Spring 2014 Rads

I started tamoxifen 2wks into rads. My MO wanted me to be able to know the difference between the SE's from the rads vs. the tamoxifen. My RO was fine with me taking it. She was only adamant about me not taking any extra A, C or E, outside of my regular food intake as well as any additional antioxidants like green tea and pomegranate juice.
I don't think that there is a right or wrong way, or any specific protocol regarding taking the tamoxifen while undergoing rads, each doctor is different. I've read on here and other forums that some people have started months after.

I m miserable today . Some area in nipple is lighter in color than usual. And very very red. Monday off will give me relief, but scared for next 8-9 treatments. Then is boost.
Also my pain shoots are more intense today.
I just want everything to get over once for all.
-
I lost my post. To make a long story short what helped me on my burns under my armpit and chest area is called viscopaste. I was suffering from the raw areas and the wound specialist put that gauze with cream all over the area where I was radiated. She said it had zinc on it. I will be seeing her tomorrow. She also gave me a vest that looks like net. Instead of using bandages I wear that. I'm so thankful she uses that viscopaste on me

Hi ladies...I will be starting rads in mid June ( I joined summer rads board)...my question is about being tired as a side effect...I know we are all different ...chemo left me exhausted for about 8 days after...2 days hardly got out of bed.
Rads make you tired I hear...is it as bad as chemo tired?? I just want to be able to do more this summer! I also thought to schedule it for late afternoons...so I can enjoy the days...any insight is appreciated! I meet with RO on Thursday...so ready to get this started to be done !!! Thanks! Rosie

Rosiesride
For me, I got more tired by Thursday/Friday each week then I was ok come Monday. It was not a feeling of I can barely get up - more of an exhausted feeling as our bodies work hard to try and heal.
Good luck to you this summer
-
Rosierise: for me I wasn't as tired as chemo but I did have my rest usually in the afternoon. I was also told to stay away from the sun, to cover the radiated area. For me it was after radiation that I got a sunburn feeling. It was painful. What helped me was a cream-like gauze called viscopaste
-
I finished my Rads last Tuesday and am seeing the MO tomorrow and my guess is he will be giving me the script for Arimidex.
-
Rosie, I didn't start getting tired from Rads until about week 4 of 5 (no boosts). I didn't have chemo, so can't compare it, but I do know that you were wise to do it late in the day. I did come home and snooze right afterwards once the tired feeling started. -
Won't start rads until August, but already thinking about what time of day would be best to schedule, etc. Is there anyone out there who had little to no SEs from the rads? Maybe didn't get real tiredness? Can't blame a girl for hoping:-)!
-
MoMMom- I can tell you when NOTto do rads---1pm. I am retired, so I was willing to let the working gals have first thing in morning/late in the day, but middle of the day is not optimal--- spent all morning not being able to commit to a project because I might not finnish, or I might get dirty, etc. and then I didn't want to commit to anything after 1pm because I didn't know how long doctor day might take, or if the rads would be on time or not. So, if you can get morning or late in the day----GRAB IT AND HOLD ON.I did not have to do CHEMO---I can't imagine RADs will be hard for you, but then we all are different. I wish I had known about the Tumeric/Curcumin study and taken that, and I wish my RO would have talked about letting me use cornstarch., but she did not want any powders. I am a fair redhead who sunburns easy and I am big busted. The crease area under my boob was my only issue until my last 3 treatments. I burned on a Friday and then M/T made for a sobering finale. Otherwise, I left every day with a warm boob and a red boob, but by a.m. it was fine. Just make sure your skin is dry especially under your bust line when you get your Rads, and use your crème religiously and generously.
Remember in Fried Green Tomatoes when Kathy Bates morphs into TOWANDA and knocks out the wall in the livingroom and rams her car into the girls car who stole her parking place---You are TOWANDA-Warrior Princess YOU GOT THIS!
-
Fight BC---what crème are you using? If you aren't doing a prescription crème, I think the Calendula or the Miaderm, is superior to Aquaphor. Cetaphil creme has the petrolatum base as Aquaphor, but it feels less greasy. I burned when I switched to the Aquaphor. Aloe is cooling and Hydrocortisone 1% crème will help with inflammation, but it is not a substitute for your moisturizer. I know how you feel, and I am praying for you to have relief in your body and complete healing. . I am not patient either, but you are now on the home stretch. That half-way mark was a real milestone. I didn't have any pain until I finished, but I have the shooting pains and also a heavy ache now. ( I was done Tues)
-
Redheaded1 - Thank you for your excellent advice!!! We are kindred spirits - that Kathy Bates line from Fried Green Tomatoes, "I'm older and I've got more insurance!" is one of my favorite lines EVER!! I say it all the time. Lol!
So far, I feel so very lucky that I've had minimal SEs on chemo, and I was hoping for the best with rads. I'm small breasted and some other kind soul here tells me that alone should make it easier for me. I go to the gym every morning, but I think I'll just get up extra early to get that out of the way and try for a time no later than 9:30 or 10. I can see where later in the day may have considerably more wait time. I will do research on the Tumeric/Curcumin study - never heard of it. Thanks again!
-
momto3boys - I overlooked your comment about AZ. I'm in the East Valley, too. My MO was at Banner Desert, and my RO is at Mercy Gilbert. Both within 20 minutes of my house, but MDA would have been even closer. We could do coffee one day - before treatment, so we were making sense!
-
Rosie, I went for evening rads, 5pm. And that worked perfectly for me.
I would go to work earlier than usual, and leave early in the evening to go to rads. Then come home, have dinner n take rest.
I was tired after my treatments, I had more pain, more fatigue in the evening after tx compared to morning. So I could work in the morning relatively in better shape.
I did not have chemo, but I was tired at week 2, and extremely tired at week 3. So much so that I am taking time off for next 3 weeks. I have two small kids and due to work n the tx, I had hard time taking care of kids. so doctor strongly suggested me to take time off if I could. And I did. My time off will start from tomorrow . He strongly suggested my to take afternoon naps so fluid in breast does not have to weigh your girls down.
Redheaded, I take turns using aloe, calendula n aquaphor.
I will see my RO tomorrow. Need to find out what he suggests.
I think taking rest is important part of radiation. You can't be always on the go like most mothers are. Body needs to recuperate. So PLEASe give your body chance to do so by taking rest, eating well n light exercise.
I m 50% done. 50% to go!
Much love,
FightBC.
-
redheaded, my RO suggested me to take more rest for couple of weeks after I m done. The pain that you are feeling, might be reason. Just make sure that you don't have temperature, and or chills which is sign of infection.
Take rest. I m glad that you are done. Skin must be slowly getting back to normal. Hope your pain goes away soon too!
-
Mommom, I have finished rads and did have fatigue. I think those of us that have had chemo first are more tired going into rads and feel the fatigue more. I found that it helped a lot to lie down for about and hour or so after rads. I didn't always sleep, but it helped to build a little extra rest into the day. Being small breasted seems to help a lot in terms of skin issues. I am also small breasted and hardly had any issues....just one little spot at my collarbone. My guess is that you will do very well.
-
I just had my last rad. YAY!!!!!!! The only issue is the skin under my breast and armpit. I feel it pulling...ouch! My RO said that she doesn't think that the skin will break but just in case, switch to the aquaphor and slather it on heavy.
Regarding tiredness......yes and yes! A wave of exhaustion hits me at about 1:30 every day. I hit the couch and crash. Lucky for me I am on LTD so I don't have to worry about work. I don't sleep at night either do to the flashes. As soon as I can, I will start taking vitamin e. I heard it helps. I'm hoping it provides me with some relief. I'm so glad to be done with treatment. Next up hysto/ooph and then exchange. I see the light.....I see the light!!!!
Good luck to you all who are continuing rads.
-
Yay Lonnie!!! Congratulations on finishing rads!!!
-
congrats Connie for finishing rads
-
Lonnie - soo happy you are done! I have to admit, selfishly it makes me happy when I hear any of you say you are finished, as it reminds me that I'll be saying those words one day, too. Do you have hormone therapy ahead, or are you done with treatment, period? Take care of that skin, and I hope it holds out for you!
-
Congrats for being done!! I am counting down to my last chemo...6 days!! woohoo...Monday june 2 will be my last! Thanks for the info. on time of day...I think I will see if I can get later in the day...
IF he starts me around June 23rd...I will go to July 31...I plan on going back to teaching which for us in NC, workdays start around the 18th of August...wonder how fatigue is 3 weeks out of rads??...I am already planning for my kindergarten kids to "wheel" me in a wheelie chair to lunch!! My hallway is the furthest away from the lunchroom! LOL! HOPEFULLY, I will have my strength in the legs back by then!!
I am a planner, being a teacher, but man oh man am I tired of planning my life around treatments and side effects!! Like all of us...so READY to get back to LIFE!!! Peace and healing! Rosie
-
Hi Rosie
I haven't had any fatigue with rads, almost done. Chemo was bad, I got anemic too. Days I couldn't move.
-
Three more rads & I am done! Actually I look OVER DONE!!!!
Burn is peeling & changing, darkening under arm.
Today's pic of my side chest in all her bright red glory"
-
Yay Lonnie
Congrats on finishing! I finish tomorrow! I am so excited. The next couple of months are still full with Dr appts, etc, but they are just check ups. I will continue to get a herceptin infusion once evet 3 weekd till Oct, but that's an inconvenience at best - no se to worry about.
Vintage girl- ouch! Hope it heals quickly.
Anne

