Spring 2014 Rads

ouch, Vintage Gal! I'm set to start rads this coming Tuesday. I'm eager to get it going but still haven't fully recovered my energy from chemo and now I have a cold. It may be a long time before I feel normal, huh?
-
Greetings ladies,
I've been MIA, my middle one has been very sick with the flu (yes, real flu) and was in the hospital for 4 days. I didn't miss rads though as I didn't want them tacked on at the end, so that was my daily outing. Saw the RO today, everything looks fine, but I have 2 area's that are very dry and he isn't being optimistic about me not getting red and yuck????? Perhaps because it is for 7 weeks? Seems to think I'm going to have some real issues during boosts as I have a bolus there. I have 4 weeks left.
Will catch up on everyone's progress, but I missed being able to post to this board and say hi to everyone. Happy Healing Weekend! -
Hi Ladies,
Finished rads on Wednesday! So glad to have it out of the way. I am healing very well. Never had the real bad reactions that some of you are experiencing. Some mild itching, red bumps, sensitivity and pain, but I am healing well and the only red area now is the boost area. The rest is tan. I never had fatigue. I will meet with my MO soon to start HT.
Have a wonderful week-end!
-
Checking in, only 3 more rads for me! Just started getting red on my foob and under my arm on the side. Hope that this is as bad as it gets!
Vintage that looks like it hurts, are you using any creams or aloe? I hope it heals soon.
I finish rads next Wednesday, any ideas of what I can get the techs?
-
Gramof2boys - we will finish at the same time! My underarm is dark (not red or pink) and I have a tiny fold area when I hold my arms above my head that the tech said will get red.
-
Gram. Yes I posted a couple times about my allergic reaction to Eucerin and Aquphor they both have a petroleum product as main ingredient and I had a reaction. By rad # 10 it was so bad and I told RO I was switching to 100% aloe only. Much better!
-
AKJ so far I have no fatigue from rads though the nurse and RO keep asking and telling me to expect it. I said NOPE! I do not plan anymore fatigue! LOL I started rads one month post BMX and two month post chemo. Started back at the gym just before rads and sure hope I don't lose any stamina or strength I have gained. Good luck!
-
Redheaded. I was told I was cancer free by my MO in March after path reports of BMX. I was told the chemo did what it was suppose to do. I started rads one month after bmx, two months post chemo. Guess it depends in what order you had chemo surgery rads. ?
-
Vintagegirl-- Yes, it sorta looks like that but I have a large oval patch of bumps midline. I have a perfect straight line from mid breast to the the underarm, like a sunburn line from wearing a tube top----I mean straight as a pencil line. It still feels hot this a.m., which has never happened. I slept till 8:30, which also never happens. I put on the Aquaphor and while it feels very moisturizing within a short period, it burns and itches. I think it is in response to my rubbing my skin.Has anyone else been told by their RO towards the end that the crème they are using may have stopped being effective and they should switch out?
If so, did you see improved results/
-
Hey, how many of us are done next week?Me, Inks, Gramto2boys,, who else, I can't keep scrolling w.o losing my list.....
FIGHTBC- how was the rest of your week? Been thinking about you and hoping your fatigue is improving. They determined a big chunk of mine was my thyroid level but they can't get it fixed until maybe June-takes that long for body to correct to the meds adjustment.
-
Hi Gramof2boys
I have been thinking of what to get the techs also- I finish a week from this Wed. I've seen a lot of people mention baking cookies, but it don't bake, so that isn't going to work. So I am going to get them a fruit bouquet. It's where they cut up fresh fruit and make them look like flowers. It's different, pretty and healthy. I think the name of the company is Edible Treats or something and I believe it is nationwide. Just a thought...
-
Anneb---those are wonderful---almost too pretty to eat--and healthy too.
-
HI ladies! How is everyone doing? Hope that you are all enjoying not having to go to rads today! I am 1 1/2 weeks out and wow, am I peeling! I was being a baby the other day and whined to my friend that all I want is to be able to wear a bra again! I am also tired of raiding my son and hubby's closets for big t shirts, mine are all more form fitting.
I am feeling a bit "off" -- more "bad" news from my Lyme dr that my white blood cell count has dropped very low again so I am off my I abx for a while. I know that my body is just desperately trying to get its equilibrium back. But I have never been a patient person, so why the heck start now???
Anne- I bet since the techs proab get lots of cookies, a fruit bouquet would be a very appreciated change of pace, esp since we are entering bathing suit season.
Red that amazed me too- how perfectly *straight* the red lines were. Crazy, right?
