Liver spread.

Hi everyone, I'll jump straight to it, mum got results from CT scan yesterday and it's now also in her liver (already in bones and lungs) she's on 24 he oxygen already and has gone up eight dress sizes since this time last year 😕 and can no longer walk unaided.

They've taken her off of Arimidex (too weak for chemo) and put her on Tamoxifen to see if it helps with the liver.

What should I expect? Her health is poor anyway due to this damn illness. I have no idea what part if the liver or any other details but believe knowledge is power, my parents don't actually want to know anything so they don't ask just listen 😔 so I would be most grateful if someone could share some information.

Many thanks in advance

Hi Mumoffour, I'm so sorry you and your Mom are going through this.  If she's too weak to have chemo and the anti-hormonals aren't working it's going to be difficult.

Faslodex might be a possibility (a second line anti-hormonal)? Or one of the clinical trials or non-chemo drugs.

Have you been to the doctor with your mum?  Any chance you could ask the doctor some questions?  He or she should be willing to explain what is going on (with your parents' permission, of course).  It's very common for patients not to want to know.  Your mum isn't out of the ordinary.

Another option would be to read through the liver mets thread in the Stage IV forum.  They will describe what treatments they are having.

hi Pajim, thank you, I'll have a look at the stage iv forum.

A couple of times I've called my mums local GP not the actual oncologist and both times my mum has been so cross (you wouldn't think I was in my 40's!) as she doesn't want me "interfering", not meant in a nasty way but because they don't really want to know they don't want anyone else to know either, if that makes sense, I would love to be in on a meeting with her oncologist but I know that will never happen!

I'm an only child which makes it a bit more difficult. Her health is so bad now due the cancer that's already there, last May her Macmillan nurse told me although she couldn't give a definite time frame she would be surprised if mum was still  here at the end of June (last year) and here we are in May and she's still here.

It's just not knowing what to expect OR what to say.

Thank you again for replying and I'll check the other forum out.

My mother is going through the exact same thing. It is so scary not knowing what will come next. I do know that some patients would rather not know their diagnosis or progression, yet as her child you should have some right to know. I would definitely consider asking the doctor. There are definite patient/ doctor confidentiality laws but the doctor may be able to give you some info so you are not as scared and confused.

Don't be afraid to seek help. You are not alone in this.

Thanks Megan, I called her dr yesterday who knew nothing as the hospital (a week later) haven't forwarded the paperwork yet. He was most apologetic and will call as soon as he knows what's going on.

Meanwhile mum is suffering with terrible sweats at the moment horrendous fatigue
