Nausea after radiation treatment?

Hello,

Does anyone experience nausea after radiation treatment?  My my mom started her radiation treatments last week and she feels a little nauseous about 30 mins after for a little while and then it goes away after a few hours.  Just wondering if anyone else is having the same reaction.

Thanks

Muffins, I had nausea when I had radiation. The doc kept insisting it wasn't from the rads but my esophagus and stomach were very close to the field. Ever hear of scatter, guys? A lot of other women on the rads thread I was on had it, too, and also had their docs denying that it was from the rads. One woman's doc did acknowledge that it happens, and he estimated less than 1%.

I think part of a rad onc's training includes repeating the mantra , "It's not from the rads. It's not from the rads."

Best of luck to your mother on her treatments.

    Leah

    Hi Leah,

Thanks for responding.  She didn't get nauseous on the weekend because no rads on those days.  But as soon as Monday came around she Felt it again so she figured it had to be that.  She feels mostly sleepy.

    Thanks

I never had any nausea with any of my TXs (chemo and rads.)  I was 'religious' about taking all my anti-nausea meds while on neoadjuvant DD A/C but about 1/2 way through 12 weekly adjuvant Taxol, I quit taking them with no issues at all.  While apparently there has been no thorough research (according to my Dr) on it, there seems to often be a relationship between how Morning Sickness treated you and nausea with chemo.  That would appear to be true, in my case at least.  I had absolutely no Morning Sickness with either Son and no nausea with chemo.

With your Mom's nausea and rads, a couple of possibilities come to my 'poor feeble mind' - never seen any documentation on either but sort of possibly makes a bit of sense to me.  One is that laying flat on her back on a hard 'board' for the time period with no movement at all might be allowing for some reflux (I thinks that's the right word - stomach acid getting out of the stomach area) and it starts a bit of irritation that she feels after being back up and away from the stressful place.  My other thought goes along with the stress of doing rads also but only is related the stress she feels going to the appts, having the TX and then when it's over for the day, she's dressed again and out of there for the day, it is her body's way of relieving/getting rid of the stress it's been under.  Don't know if either 'idea' has any value at all or makes any sense to anyone else.  If either make any sense, it couldn't hurt to talk to Dr, his/her RN/PA/NP about it and if approved an antacid before might help but only if Dr approves.  You said that on the weekend, she had no problems with nausea so no radiation, no laying still on a flat 'board' and no stress by going/doing the TXs.  Just thoughts.

    We are each so unique!
