I'm in Canada, so for the most part, I'm totally unaware of how the US system works, other than what I hear on the news or what I read on bc discussion boards. First, I don't know how you guys do it....I get stressed out trying to pick a cell phone plan. Second, after reading this article, I can say without doubt, the system is seriously f'd up. Im quite surprised that US doctors aren't revolting. If I were an oncologist, for example, and found out some paper-pusher was making more money, there is no way I could keep quiet about it. Hell of a disturbing article, but very eye-opening.

The biggest earners are the pharma guys. Former Novartis chief Vasella bagged close to $20 million a year. Wish he had found a cure for that money.

Thank you cp4, the numbers are ridiculous for administrative costs. The executives in this country have created a delusion that they have significant affect on the bottom line. We are being driven into the ground by this ideology.

What I find so terrible about this situation is reading about EXTREME "bonuses" for CEO healthcare positions, while some promising researchers need to beg for funding.  How many nurses are working on short staffed floors or doing double-shifts?  When the cut-backs go round it is usually the nursing staff that is cut.

LOL - I was treated at one of the Barnabas Healthcare sites in 2006!

Heidihill, I remember reading about him when he was stepping down. In case anybody doesn't know, he was offered something like $70 million dollars upon his exit. I believe public outrage led to that amount being reduced. Pharma companies are truly scum. Imagine how much research could have been done with the $70+ million that Novartis had laying around to pay off their former CEO.

That was hush money, btw. So he didn't share "secrets" with other pharma companies.
