Is testing really necessary?

Options

I was diagnosed with bc in feb of 2011.(second time around)  My oncologist wanted me to do chemo but after searching on the computer I found out about a test called the oncotype test.  I asked to have one done.  It came back as one (1) which means I did not need chemo!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was put on Arimidex.  My last bone scan shows loss of bone which the Dr is now recommending something to help the bones.  Don't know if I want to take anything.  The new drug he tells me is Prolia. Anyone know anything about it.?

But my main question is that now my oncologist wants me to have a bone scan... I don't have any symptoms so I am wondering why he wants to do it.  Any thoughts

Thanks

Nan

I think he may want to check and see if there is a recurrence...it would not be good if he didn't.   I would get the test done right away so you don't have to think about it.  Re: Prolia, i think that Lago is on it--she has had some bone loss and she really researches everything.  good luck!  I'm sure everything is ok.  keep us posted.

My first thought is, call doctor and ask.  I mean we are good guessers around here, but it could be anything from the doc just wanting an update from the last scan to fleecing you for another diagnostic test.  If you really want to know the reasoning behind it, most sensible to make the phone call.

I agree with elimar. Ask your doc why he thinks testing is needed. You mentioned that you had a bone scan, which led to detection of some bone loss. Are you saying your onc wants you to do another bone scan? As far as Prolia goes, many of us have been on bone strengthening drugs. I had Aredia and finished up after 16 treatments spread over two years. It was very easy for me most of the time.

I have been on Prolia for two years. No side effects and it has had a very beneficial effect for me. I was osteopenic, but stable, prior to breast cancer but had bone loss from chemo and hormonal therapy. Prolia has brought my density back to a normal level. If you type Prolia into the search function you will pull up some threads discussing it. Are your docs wanting bone scans or dexa scans? The bone scan would be looking for mets and the dexa would be measuring density.