Hugs to all of you!
-
I'm done Thirsday Redhead need to keep putting luberderim lotion and saline water for soothing. I put soak saline water with gauze for 15 minutes on the affected area then I smear with luberderim for 15 minutes, that seem to help
-
hugs fakery wings, that's what happen to me during taxotere chemo. My white blood cells were very low but it went back to normal. Lots of prayers going your way
-
Redheaded Yeah, I thought I wasn't gonna make it through either, but I did it. You will be fine, hang in. Finish what you started. Mine only got bad really under fold still kinda raw and peeling a little. No pain tho, the rest of the breast has almost faded to a tannish pink color. I wish all of it would peel because it would look better, more even toned. Still tired today had a bad headache all day. YOU got this!! -
Redheaded1
you may be having a reaction to the petroleum product in the aquaphor like i did.The 100% aloe is so much better for me. At least we have the weekend for a break!
-
Vintage girl---I was suspicious of the Aquaphor, so I went to Walmart, and bough Cetaphil, which also has the petrolatum, but other stuff. Put in on and was itching and burning withn 10 minutes. I actually feel best right after the bath with nothing on my skin, but I know that's not acceptable with my RO. So, I just put my x-clair back on. I also have Calendula, which is almost gone, if she insists that I not use the X-clair. I am going to have to call them Mon and see if she will take a look before I get cooked any more. I am even red outside my boundaries on my side....This is the longest I have stayed red..... gonna take a benderyl tablet at bedtime. I know she said she didn't want to interrupt my treatment, but that was when she was concerned with the underneath boob stuff---its still weeping, too. I think there is a relationship between the Aquaphor usage and when I burned the worse. I had used it over the weekend when I had no Friday treatment, and burned that Monday. Went back to X-clair, saw her Wed, she wanted the Aquaphor, used it Wed night and Thursday and then burned like hell on Friday. -
Hi everyone
I went to a health food store and got aloe gel, but wasn't sure if it was the "right" one so I took it with me to rads. The tech took it to the Dr to check, and she said it is fine, but not to use it till I finish treatment. I am flying home to Ft Laud a few hours after I finish treatments, and won't need it there- I have a huge aloe plant in my backyard! I am using Radia-gel only - don't know if it is helping at all. I've been using it since day one, so I have no idea what I would be like without it. I am very red and it is starting to hurt, but I only have 2 full tx's and 5 boosts left.

Hi Ladies –
So sorry to read that so many of you are struggling with sore, blistering skin. The following is gonna sound like an infomercial but that reflects how I feel about this product I just started using.
Wow – that’s all I can say about the Lindi skincooler roll
that I pulled out the last week of rads when the redness from the boosts got really
challening. My skin had done remarkably well thru the first five and half weeks
but the final week – with boosts around the nipple – pushed it over the edge.
Red, raw, painful – much like the photos that some of you poor, unfortunate
sisters have experienced.Early on, I bought the Lindi skincooler roll off the
interent – it’s expensive but I figured I better have it on hand for the moment
I needed it. Then, I forgot about it since my skin did well with just bethmethasone
cream that the RO prescribed and the fragrance-free aloe. By the middle of this
past week, those products were not cutting it and I tried a square of the Lindi
roll. It’s like a MIRACLE. Totally cooled the area and gave me protection
between my nipple and my bra or my tee-shirt – no rubbing – total comfort. Like
a new layer of skin.Even better, I put the roll in a plastic bag in the refrigerator
so next day’s square (yes, one square lasted from dinner one day to my next
morning’s shower) was so nice & cool. Can’t say enough about the relief
this product – which is for radiation cancer treatment – provided.Con: light green discoloration (due to the aloe & green
tea with which the rubbery sheet is infused) to the inside of my bra that
appears largely to have come out in the wash. Because of this, I went back to wearing
the Fruit of the Loom sportbras I used after the lumpectomy. The ones I plan to
banish to the garbage heap when this journey moves on!Other con: Expense. Still, I’d get the roll and not the
single reusable sheet. I can see myself using up the whole roll this coming
week.Good luck to you all – just wanted to share this feedback –
your comments that I have read over the past two months have been immeasurably helpful to me.Lizzie

Redheaded1 , flagirl,
Today I feel that I am getting my energy back, littlebit. But yesterday and Friday, I experienced fatigue as never before.
Looks like this is going to be pattern ahead.
I have question, Do you feel same fatigue during boost also? Or do you start getting your energy back during week of boost?
I am going to have 30 total treatments, Out of which last 5 will be boost.
