I went to the doctor yesterday to get my genetic test results and thank God I do not have the mutation. My DCIS is a 6 cm "strand". I have large breast so the doctor wants to only do a lumpectomy with radiation. Despite my many arguments that I give him that a mastectomy would be better. I am only 36 and after reading LOTS this last month I think my chances of getting another primary are pretty high. I was approved for Medicaid but it's my understanding they may not pay since the doctor thinks the lumpectomy is best in addition to the two breast being very different after one mastectomy. That brings me to my other worry, with a lumpectomy I will have a nice scar on the top of my left breast being 36 that does make me uncomfortable too. Please will someone chime in and help me. My mind is all over the place!

    caring4animals,

Usually it is up to the patient to decide if she wants a lumpectomy or mastectomy.  The doctor can give you the benefits and drawback of both.   I only had small dcis (3 mm) and had the option (went to 2nd BS for another opinion...both said it was my choice).   Go to another surgeon to get another opinion.    Also, if you do decide to have a lumpectomy you may want to discuss partial reconstruction to make the 2 sides even.

    Good luck.