vintage
ouch, ouch and ouch!!!!! Hang in there.
-
My God VintageGirl, hang in there....... Sending healing vibes on your way!
-
OUCH Vintage!
Count it all joy, yes, have 2 1/2 weeks left. 3 more full and 2 weeks of boosts. Right now my appointments are at 10:40am. We must live near each other.
I've been MIA, like a few others as I get closer to the finish line (I had 7 weeks total) towards the end of the week I'm wiped out. Getting more red and more sore. I am one of the bolus girls everyday and just now 4 1/2 weeks in I'm getting red and feeling tight and a little pain. The bolus will be on during the 10 boosts and that scares me as that is the area that is getting painful. I see RO for my weekly check after rads today.
I still have some time, but I have to say I didn't do anything until needed and for the most part I think that served me well. I went 4 weeks with really no issues. First Aloe was used and last week I was given Aquaphor.
I just received my appointment for Tamoxifen, I finish Rads June 12th and see the oncologist June 17th.
Congrats to all those who have finished! -
Vintage - your pic looks just like my right side. It hurts - mostly just under my arm and at my sternum. Finished rads 5 days ago and the pain is diminishing but it's still very red. Looking forward to healing. Hope you heal quickly.
-
vintage/ maryfox: You poor things! I hope your skin starts healing soon!
Anneb: Tomorrow is my last one too.
I will post a pic as well.
All: How soon after RT are you starting with Tamoxifen / HT?
-
So very happy to report that I had my last rads today. Yippy!
Aside from redness, itchiness and some minor twinges now and then it wasn't too bad for me. Redness and tightness is better since boosts. When it keeps me up at night I've taken some motrin and it helps a bit. Hope you all heal as quickly.
