing through Illinois.

Still no word on the four jobs I applied for.  Guess I'll do some follow-up on that today.

Glenna .. I hope the carboplatin is kind to you while killing off those cancer cells.  A little decadron doesn't sound that bad ... especially when you get so much done!  The bad part would be not being able to sleep at night.

I just raked up a ton of little limbs and branches that had blown down.  I would like to be the supervisor and watch someone else do it!! Ha!  That won't  happen where I live.

Playing with the Photoshop sounds like a lot of fun.  Is it a software package?  The picture editing function on Microsoft just isn't that great.  I think my sis had that and she also got one of those little printers that prints out 5 x 7 pictures.  It was loads of fun to play with.

Jackie .. OMG .. you must be so tired.  I'm sorry to hear that the doctors haven't figured out what's happening with DH yet.  Is the hospital a long drive for you?  Hoping they get his pain resolved ASAP.

Sunnyflowers ... I'm not planting anything this year.  I thought I was doing good just to pull all the weeds in the hosta beds around my little gazebo.  Yesterday I pulled the weeds out that were growing between the pavers and swept it out.  It looks cute again ... just can't afford to fill the hanging baskets with flowers this year.  I might see about putting a couple of tomato plants along one side of it where I used to grow zinnias.

    hugs to everybody,

    Bren

Bren -- Get stuff done before it gets too hot!  We just had a few days of 80F weather (great for all our American visitors over your long weekend!) but a thunderstorm has cooled things off and now it's breezy and 70!  Lovely!

Last fall, we decided to cut down (to about 4 inches above ground) an out-of-control butterfly bush.  I kept looking for new growth this spring and, not finding any, I decided to try to dig it up.  Ugh!!!  Well, as I was doing so, I discovered a tiny wee sprig of GREEN leaf!  Hubby always says that when you want a plant to grow again, you threaten its life -- he's right!  So.......the bush, such as it is, stays there.....for now.

On a more unpleasant note -- have any of you read about Joe the Plumber?  He says to the families of those poor dead college students in California "Your dead children don't trump my 2nd Amendment rights".  Really.....this says all you need to know about teabaggers, doesn't it?