LindyWindzy, thanks for information. Feels like my nipple might need cool roll coming weeks.
-
Hello everyone,
For those of you finishing this week, YEA!
Lidzywidzy, thank you for the infomercial :-) I haven't heard of that product and I'm going to check it out. I also like to have things on hand just in case. I'm two weeks in and aside from some itching early on that I think was overuse of aloe no SE yet. I'm using calendula now.
faerywings, good to hear from you and sorry about the WBC. Patience is hard.
Best to all this week!
-
Hi all---might be a bit better today, I slept till 9:oo a.m. I am just amazed at some of the things your RO's are letting you try----- I got all my papers from my Doctor out and re-read all of it and it says nothing hot (heating pad, hot water bottle) and nothing cold---(ice bag, etc), no tanning beds, no heat lamps, no sun bathing. or sun exposure to the treatment area. I gave the Cetaphil crème another try, it didn't burn quite as much . I am still really red under arm under boob and where my breast incision is. There is a patch on my middle chest that when I shrug my arms inwards, feels like it will crack---but to touch it or look at it, it doesn't look tight or real bad.
Fight BC- my nurse says that the fatigue diminishes a couple of weeks after treatment stops----. She told me Friday to take it easy over the weekend-- My nipple felt really sore during weeks 3-4 and then now, its not so tender. I am not doing boosts.
Anneb take care---be sure to tell them about the pain. I am not sure the Rad Techs would mention anything or not to the doctor. I am going to have hard time getting two back to back after the Friday and weekend experience. I would welcome a two day break in between Monday and Tues.......
-
hey, ladies!! just had to check in and say i am back from a wonderful vacation! swam in pool & the ocean without a problem - actually think the stretching & arm movement did me a lot of good - wish i had a pool & some warm weather to keep it up!! Also allowed myself to get a little sun - kept lathered up- wore a hat for the most part & a tee to keep my chest covered. But. all in all, it was a wonderful 10 days of NOT feeling like a breast cancer patient!
tho i did often wonder, as i looked around, who else might be one? 1 out of every 8...we should have like a secret wink or hand sign
i know i didn't have as many problems as some - just wanted to let people know that it IS possible
it will be OK ! hang in there!
-
ps: don't tell my Onc! lol
-
I finished my rads May 1st. Had 28 treatments to lymph nodes and breast, no boosts. Two weeks later all redness and discomfort are gone, the breast just looks tanned. So ladies hang in there, there is light at the end of the tunnel!
-
I use miaderm. I just recently developed a burn on my collar bone that's it. No rash, no blistering. Other than that, I have no SE's. This is my last week....woot woot. Friday can't come soon enough.
-
4 days post final rads and no more redness, except for boost area. The rest is light tan. A few bumps, I am guessing bc I haven't been good about keeping my chest area covered...:(.
Hang in there ladies!
-
keeping the faith, muska, not buying it- Thanks for the encouragement! I really am in awe of you ladies when I see all you are conquering. Not buying it -you said something I can relate to when you said you looked around and you wondered who else might be going through the same thing. We never know what others are going through. A few years ago after the birth of my youngest, who is three, I went into heart failure. I remember being out and about trying to grocery shop-regular things with a newborn and adjusting to medications that at times really dropped my blood pressure. I literally had to ask a stranger to stay in the rest room one time in the grocery store when I had her in the stroller. I felt like I was going to faint and I thought damn it I am not going to faint AND wet myself in this store. Moral of the story-a year later I was able to come off meds and my preop echocardiogram was my first normal one but during the time I was having major heart troubles I looked like just another 40 year old mom. (aka Tired!) Sometimes what another person is going through isn't obvious so let's hope these times make us softer and even more kind to others.
Have done fairly well but last week has been a challenge so Redheaded1- I can relate. Extremely red/purple and sore-especially site where lymph nodes removed and nipple. I think we all just react differently-my sister who also had radiation is horrified when I send her pictures of skin-she didn't have any trouble. RO nurse practitioner says I look great for how far in. Doesn't feel that way but 6 more boosts left done-thought was next Monday but forgot holiday so week Tuesday. Tech said I can double celebrate Memorial Day- I quickly added it may not be the only double that Monday! Happy to be closing in on end and coming off working all weekends!!! Have decided 3 12hr shifts on nights just too much last few weeks so taking day of FMLA each week to get done. Good luck to all that are healing and those still dealing with treatment this week!
-
Havetolaugh - hang in there - after what you have been thru you can handle this. Thx for your words reminding us all to be gracious - a good mantra, for sure.
